Chapter 67 Pouring Cold Water On The Debate (Literally)
After the commotion with the fairies died down, Sara returned to the tent to obtain permission to use magic from Marquis.
However, as soon as she entered the tent, she heard loud shouting. It seemed like Theofrastos and Alexander were arguing. Jade was trying to mediate, but Marquis and Robert were sitting in chairs, watching the scene unfold.
"What's going on here?"
Then Jade asked Sara for help.
"These two are arguing over what to cultivate, and I don't know what to do."
"I see. So, Grandfather and Uncle aren't going to mediate?"
When Sara glanced over, the two of them looked uncomfortable.
"We don't understand anything about farming, so we can't intervene."
"The debate is getting a bit too heated, isn't it?"
"Getting a bit heated? Is that what you call it?"
The two of them were yelling loudly, criticizing each other's proposals, and banging on the desk. It was an atmosphere where things could escalate into a physical fight at any moment.
"Both of you, please calm down!"
However, no matter how many times Sara called out to them, they didn't seem to hear her, and there was no response. In fact, when a cup on the table fell and broke, the two of them didn't even flinch.
"THAT'S ENOUGH!"
Sara, who had lost her patience, poured a bucket of icy water over the two of them.
"Whoa!"
"Ahh!"
The two of them, drenched in icy water, stopped arguing and turned to Sara.
"Lady Sara, what are you doing?!"
"This is outrageous!"
Of course, Sara didn't listen to their protests.
"That's my line. What are you two thinking? As people in positions of responsibility, aren't you ashamed?"
"This is a debate between experts."
"Can you seriously call this a discussion? You're not compromising your claims and only trying to find faults in each other's arguments. If you call this a discussion, then please take responsibility for it. I don't intend to waste my time on such a pointless thing."
Theofrastos and Alexander, who were dripping with water, protested with angry faces.
"But didn't Lady Sara entrust us with selecting the crops?!"
"That's right. That's why we're having this discussion."
Jade also panicked and followed up, "I've been listening to the valuable opinions of the experts and specialists!"
"As a alchemist and pharmacist, you've only asked about the crops that are in high demand. However, it's up to the farmers, starting with Mr. Jade, to decide which crops to cultivate based on those opinions. Or, if it's within the period when Grandchester is providing compensation, perhaps the gentlemen sitting over there, like Grandfather and Uncle, should make the decision. In any case, it's not up to the two of you to decide."
"No, I don't think it's someone else's problem."
"Then, please don't just stand by and do nothing, Mr. Jade!"
Sara didn't even glance at Marquis, showing no intention of intervening.
"Anyway, Mr. Jade, these two are only stating their desires from their respective positions. It's natural for their demands to differ depending on their positions, and it's only natural for their claims to be different. Do you think they've thoroughly investigated whether the plants they need can be grown on this land?"
Then, Theofrastos and Alexander's faces twitched.
"I only heard about the problems with this land yesterday, and I don't know anything about the climate here. I don't know what the temperature will be like throughout the year, how many hours of sunlight there will be, how much rainfall there will be, or if it will snow. You people, like Mr. Jade, who have been farming in this region for a long time, are the ones who know the most about it."
"But, since these two are experts, they should know a lot about various things, right?"
'Hmm, I think that just because they're experts, they can say anything they want without any conditions.'
"Then, let's hear it from you guys. Either one of you is fine. How much does it rain in this region? How high does the temperature rise in the summer? Does it snow in the winter?"
Neither Theofrastos nor Alexander could answer these questions.
"I see. So, you two're top-class experts as alchemists and pharmacists, but when it comes to agriculture, you two're no different from amateurs."
Theofrastos and Alexander, who finally understood what Sara was getting at, looked at each other and slumped their shoulders in disappointment.
"I apologize, Lady Sara."
"I apologize as well. Let's re-examine the environment of this region and come up with a list of candidate crops."
"I was also rude. I understand that you two are enthusiastic about this, so please also listen to other people's opinions."
Sara used magic to evaporate only the water from the ice water she had made earlier. Even so, they were still shivering, so she wrapped warm air around the two of them.
"Lady Sara is quite skilled at using magic, isn't she?"
"Thank you. It's like a special talent."
"It's almost like you have too many special talents."
"Don't worry about that too much."
'Yeah, it seems like I'm going to show people even more incredible talents from now on.'
"Mr. Jade, please be more aware that this is your own field."
After giving a lecture to the men inside the tent, Sara got to the main point.
"By the way, Grandfather, I'd like permission to use magic to help the farmers."
"Help with magic?"
"Yes. I know it's not something that should be used excessively, but we need to hurry and harvest the rye. We also need to dig holes and burn the remains."
"I see. Well, do as you like, Sara. If anything happens, I'll take responsibility."
"Thank you."
The Marquis gave his permission without hesitation.
Next, Sara turned to Theofrastos and Alexander.
"If we're talking about experts, Miss Rebecca has summoned the fairies in the garden. They might lend us their power, and we might be able to learn some unknown human knowledge. Are you interested?"
Everyone's eyes widened, and they bombarded Sara with questions.
"What? Fairies? Did Revi call them?"
"Wait, Sara. What's this garden? How can fairies be guarding it? Your Grandfather doesn't know."
"I've heard from my daughter that there are fairies in the Secret Garden, but did they come all the way here?"
"Can we talk to the fairies?"
"What are fairies, anyway?"
'Whoa, I expected this, but it's chaos!'
"Let me answer one by one. Fairies can move through space using their own methods, and Miss Rebecca's fairy friend called in the fairies who guard the plants in the Secret Garden. By the way, only fairies can do this, and humans can't. I've experimented and confirmed it."
I'll answer the questions that are likely to come up first. If humans could use this method, it would be considered for commercial or military use.
"That's too bad. So, what's this Secret Garden?"
"It's a garden in the tower where Paracelsus's laboratory is, with all sorts of plants, and the fairies are guarding them, Grandfather."
"I see. So you wanted to take over that tower, including the grounds?"
"Yes. And there are all sorts of documents and books left in the tower. Won't you give them up to me?"
Then the Marquis burst out laughing loudly.
"No, I think Sara should take it and make use of it. If there's a garden and tower that charming, you wouldn't be able to leave Grandchester, would you?"
"That might be true."
Robert also laughed along with the Marquis.
"I think it's more valuable to have Sara stay in Grandchester forever than to have the garden and tower."
Just then, Theofrastos cut in.
"Does that mean the flower garden and those documents all belong to Lady Sara?"
"That's how it is."
"Ugh, why am I serving as the head of the Alchemist Magician Guild? If I were just an ordinary alchemist magician, I'd want to serve you right away! Maybe I should just quit?"
"You won't be hired."
"Why not?!"
"Mr. Theofrastos's salary is probably high, after all."
"I'd work even without a salary."
"As expected of someone who seeks new knowledge more than 3 meals a day. But you won't be hired."
Sara flatly rejected Theofrastos's request. In reality, Alexander, who was sitting beside him, was thinking the same thing, but he had calmed down after seeing Theofrastos's pitiful state.
"Well, well. If it's Mr. Theofrastos, wouldn't Ms. Alicia the Alchemist Girl tell you various things?"
"Ah, the girls have a confidentiality agreement, so I don't think she'll tell me unless you permit it, Lady Sara. Probably Ms. Amelia the (Pharmacist Girl) will also keep the information about the flower garden to herself."
""That's right!!""
'It's just that we promised to keep the secret about the fairy friends, but I want to examine the information about the plants in the flower garden and Paracelsus's documents before making it public.'
