Volume 1 Chapter 23 Well, The Activities For The Home Economics Club Have Started

Volume 1 Chapter 23 Well, The Activities For The Home Economics Club Have Started

Now that I've almost decided on a part-time job at the patisserie, all I have left to do is fill out the paperwork and get permission.

I think while looking at my schedule planner.

Next week, the club activities for the home economics club will start, so things are going to get busy.

The club activities for the home economics club are after school on Mondays and Wednesdays.

I've scheduled video shooting with Nakagaito for after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I plan to work part-time on Fridays after school and Saturdays... I've made quite a tight schedule.

But since I have the chance to redo my high school life, I think it'll be more fun to pack it with things I want to do instead of just lazing around.

By the way, I wonder what we'll be doing tomorrow in the home economics club?

I decided to ask Osaragi-san through social media.

[What will we be doing for tomorrow's club activities?]

 I quickly received a reply from Osaragi-san.

[For a while, we'll be focusing on cooking. Do you have anything you want to make?]

 [How about omelets?]

[If it's omelets, it's cost-effective and sounds good. Can you get eggs ready?]

[Understood. I'll also contact Saikachi-san about it.]

 [Great!]

With that, I send a message to Saikachi-san.

However, even though it's a business-related communication, sending messages to a girl in such a matter-of-fact way feels a bit lonely.

Well, at cosplay brothels, I used to send messages or use social media to confirm attendance before a girl's shift. If there was no reply, I would call directly. It might be a bit late to think about that now.

[Good evening, Saikachi-san. Tomorrow's home economics club activity is going to involve making omelets.]

[Omelets, huh? I've never made them before. Can I do it?]

[No worries, everyone starts somewhere, and surprisingly, it's easy. So, each of us needs to buy two eggs.]

[Got it. Thanks for letting me know.]

[Oh no, it's not necessary. Also, it's still cold at night, so make sure you don't catch a cold. Alright, good night and sweet dreams.]

[Um, it's still a bit early for bed. Shall we continue talking?]

[Oh, yeah, I'm fine with that.]

 [Alright then...]

Saikachi-san's message is generally affirmative, with occasional nods and occasional topics brought up by me.

For women, phone calls, emails, and social media are not just communication tools, but also important means of connection. They read the atmosphere, convey emotions, and utilize these tools to connect with others.

For men, they primarily use these communication tools as a means to convey necessary information and confirmations.

To begin with, men often struggle with communication.

This is because men have a harder time understanding emotions through facial expressions, gestures, etc., and they are not as empathetic as women.

It becomes even more challenging to guess someone's emotions through text alone.

That's why casual conversations have meaning in their "lack of substance."

Chatting is just a pointless, refined, and pointless conversation.

If you can only talk about substantial things, you can have conversations in presentations, discussions, and such. But because you can only talk about necessary matters, it becomes difficult to make friends.

Of course, if you keep going on and on with meaningless talk, it does get boring.

[Oh, it's already this late. Well, see you tomorrow.]

I felt relieved by Saikachi-san's message.

 [See you tomorrow.]

Yeah, exchanging messages surprisingly takes up a lot of time.

I should seriously go to bed soon.

 ...

 ...

Then, the next morning, I took a shower as usual, tidied up, had breakfast, and went to school.

And while chatting with Hirose-kun and Gouriki-kun in the classroom, I heard Saikachi-san's greeting voice coming from the entrance.

 "Good morning, everyone."

Then, as usual, she headed towards her seat next to mine, but wait... is there something different about the atmosphere again?

And with a cheerful and expectant atmosphere, Saikachi-san greeted me.

 "Hata-kun, good morning."

I wonder if she changed her hairstyle back because there was some change in her mind.

"Good morning, Saikachi-san, you changed your hairstyle..."

Huh? Are you a little disappointed?

Looking closely at her hairstyle, it seems like she curled the ends a bit.

"Oh, did you curl the ends a little? It's really cute."

Saikachi-san's expression brightened up in an instant.

 I'm glad it worked out.

 "Hehe, you think so?"

 "Yeah, you look more refreshed."

 "I'm happy to hear that."

Well, I managed to clear the "Did you notice I changed my hairstyle?" part.

"I brought some eggs for today's club activities, but is it okay if I don't put them in the refrigerator?"

"Yeah, at this temperature, it should be fine. If you cook the eggs properly before eating, they should be okay even if they're stored at room temperature for about two weeks. At the supermarket, they sell eggs without refrigeration, right?"

"Yeah, now that you mention it, that's true."

"Moreover, if you keep putting it in and out of the fridge too often, it gets all fogged up and apparently goes bad quicker."

 "Oh, really?"

Well, while we were talking about that, Shinonome-san got all interested.

"Eri-chin and Hata-pippi, gonna make omelets for the club? Sounds cool!"

"Sounds cool, huh? How about you, Shinonome-san, wanna give it a shot?"

"All I want to do is eat."

"Well, you know... even if it's just 'ghost members,' having more club folks around might make things more fun. Wanna join in?"

"Sure, let's do it! And there's dessert after, right?"

"Whoa, dessert too? Alright, how about some cream puffs? They're easy to make and won't take much time, extra treat?"

 "Yay!"

So, after school, we headed to the home economics practice room.

And there, Osaragi-san and Utashiro-san were already there.

 "Hey, Osaragi-san, Utashiro-san, hi!"

When I said that, Osaragi-san looked at Shinonome-san and tilted her head.

"Hello, huh? Hata-kun and Saikachi-san aside, who's the other girl?"

"She's a prospective member, for now. But it seems like her specialty is eating. This is Shinonome-san."

When I said that, Shinonome-san energetically raised her hand and greeted them.

"I'm Shinonome Sayuri. Nice to meet you!"

 Utashiro-san chuckled and said,

"Well, she might be better than a real ghost club member."

And Osaragi-san also chuckled and said,

"Yeah, that might be true. Well then, Shinonome-san, please take care of us. I'm Osaragi Megumi."

"I'm Utashiro Kanae. Nice to meet you!"

 "Yes, nice to meet you!"

Shinonome-san is always unshakable in situations like this.

"Now, let's make plain omelettes today. The ingredients are simple: 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon of milk, and a pinch of salt."

When Osaragi-san said that, she smiled mischievously.

"So, the important things are the heat and speed. Let's get started."

"Oh, I received a request from Shinonome-san to make cream puffs, so I'll make those instead."

When I said that, Osaragi-san's eyes widened.

 "Oh, really? That's fine then."

 "I apologize for the change."

The ingredients for cream puffs are not that different from omelettes.

You just need eggs, butter, salt, granulated sugar, and either bread flour or cake flour, as well as whipped cream to put inside.

In a pot, bring milk, butter, salt, and granulated sugar to a boil. Turn off the heat and add the sifted flour all at once. Mix with a rubber spatula, then turn on the heat again and cook over medium-high heat until a thin film forms at the bottom of the pot.

After that, leave it warm and put it in a piping bag. Pipe it onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake.

Let's make an omelette while we wait for the dough to cool and bake, which takes about 45 minutes.

In the meantime, Osaragi-san, as a role model, puts eggs, milk, and salt into a bowl and mixes them well. Then, she pours salad oil into a frying pan and heat it over medium heat.

Once it's heated enough, she pours the beaten eggs into the pan and stir them in a circular motion with chopsticks. She cooks it over low heat until it's partially cooked, then fold one-third of the omelette towards the center using a spatula and fold the other side over, enveloping it.

Then, holding a plate with one hand, she flips the frying pan over and place the omelette on the plate.

 "It looks great and delicious!"

"It's not that difficult, let's give it a try!"

I nod in agreement with those words.

 "Let's take it easy, right?"

"Yeah, even if you fail, the omelette might just turn out a little firm."

As Osaragi-san says that, Shinonome-san responds nonchalantly.

"Um, I don't really want to eat a burnt omelette, you know."

 I say to Shinonome-san.

"If you have complaints, just make it yourself."

 "But that's a hassle, geez."

Oh well, she is so demanding.

Anyway, I follow a similar procedure to Osaragi-san, starting with only milk and not mixing in salt.

If you mix in salt first, the coagulation temperature of the eggs decreases, making it easy to burn.

Now, heat the frying pan well, melt salted butter, pour in the egg mixture all at once, stir with chopsticks, and when it starts to solidify to a half-cooked state, take it off the heat.

After that, fold the eggs towards the back of the pan, wrap the sides with a spatula, flip decisively, turn it over, let it cook a little with the seam side down.

Then, gently place the omelette on a plate, make a cut on the surface with a knife, open it left and right, and there you have it, a gooey half-cooked egg emerges.

"Wow, it's like a restaurant omelette."

"Since there's only salt in the butter, it might be good to generously put ketchup on it."

"Itadakimasu. Mmm, it's so fluffy and gooey, it's the best!"

 "Hmm, that's good."

 Utashiro-san nodded in agreement.

"You're quite good at this. I guess not using salt makes it easier to make it semi-soft."

 "Yes, I suppose so."

"Alright then, I'll give it a try too."

Saikachi-san also attempted to make an omelet.

"The heat shouldn't be too strong or too weak, but it's okay to make it a little stronger."

 "Oh, alright."

Saikachi-san seemed like she was making an omelet for the first time, and her movements were a bit awkward.

"Oh no, it got a little burnt."

"Maybe the heat was too strong or you didn't lower the heat in time?

But I actually prefer it like this, so can I still eat it?"

"Oh, you're willing to eat it?"

 "Yeah."

"Oh, well then, please go ahead and eat it."

 "Thank you."

The inside of the omelet may not be as fluffy as expected, but I actually don't like it when the inside is semi-soft.

"Mmm, this omelet is delicious. I think it's easier to eat when it's this hard."

I see that Saikachi-san's expression brightened up.

 "Well, that's good to hear."

Although it looks better that way, I'm not really a fan of runny yolks in half-cooked fried eggs. I prefer hard-boiled eggs.

"Well then, I'll take care of adjusting the heat next time."

I said that, and Saikachi-san nodded happily.

 "Oh, sure. Please do."

This time, we were able to make fluffy omelets without burning them.

 "Well then, let's dig in."

"Oh, it's about time the cream puffs are done, too."

I whip the cream with a hand mixer, then put the cream inside the baked cream puffs using a piping bag with the smallest tip. And it's done.

"The cream puffs are ready too."

As I said that, Shinonome-san was the first to reach out.

"Yay! Well then, let's taste it... Mmm, delicious! It tastes like Beard Papa's cream puffs."

"Um, making cream puffs at home is a bit tricky, unlike the ones you find at convenience stores or supermarkets, you know, the usual soft ones."

 "No, no, this is amazing!"

Saikachi-san is eating the cream puff and getting all happy.

"The choux pastry is fluffy and it really tastes delicious."

"Yeah, when piping the dough, make sure to do it while it's warm, and don't open the oven until the crust gets a nice brown color. If you stick to that, you won't fail."

 "Oh, I see."

If you try making cream puffs, surprisingly, it's quite easy, and it doesn't take that much time.
