Chapter 2 Quite A Commotion
As the girl opened her eyes, she saw an unfamiliar ceiling... No, wait, it was a familiar one, she thought. To put it simply, she woke up on her own bed.
"Milady Sara, are you feeling better?"
The one peeking in with a worried expression was Maria, her exclusive maid. Despite her cute and youthful appearance, which made her look younger than her age, she was actually 13 years old, 5 years older than the girl. She was excellent at her job, and the senior maids held her in high esteem.
"Good morning, Maria."
As she tried to slowly sit up, a strange sensation ran through her entire body. It felt really heavy.
That's when she remembered being pushed into the pond.
"You mustn't overexert yourself. You've been running a fever for 3 days and were bedridden. The guards found you collapsed near the pond and rushed you back to your room. You had a very high fever and didn't wake up. What exactly happened?"
It seemed like those bullies were pretending not to know anything.
"I was reading a book near the pond, and then Adam and the others came and took it away. When I tried to get it back, they pushed me, and I ended up falling. It seems like the merchant's daughter reading a book didn't sit well with them."
Sara, who had decided to hide the fact that she had awakened to her magic ability and regained her past life's memories, gave a vague explanation that wasn't a lie. Those bullies wouldn't tell the truth either, so the chances of being found out were low.
"How cruel! We must report this to Master!"
"It's no use. I don't have any evidence, and if we accuse them, it'll only lead to me getting scolded by Uncle and Auntie instead."
"But, milady..."
Sara smiled sweetly at Maria, who looked disappointed.
"But, thanks to that, something good happened too."
"What good thing happened?"
"I'll tell you later, Maria."
"Oh, I'm so curious! What could it be?"
Maria, who tilted her small head to the side, looked adorable like a doll.
"Hmm... I've thought of a way to get back at those bullies. But I'm not sure if I can do it yet, so I'll think about it some more."
"I see. So that's how it is. I understand. Those unruly kids need a good scolding, don't they?"
Maria, surprisingly intense, smiled sweetly.
"Right?"
"Yes, milady. First, please take your medicine. According to Doctor Marc Baron, you need to rest for a few more days. You'll need your strength for the scolding too."
Maria brought over the medicine, placed it on the bedside table, and helped Sara sit up. She gently put a large shawl over Sara's shoulders, arranged the pillows, and handed her the bowl with the medicine.
"Ugh, this smells awful..."
"It's medicine to help you recover and get rid of your illness. If you drink it all, I'll peel an Elma for you, so please bear with it."
Elma is a fruit similar to apples from the girl's previous life. Since the technology for cultivating fruit hasn't advanced, it's not as sweet, but it's still a precious sweet treat in this world.
Sara, who had regained her memories of her past life, couldn't bring herself to say she hated the medicine like a child would, so she reluctantly drank the whole bowl in one go. She was grateful that Maria had brought it to her in a cooled state, making it easier to drink.
"Mmm, this is so bitter and awful..."
The strong, pungent smell, combined with the intense bitterness and the rough texture on her tongue, was extremely unpleasant. She barely managed to hold back her nausea and finish drinking it, but the awful taste brought her to tears.
"Maria, I want water more than Elma right now..."
"I have some ready."
Sara quickly drank the water from the cup Maria handed her. Maria was an excellent maid, and Sara was really grateful.
"Do you have an appetite, milady?"
"I don't want to eat anything right now."
The medicine was so terrible it could suppress her appetite. It was as if it was saying, "If you can drink this, you'll get better," and the smell and taste were that bad.
"Very well. If you don't have an appetite, you don't have to force yourself to eat. Please take a rest for now. I'll come back when it's time for dinner."
It seems like it's still early in the afternoon. Maria lazily returned the pillow to its original position and encouraged Sara to lie down. As Sara obediently lay down, Maria quietly left the room.
'It was so bad that I almost lost consciousness. Seriously, I'll kill those guys.'
Sara's personality, which had regained her past life's memories, was quite violent.
