Volume 3 Chapter 50 Let's Go Out To The Town
Since the meeting from tomorrow ended earlier than expected, Cain decided to go out to town for a short while under the guise of a preliminary survey for the next day. He asked Doughton if there were any recommended places, and since he offered to guide him, he accepted.
"Sir Cain, we've been looking forward to your return. The town is amazingly lively, just as you transformed it into Cobblestone. There are more stalls, and the trash on the streets has decreased."
Doughton enthusiastically talked about the effects of Cain's Cobblestone transformation.
"That's good. In the Sanroze territory, the residents' awareness of hygiene has improved, and the streets are cleaner. Let's aim to have the Margrave Shield territory Cobblestone-transformed as soon as possible and be pleased."
Cain, feeling a little happy, let a slip of his tongue.
"Sir Cain," Barvish and Gardy immediately jumped in. Cain could only reply, "I'll refrain myself."
"Well then, Sir Cain, what kind of places would you like to visit?"
Doughton checked with Cain.
"Hmm... I want to go to the first street that was Cobblestone-transformed and the magic tool shop."
Cain thought for a moment and shared his wish.
"After all, it's been some time since the Cobblestone transformation, so I want to check if anything has broken or collapsed. I also want to visit the magic tool shop because I have something I'd like to make and want to reference."
Doughton replied, "Understood. I'll guide you in order," and began leading the way, saying, "This way."
As expected, the Margrave Shield territory was more crowded and lively than the Sanroze territory. Cain, feeling excited, carefully proceeded while paying attention to his surroundings. First, based on Cain's wish to inspect the entire main road, they slowly walked along it from end to end.
There were no missing cobblestones or loose stones. However, Cain noticed that some stones were of different colors and asked Doughton about it.
"Doughton, I see spots where stones of different colors are set in. Did you or the others repair those?"
Cain pointed to a spot with a differently colored stone ahead and asked.
"Yes, as you can imagine. Thanks to the Cobblestone work, ruts and such couldn't form, but in areas like storefronts where carts frequently stop, there were occasional depressions or shifts. I apologize, but we carried out repairs."
Doughton answered, slightly shrinking himself.
"Don't be so modest. No matter how sturdy something is made, it will eventually break. And I'm impressed that the repair procedures are well in place. I'd like to do the same in the Sanroze territory, so could you tell me later how often repairs are needed?"
Cain hurriedly followed up, and Doughton, with a relieved expression, readily agreed.
They slowly moved along the main road, exchanging opinions and observing until the end. Occasionally, they found one or two repair spots, but with no large depressions or broken parts, Cain let out a relieved sigh. Considering that about three times as many people live in this town compared to the Sanroze territory, Cain judged that issues like quick deterioration would not occur easily.
"Mr. Doughton, but with the current state, if we Cobblestone-transform all the streets, it might require quite a bit of manpower for repairs, right?"
"Yes, as you can imagine. Currently, the Maintenance Bureau is planning to create a joint repair department with the Mason Guild. They plan to transfer underutilized [Earth magic] users to the new department to keep them active."
Doughton explained happily, somehow pleased.
"Wow, isn't that great? It's good that employment for [Earth magic] users is increasing. I wonder if it can be done in the Sanroze territory."
"Yes, that's right. Cutting stones of the same size is quite difficult, but [Earth magic] can be easily created as long as you have Mana and train sufficiently. [Earth magic] users really admire Sir Cain for that."
Doughton said something a bit strange, but since he was pleased, Cain let it go without comment.
