Volume 1 Chapter 79 Arrival In Metis Town

Volume 1 Chapter 79 Arrival In Metis Town

 "Finally! Look, it's Metis."

Edward said in a tired tone, and the three of us leaned out of the carriage. In front of the road, there was an old stone gate and a long wall.

It had been exactly eight days since we left Trasverum when our carriage finally arrived at our destination, Metis town.

It has been three days since we repelled the mysterious and unidentified monster, and it only attacked us that one time.

We kept watch every day, but strangely, nothing else happened.

In the end, many questions remained unanswered.

For example, why did only those monsters seem to communicate with each other?

And most importantly, why didn't the 'Soul Retrieval' ability of the 'Instant Death Magic' activate?

Fatina defeated the Griffin, but can we say the enormous pitch-black wolf didn't die?

Back then, I activated (Ruin) and thrust my Mithril Longsword into its neck. It fell off the cliff just like that. I only saw it up until that point, and I didn't confirm if it was completely dead.

And the fact that my stats wasn't updated could be proof that it's still alive.

Of course, it's possible that it didn't work because of some restriction that I don't know about, but there are so many things I don't understand.

 "Is this... Metis?"

Upon hearing Mel's mutter, I suddenly regained my senses.

When I looked at the entrance of the town, I saw two men standing in front of an arched stone gate. Both of them were wearing Cretia soldier armor. It seems that they are soldiers stationed in Metis.

As the three of us observed the situation, the soldiers blocked the path when we approached a certain distance. The carriage slowly came to a stop.

"Travelers? What business do you have in Metis?"

"We just brought some adventurers who want to work here. We are not carrying any goods or planning to do any business."

 Edward replied curtly.

The soldiers came around to the back of the carriage and stared at us.

"Adventurers, huh... If it's just for some simple tasks, it's fine. But I don't recommend going to Metis Dungeon. The Adventurer's Guild is a little further down the main street on the left."

 "Thank you for the advice."

Once the soldiers left the carriage, Edward started the carriage again.

"What do the soldier mean by what they just said?"

"Now... they said they don't recommend going to the Metis dungeon."

 "I'm not sure."

It seems like it's okay to accept requests, but it's better not to go to dungeons. This is just a prediction, but it may be because they saw us and decided that we didn't seem to be very strong.

But the story won't progress unless we go to the Inferno Pathway.

The carriage passed through the gate and entered Metis.

As we walk along the main street, we admire the buildings of the town. Of course, each town has its own characteristics, but Metis has many old houses. To be honest, it's not very pretty.

In contrast to Trasverum, which was white and gorgeous, it is a cluttered mess of large and small houses built of dark stone.

The main street we're walking through isn't very wide and feels cramped. There are also a lot of people passing by, so it gets a little crowded.

 "It's so hot, isn't it..."

Fatina wiped the sweat off her forehead and fanned her face with both hands.

As I got closer to Metis, I could also feel the increasing heat. Unlike Voltana, this region had a higher temperature and didn't seem like a very comfortable environment.

"Fatina-san, are you okay? If you'd like, I can use magic to cool you down."

"Yes... If I really can't stand it anymore, please do."

"Okay. Don't hesitate to let me know."

Continuing to send wind with her hand, Fatina responded timidly to Mel.

Fatina, being a member of the Werewolf Tribe, had a different body structure from us. Maybe she's not good with heat due to her species. It might be because she has furry ears and a tail.

Additionally, she wore armor, although not heavy. Unlike me and Mel, her outfit probably didn't allow much airflow.

First of all, what is the difference between beastmen and humans?

My village only has humans, and I don't know much about them since we haven't had any interaction before.

As I was thinking about such things, the carriage stopped.

"Well, we've arrived in front of the Adventurers' Guild. Are you going to come in and show your face?"

Edward turned towards us and said.

In his left hand, there was a noticeably larger building. It was a two-story building made of stacked gray stones. As can be seen from the sign protruding onto the road, this seemed to be Metis' Adventurers' Guild.

"Yeah, if we're going to explore Metis' dungeon from here, we need information first."

"That would be a good idea. No matter how strong you guys are, things are different here."

"What are you going to do, Edward?"

"I'm going to rest here for a while. Resting is more important than finding an inn."

Edward lay down on the coachman's seat. Maybe he had finally reached his limit of exhaustion from the journey so far.

"After you finish our business at the guild, wake me up. By the way, let's treat ourselves to some tasty liquor later, on your tab."

"I don't mind, but if we're going to rest anyway, wouldn't it be better to do it inside the guild?"

"I don't want to go to the guild where adventurers gather, especially when it's already so hot and stuffy."

"Got it. Then let's go just the three of us."

 "Yes, let's."

Together with Mel and Fatina, I got off the carriage.

The place hadn't been well maintained for a long time, with broken and missing cobblestones here and there. We opened the wooden door, carefully avoiding those areas.

Suddenly, a cool breeze swept through my body.

"Huh? What's this? Even though we're inside a building, it feels cool and refreshing."

"You're right. What could it be..."

As Mel and Fatina said, the inside of the guild was strangely colder compared to the outside, and we didn't feel any heat at all. It was comfortable.

Looking around, I saw other adventurer parties also enjoying the coolness.

They glanced at us when we entered but quickly lost interest and resumed their conversations.

All the adventurers were wearing well-maintained equipment that was noticeably better than Voltana's. The difference was clear.

It seemed like high-ranking adventurers were gathering in Metis.

"How's this? Do you like the effects of this Treasure Orb?"

The man standing behind the counter turned towards us and started talking.

He must be a receptionist at the guild. With his narrow eyes and neatly styled short blonde hair, he had a kind smile on his face. He seemed to be around the same age as Chester. Rolling up the sleeves of his white shirt to his elbows, he had a professional look.

 "A Treasure Orb, you say?"

When Fatina asked, the male staff member pointed towards a pedestal behind the counter and said, "That's right."

On top of the pedestal was a blue orb about the size of a fist. Inside the sphere, white and light blue lights swirled around like a vortex.

"This is one of the items discovered in the Metis Dungeon. It has the power to lower the surrounding temperature. That's why we can stay comfortable in the guild even in this hot land. It's a small token of gratitude to the adventurers who work hard to complete requests."

Fatina was curious and stared at the blue ball while listening to the staff's explanation.

"Wow, this is amazing! I wonder if I can buy it somewhere?"

"Unfortunately, we only have one of these. If an adventurer finds it, the guild would like to buy it from you."

 "I-I see. That's right..."

Fatina seemed disappointed. Maybe she wanted this ball. Or maybe she doesn't like the heat.

"I'm Dill. I'm the receptionist at the Metis Adventurer's Guild. Nice to meet you."

"I'm Ark, an adventurer from C-Rank. These are my party members Fatina and Mel. Sorry to start off, but I'd like information on the Metis dungeon."

Dill said, "Hmmm," and nodded, smiling again.

"By the way, Ark-san, have you ever heard that Metis dungeons are different from others?"

"No, I don't have that information yet. If possible, I would like to know more details."

"Then let me tell you. The Metis dungeon is now the territory of the fire-breathing drakes. So it's going to be difficult to break in safely."

There's a type of monster called a Drake, which is like a sub-species of a dragon. They're smaller in size compared to dragons, but they look pretty much the same. In the rankings set by the guild, dragons are ranked as S, while Drakes are ranked as A.

It seems like because of that, high-ranked adventurers were gathering in Metis.
