Volume 2 Chapter 58 Today's Study Session Is About Social Studies

Volume 2 Chapter 58 Today's Study Session Is About Social Studies

Now that Hirose-kun's birthday party is over, and it's the exam period, we have a study session after school today.

I asked the members who gathered as usual after school.

"I'm thinking of studying seriously from today, but what subject do you think we should study today?"

Shinonome-san was the first to answer.

"Well, I think social studies would be good today!"

"Ah, social studies. It's a bit tricky because it's neither humanities nor science, and the content of the textbook is varied, so there are few practice books available. Moreover, it's divided into six fields: geography, world history, Japanese history, ethics, politics and economics, and modern society, and the classes progress parallel to each other."

When I said that, Shinonome-san looked puzzled and said,

"Yeah, that's true. There's a lot to memorize, so I can't keep up at all..."

Shinonome-san threw her body forward and flopped onto the desk.

Looking at the hand that was thrown towards me, I asked Shinonome-san,

"Hmm? Shinonome-san, did you change your nail polish again?"

In response to my question, Shinonome-san sat up abruptly and had a radiant expression on her face as she happily said,

"Oh, you noticed, as expected of you, Hata Pippi. Nail polish, you know, even if it doesn't have the same coverage as a hairstyle, you can tell it's not overpowering, so you can always admire it and it boosts your mood."

Shinonome-san suddenly smiled, but well, I understand what she means.

"I see, it's not just for someone else, but also for your own sense of style. Nail polish, huh."

"Well, I do care about how others perceive it, but it's also great to boost your own mood when you look at it."

"Um, so, the stuff used in nail polish, the acetate esters, they're like, in vinegar, right? The oldest records say they were first made in Babylon, but do you know where Babylon is?"

"Huh, I dunno, where is it?"

"Babylon was part of the Mesopotamian civilization, and today it's around Iraq. So, do you know where Iraq is?"

When I asked, Shinonome-san frowned and said,

 "Um, I... I don't know."

"Iraq is located between Syria and Iran, around the area between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Well, if you link world history and geography like this and remember things that interest you, studying becomes more enjoyable, I think. If you're aiming for a national university, generally, for humanities, you need to study two subjects, and for science, you need to study one subject in social studies."

Especially for humanities students who need to study two subjects, there's a lot to remember, and it's tough.

"By the way, if Shinonome-san were to take the national exam in the future, would it be in the humanities or the sciences?"

When I asked that, Shinonome-san proudly replied,

"Do I look like someone who would take the sciences?"

"Well, I guess not. In that case, you would need two subjects in the social sciences."

"I see, that's how it is."

"That's right. The social sciences are often associated with a high proportion of memorization, but if you associate various things and remember them, like the names of countries and where they are located, or which countries are nearby, then it will be useful for either subject. I think it's also helpful when deciding which subjects to choose for university entrance exams."

 "I see, that makes sense."

"If there's a lot to remember, it's important to try to minimize it as much as possible. Well, in the end, it's mostly a subject that requires memorization, so you have to diligently remember. That's why it's important to read aloud like in Japanese language class. I also think it's good to check the news and remember the names of countries that appear there, so you can keep up with current events."

I say that and Saikachi-san smiles wryly and says,

"Social studies is really tough, even if you just remember the material for the regular tests."

"Yeah, that's true. So in the end, I think it's best to study subjects that you like or are interested in. Shibata-san, you're pretty into history, like Japanese history, right?"

I say that and Shibata-san laughs awkwardly and says,

 "Yeah, that's true."

"When you think about it, it's also good to learn while enjoying games, manga, anime, or novels, but not everyone likes those things. But well, it can be fun to learn about people and events from the Three Kingdoms or the Sengoku period because of those things. And if you watch manga or anime set during the French Revolution and get interested, you can also learn about that."

"In that case, if there are any recommended manga or something, I'd like you to tell me."

"Then, if you have any specific preferences or requests regarding the type of manga or the region you want to read about, I can try to find it for you."

"In that case, I would like to read manga related to ancient Egypt."

"I see, Egypt has strong connections with Europe and Mesopotamia, so it might be a good way to learn about ancient times."

 "Yes, please. Thank you."

"Well, if you want to memorize historical events according to the timeline, using mnemonic devices can be helpful. For example, instead of simply memorizing 'In 1582, Oda Nobunaga committed suicide due to Akechi Mitsuhide's rebellion at Honnoji Temple,' it might be easier to remember 'Ichigo Pants (1582) - Nobunaga's suicide.' High school girls are good at using mnemonic devices with numbers, I think."

When I said that, Shinonome-san laughed out loud and said,

"Ichigo Pants (1582) - Nobunaga's suicide." It's so catchy, I can't help but remember it."

"Well, these kinds of mnemonics often become unusable when textbooks change. In the past, it seems people remembered '1192 (good country) Let's create the Kamakura shogunate,' but now '1185 (good box) Let's create the Kamakura shogunate' is the standard mnemonic."

 "Is that so?"

I nodded and replied as Shinonome-san asked me.

"In 1192, Minamoto no Yoritomo became the shogun, and in the past, this was considered the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate. However, in 1185, the Taira clan was defeated in battles at Yashima and Dan-no-ura, leading to the downfall of the Taira clan. Minamoto no Yoshitsune was appointed without permission by Emperor Go-Shirakawa, and although Tosa-bo Masashige attacked Yoshitsune as ordered by Yoritomo, he failed. However, Yoritomo gained substantial control by receiving an imperial decree from Emperor Go-Shirakawa to pursue Yoshitsune and by establishing guardians and local leaders, leading to the belief that the Kamakura shogunate was established in 1185."

"Hata Pippi, you remember such things well, huh?"

"Well, this is something you have to remember if you're studying Japanese history. It's the moment when power shifted from the imperial court to the samurai."

"I see, it's kind of like I understand, but at the same time, I don't..."

"Well, it's definitely more interesting to study with curiosity rather than just memorizing without understanding the meaning. Just like how we connected various things starting from the topic of nail polish earlier. It's also interesting to research the materials used in different regions for dyeing clothes."

 "Yeah, that does sound interesting."

Well, that's how today's study session went, kind of progressing and kind of not.

The content we filmed was quite messy, but for some reason, it seems to have a good reputation.
