Volume 3 Chapter 42 Still A Lot To Do
Luke asked Cain to build a toilet, and the next day, Cain started working. Since he had already built toilets for the mansion, he had a clear plan, so he finished quickly. When he looked at the backyard, the toilets Cain made were lined up.
"Hey, Barvish? Do we really need this many toilets?"
Cain asked while pointing at the 120 toilets neatly lined up.
"Yes, Sir Randolph's order is for 120, no mistake."
Barvish answered while looking at his homemade memo paper.
"But no matter how you look at it, it's too many, and if we leave them here, they'll just be in the way, right?"
"It's fine. This afternoon, people from the merchant guild who want to buy them will come to pick them up."
"Well, if that's the case, it's fine, I guess."
(I don't know how much we can sell them for, but I can think of it as pocket money before going to Margrave Shield's territory.)
Cain decided to put aside the complicated matters.
* * *
As reported by Barvish, in the afternoon, dozens of men began carrying the toilets lined up in the mansion's backyard. Even if they dropped a few, they wouldn't break, but since they looked white and fragile, it was rather strange to watch the muscular men carefully carrying them.
"Ha, I need to start thinking about a souvenir for Grandpa... What would be a good gift?"
The sewer construction is expected to finish next week, so the departure to Margrave Shield's territory will be in 10 days.
Originally, Lydia was supposed to go together, but since the construction of the new town is progressing faster than expected, Luke's workload increased. He complained that if Lydia wasn't there, he wouldn't be able to finish even if he stayed up all night every day.
"Looking at Father Luke's condition yesterday, he looks like he might die from overwork. Mother Lydia should stay behind, right?"
Cain muttered to himself alone in his room, remembering Luke's appearance from yesterday.
"This time's travel is probably by carriage, and since it's probably a freight wagon, we can carry somewhat larger items, right? But, since there are travel days, we can't really think of perishable foods, can we?"
Cain wandered around the room, thinking of a good souvenir. However, he couldn't think of anything at all.
"I'm kinda hungry. Let's go get some food."
He left the room, passed through the dining hall, and headed to the kitchen. Since dinner preparations had already begun, the cooks were working busily. A rich, good smell of tomatoes floated in the kitchen.
"Young Master Cain. What's the matter? Do you need something?"
The head chef approached with a smiling face.
"Ah, head chef. I was thinking while I was spacing out, and now I'm hungry, so even before dinner, can I have some food?"
Cain asked as politely and as smiling as possible.
"Hmm, very well. Please sit there and wait for a moment."
The head chef pointed to a table in the corner of the dining hall. This table was usually used by cooks for eating, but Cain and others often used it outside of meal times.
After giving a few instructions to the other cooks, the head chef picked up a knife himself and started cutting something. Cain eagerly waited to see what would come out. After a while, the head chef returned with thick gloves on, holding a soup pot.
"Sorry to keep you waiting. Since it's before dinner, I made soup. It's onion sautéed and cooked in consomme. It will warm you up, please enjoy."
The head chef served the soup in front of Cain.
"Oh! It looks delicious!"
The appearance was just like the onion soup he had eaten several times in Japan. Cain scooped the soup with a spoon, cooled it slightly, then brought it to his mouth.
"Delicious! The sweetness of the onions is really good! Head chef, thank you."
Cain enjoyed the soup to his heart's content.
"Ah, that's right. I will give that as a souvenir for my grandpa."
