Volume 3 Chapter 45 Improvement Of The Campsite

Cain had just finished making a bath and was preparing dinner soup on the stove in the living room when he heard rain hitting the roof of the clay house. He looked up at the sky through the window and saw dark rain clouds spreading across the darkening sky. It seemed the rain would last a while longer.

As the rain grew stronger, Cain worried about the merchants outside. If the rain continued all night, they'd have to spend the cold night in their tents without a fire. Though he believed they were prepared for the cold, he couldn't shake his concern.

"Hey, Barvish? Mind if I go outside to check on things?"

Cain hesitated, asking Barvish, who was inspecting equipment in the living room.

"What are you planning to do? It's getting dark outside, and the danger is increasing."

 Barvish softly declined.

"Hmm, I'm a little worried about the merchants outside. If it starts raining now, they might not have had dinner yet."

"Yes, but such things aren't unusual, so they're likely taking precautions."

"But still, I'm worried because it's cold..." Cain continued, thinking for a moment before deciding.

"I'm thinking of building a roof over the campsite. Would that be okay? It's just for one night..."

"Has the decision already been made? If it's not a mistake, I, as the attendant, cannot stop you."

With a big sigh, as if this was the hundredth time today, Barvish gave permission.

"Thank you, always thank you. Well then, shall we go?"

Cain and the others put on their rain gear and went outside. Cain briefly thought, "It would be convenient to have an umbrella."

Cain made a hole in part of the wall and went outside. It was quite dark, and the rain had grown stronger. In the campground, besides the first two groups, about four more groups of merchants and adventurers had gathered. Everyone was setting up tents or tarps to shield from the rain.

Seeing Cain and his group emerge from the wall, the adventurers took a defensive stance. Barvish loudly explained that they were Knight Cain's party and were just checking on the campsite. The adventurers slowly lowered their guard but didn't completely relax.

"Ha, that was surprising. Well, it can't be helped since a hole suddenly opened in the wall and someone came out."

"Sir Cain, how do you plan to make the roof from here?"

Gardy asked, looking toward the adventurers.

"I plan to make a wall surrounding the camp, except for the road along the town, then add a roof. I'm concerned about the strength with just the walls, so I'll also put up pillars in the middle where there are no people."

 Cain explained his plan.

"You're going to surround the campsite? In that case, it might be better to explain to each representative here first."

Cain agreed with Gardy's suggestion, called Barvish, and asked him to convey the plan and summon the representatives. Barvish raised his hands, approached the adventurers, and explained that Cain would use magic.

Among the merchants, voices like "Oh, it's Sir Cobblestone" arose, but the adventurers, from the Shield Borderland, didn't know Cain, saying things like "That's impossible."

As the explanation dragged on and the rain grew harder, merchants who knew Cain started criticizing the adventurers for not believing Barvish. After more back-and-forth, the adventurers finally relented.

"Thank you for waiting, Sir Cain. Sorry for the delay."

Barvish returned, splashing through the muddy ground.

"Thank you, Barvish. Let's finish this quickly before we catch a cold!"

Cain blew on his hands to warm them, then began Mana Circulation. He used the [Spatial Grasp] skill and imagined the roof he would create.

"Alright, here we go... [Create Clay]"

Cain chanted loudly enough for the adventurers to hear. As he finished, walls rose around the campsite, and two pillars extended from the center.

When the walls and pillars reached about 5 meters, they stopped, and a roof began to spread out. The walls were made in a lattice pattern with 20 cm gaps, allowing anyone hiding behind them to be easily found. Despite the gaps, they prevented the wind from coming through.

The roof was made into a slightly sloped triangular shape. Once completed, it became dark, so Cain lit several [lights] in various places, including the four corners, to brighten the area. With the walls and roof finished, the rain no longer came in, so they took off their rain hats.

Feeling proud after being thanked by the merchants and adventurers, Cain dried the muddy ground with [Earth magic] and built two stoves by the wall. When Cain, having finished all his creations, looked toward Barvish and the others with a smug face, they were, as usual, holding their heads in their hands.

Leaving the people present, who seemed to have something to say, Cain and Lala quickly returned to the clay house, leaving the explanations to Barvish and Gardy. After finishing the explanations and coming back, they closed the hole in the wall, made hot water for the bath with [daily magic], and warmed their cold bodies.

The next morning, after finishing preparations for departure, Cain erased the clay house and walls with [Delete] and tried to restore the roof made the night before. However, the merchants who had stayed there earnestly begged him to leave it as it was, so he did.

Barvish felt down, thinking he needed to report to the lords. "Sorry, Barvish," Cain apologized in his heart as he saw him.
