Volume 4 Chapter 25 Let's Build A Bridge V
After the meeting about the bridge was finished, Cain began building the wall near Bridge Village.
"The captain said the wall should be about 180 centimeters tall, right?"
Cain asked.
"Yes, Sir Cain," Barvish replied while checking his notes. "The highest part should be 180 centimeters, and the small wall in front should be about 150."
Cain looked at the slope nearby.
"Do you think it should follow the slope, or should we build it like stairs?"
Gardy shook her head while looking at the slope.
"If it follows the slope, it might be hard for the soldiers to stand steady and shoot arrows. It could be dangerous."
"Hmm... Barvish, can you call the captain again? I want to be sure. I want to finish this today."
"Yes, Sir Cain!"
Barvish said quickly and ran to the guard post.
A few minutes later, he returned with the captain. The captain looked like he was in his 30s, with a short beard.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Sir Cain," the captain said politely. "Barvish told me the plan. If possible, can we make the front wall like steps instead of a slope?"
He explained that he wanted enough space for three soldiers to shoot arrows side by side.
Cain nodded.
"I'm glad we asked. If we make it like stairs, we'll need to change the slope a bit. What do you think, Barvish?"
Barvish thought for a moment.
"If we build on the slope, the road for wagons will become narrow. I think we should build a new platform next to the slope and make the wall there."
"Yes, that sounds better. We'll use your idea," Cain said. "Captain, do you have any other requests?"
The captain looked thoughtful.
"If possible, please make the ground less slippery."
"Understood," Cain said. He walked closer to the slope, checking the space.
"The space is okay. But the ground is uneven. I should make it flat first. Let's make the platform 3 meters wide. The wall should be about 50 centimeters thick."
Cain started to focus. He used Mana Circulation while planning in his mind.
"First, I need to level the ground. Earth Dig. Then Earth Press. That should make the height even. Okay, let's begin..."
He placed his hand on the ground.
"Follow my will, and take form before me. Create Clay."
He cast the spells one by one. After Earth Dig, the ground in front of the slope began to shake and dig itself up. With Earth Press, the ground flattened, like something heavy pressed it down. When he cast Create Clay, the ground lit up again, and a stair-shaped wall slowly appeared from the earth.
The whole thing took only one minute.
If someone was watching from far away, it would have looked like the wall just popped up out of nowhere.
"What do you think, Captain?"
Cain asked, turning around. The captain was frozen, his mouth wide open. He couldn't even speak.
Cain glanced over to Barvish and Gardy. Both of them had serious faces and were pressing their fingers to their foreheads like they had a headache.
After about thirty seconds, the captain finally said in a shaky voice,
"No problem at all... Thank you."
"Good job, Sir Cain," Barvish said with a sigh. "Now... let's go meet Sir Will and hear him shout at us."
Gardy and Barvish grabbed Cain's arms and dragged him toward the tent, like they were arresting him for being too good at magic.

• Barvish - A slave dwarf with a muscular, compact physique, intended as Cain's retainer/bodyguard, brought via magical contract.
