Chapter 32 Ladylike Power And Eagle Eye
As they wandered around the library and laboratory, they realized that a considerable amount of time had passed, and Eliza came to remind them of lunchtime.
"Milady Sara, since the tower is still quite dusty, how about we have lunch in the garden today?"
"The garden?"
"Yes. Although it still needs some work, We had the grass cut and set up a table and chairs in the garden earlier."
"Is that so? Do you have enough for everyone?"
"Yes. The chefs from the main house have prepared a large picnic basket."
"That's so thoughtful of them. I should thank them later."
"It's no trouble at all, thank you for your kind words."
When they went out to the garden, Sara saw that a table setting was prepared in a shaded area. A mountain of food that was easy to grab and eat was laid out before them.
The 6 guests, including Sara and Rebecca, were hesitant to eat at the same table, but once they started eating, the conversation flowed naturally, and they relaxed.
"By the way, it seems that Mr. Paracelsus conducted various experiments in this tower. My uncle said that Paracelsus's documents were lost, but I think they might just be disorganized."
"Yes, Ms. Sara. I have the same opinion. It feels like we need to redo the accounting work."
Sara and Rebecca exchanged glances and let out a sigh. Then, Alicia chimed in.
"May I be in charge of organizing the documents and specimens?"
"You, Ms. Alicia?"
"Yes. This place is a paradise for alchemist magicians. I want to live here and inherit Mister Paracelcus's research!"
However, Theofrastos opposed this idea.
"What are you saying, Alicia? You can't just live here!"
"You're just jealous, Dad!"
"Of course, I'm extremely jealous, but that's not the point. Do you plan to live in this huge tower all by yourself?"
'Is that so, extremely jealous...?'
But then, Amelia and Teresa started supporting Alicia.
"If it's okay with you, I'd like to live here too. Of course, I'll need permission from Mister Alexander first."
"Wait, Amelia's going to live here too? Ah, no, I don't know about that..."
"If that's the case, I'll live and work here too. My workshop is about 30 minutes away by horse carriage, so I can commute, and I can also maintain the distillation furnace I set up."
"Hey, Teresa! What about your mom?"
"My mom is fine on her own. She even went on a date with a young adventurer recently, didn't she?"
'Huh, you mean she's a popular widow? I want to hear more about that story!'
The girls all seem to be really enthusiastic. Honestly, Sara's been excited since she saw the library, so I can understand how they feel.
"We still haven't finished cleaning, and we don't have enough linens and stuff prepared. It'll take some time to get settled, but is that okay?"
"It's okay. We need time to prepare too, and we can take care of our own meals and laundry. We'll bring our own necessities from home, so don't worry about it."
"Umm... But I can't just give permission on my own, so I'll go ask my uncle or grandfather to confirm."
"""I understand."""
After dinner, Alicia asked Sara,
"By the way, Lady Sara, what do you plan to distill?"
"I've been thinking about it, but first, I want to try distilling Elma liquor."
"What?! You're going to distill liquor?!"
"Yes. I want to create a new kind of liquor."
Everyone except Rebecca looked surprised.
"I'm surprised too. When I heard it from Ms. Sara, I was really surprised. Honestly, I'm still half-doubtful about this new wine thing..."
Even Rebecca, who had heard the story before, reacted like that.
"I want to increase the alcohol content through distillation and then age it for a few years. I think it'll be delicious when I'm old enough to drink it."
"Hmm..."
'That's right, if you hadn't touched the distilled liquor, you wouldn't have reacted like that.'
"But, if it's about distilling liquor, it might be within the realm of a pharmacist, don't you think?"
Alexander chimed in, and Amelia nodded in agreement beside him.
"Do pharmacists distill liquor?"
"Yes, they do, Lady Sara. It's common to use distilled liquor as medicine to increase the alcohol content."
"I see."
"Does Lady Sara know about this?"
"I thought it was used to disinfect wounds, but is that not the case?"
"That's correct, but they also make medicinal liquor by infusing various herbs. Actually, medicinal liquor is Amelia's specialty."
"Well, I'm not that good at it..."
'By the way, I heard that in the past, people used to drink gin as medicine...'
"What kind of medicinal liquor do you make, Amelia?"
"I make ones that help with fatigue recovery, and for women, ones that alleviate cold symptoms."
"That's amazing. Do you also make herbal teas that don't use liquor?"
"Yes, I do make some."
"There are herbal teas that are good for beauty, right?"
"That's right. Some help with blood circulation, reduce puffiness, and even have anti-aging effects."
As Sara and Amelia spoke, the women in the room began to pay attention, and the maids standing nearby all leaned in to listen.
'The maids' gazes are kind of intimidating!'
"Would you be willing to research and develop beauty products for women here, Amelia?"
"Beauty products?"
"As pharmacists are mostly men, I feel like there are fewer products for women."
"But I, as a pharmacist, want to focus on research that heals people, rather than just beauty."
'Ah, the maids are disappointed!'
"I understand Amelia's high aspirations. However, I believe that a woman's beauty is created by being 'healthy'. If you don't cure fatigue, get good quality sleep, and eat nutritious food, you can't make your skin beautiful and radiant, and you can't maintain a good figure either. And there are diseases unique to women that are difficult to consult with male pharmacists about..."
"It's true, just like Lady Sara said I've always felt a little regretful about being a woman. I couldn't attend the Academy, and I couldn't register with the Pharmacist Guild either. But, Lady Sara is showing me that there are paths I can take because I'm a woman."
Amelia's eyes welled up with tears, gazing at Sara with reverence. When she glanced to the side, Alicia and Teresa were also looking at her with similar eyes, whispering something in hushed tones.
"There are things women can do too..."
"I can do the same work as men... no, there are jobs that only women can do."
'Ah, no way, I wasn't thinking about anything that noble. I just thought it would make a lot of money, that's all.'
Sara's conscience twinged in pain. However, when she saw the maids standing by, their eyes fixed on her like hawks eyeing their prey, her heart grew calm.
'Ah, yeah. This will definitely make a lot of money.'
