Volume 4 Chapter 3 Teleportation
The next day, the weather was clear. There seemed to be no problems with today's travel. Cain and the others ate soup and bread for breakfast at the inn, packed a light lunch, and left.
Today, Ms. Merida, Cain, and Lala rode horses. The other men walked behind. It took a bit longer than the day before, but they reached the bridge without any trouble.
People were already lined up to cross from the morning. They gave their horses to the soldiers at the checkpoint, crossed the bridge in a group of six, and followed the river upstream.
After about an hour of walking from the bridge, they stopped and checked the area.
"Barvish, do you see any people or monsters nearby?"
"...It's safe. There's nothing."
"Then, Mr. Zain, shall we use the magic tool here?"
Zain nodded. He touched the bracelet with a blue gem on his wrist. A moment later, a teleportation tool appeared in his hand. He said, "Sir Cain, please," and handed it over.
The teleportation tool looked like a staff. It was about 160 centimeters long, made of mithril silver, and had a large, clear blue stone at the tip—about the size of a grown-up's fist.
Cain held the staff with both hands. As he activated it, a voice echoed in his mind.
(Set the user.)
(User? I see... This tool lets you choose who can use it. I'll pick Mr. Zain, since he knows where we're going, and also myself.)
(Do you want to set Zain as the user? Yes / No)
(Alright, yes. What's next?)
(Think of the destination.)
The staff gave its next instruction.
(It's not moving yet. Should I try it? Where would be good...? Maybe the gate of Sanroze town? I heard you can only teleport outdoors. I'll try thinking of the new gate.)
Cain imagined the newly built gate of Sanroze. The scene came clearly into his mind. He saw several carriages passing through it.
(Oh, I can see the place! This helps avoid the usual teleporting mistakes.)
(Do you want to move here? Yes / No)
(No, not this time.)
Cain chose "No" and opened his eyes.
"Mr. Zain, I set you as the user. Just think of the place and teleport."
He handed the staff to Zain.
"Thank you. Now I can finally take Merida back to her hometown. But Sir Cain, you shouldn't trust people so easily. What if I took the staff and ran the moment you gave it to me?"
"Oh, it's okay. I know you won't do that. I trust you."
"Sigh... When you say it with such shining eyes... Please be more careful next time. Alright, I'll use it now."
Zain held the teleportation staff and shut his eyes. After nodding a few times, a ring of light formed at everyone's feet.
"Don't worry. Just stand still."
He opened his eyes and spoke to the nervous group.
"Then, let's go. Teleportation."
As he said the word, Cain's vision shook. He felt dizzy and crouched down. When the light ring faded, his head cleared. He stood up—and everything around them had changed.
"Oh," said Barvish and Gardy at the same time.
They had all arrived in a clearing, surrounded by forest.
"It worked, Sir Cain. Thank you."
Zain stepped toward Cain.
But then—an arrow flew past and stabbed into the ground at Cain's feet.
"...Huh?"
