Volume 6 Chapter 31 Compensation Is Coming, Apparently

If we only look at the results, the 4 of us didn't suffer any significant damage. The only casualty was Kyunei's clinic, which was partially destroyed. Fortunately, the valuable and dangerous medicines were stored safely, so there was no problem. However, the examination rooms, corridors, and reception area were damaged.

This means we'll have to close the clinic for a while.

But, unfortunately, we're facing a more critical situation than the clinic's closure.

"...So, what about the intruders who attacked Yukina-kun and the others?"

"They all died right after we subdued them. Even the ones Black Blade and Kyunei-sensei intentionally left alive had poison hidden in their mouths. We can't be too careful with our lives."

Karan, the guild's staff, asked with a serious tone, and Rouza shrugged his shoulders carelessly.

──We were at the high-end inn where Rouza was staying, and we had come to the Mercenary Guild at night.

When we visited the room, it seemed like Karan already knew about our attack. Looking at our faces, he had a strong sense of unease. He didn't do anything wrong, but he felt apologetic.

After hearing from Rouza about the fate of the intruders, Karan's expression turned grave.

"I heard they all died, but it seems like they took measures to prevent information from leaking out. It's far from being the right path, but they're thorough."

"They're from the underground business. Even so, in terms of quality, they're probably around middle to upper-middle class. Otherwise, they wouldn't have dared to infiltrate a house with Black Blade, not just Silver Flash."

Rouza's tone was unwavering. It was as if he had predicted everything from the start. From the moment he appeared at that timing, it was like a scene from a play.

"Hey Rouza, stop beating around the bush and tell us everything you know."

We waited for dawn in Rouza's room, but he just dodged our questions, saying "I'll talk when I get to Karan-dono's place."

"Sorry, but I think it's best to discuss this with your supervisor as well. I don't want to go through the trouble twice."

Rouza let out a deep sigh, a rare sight since we first met.

"Most of you probably expected as much, but the ones who attacked you all last night were after me."

 "Yeah, I figured as much."

The phrase "big catch" said by Gram had been stuck in my head since last night. When I thought about it calmly, it was obvious. There was no better 'opportunity'. Aina and Mikage seemed to have realized it when Rouza appeared.

"Rouza-san, did you plan for this to 'happen' from the start? That's why you could show up at that place, right?"

"Maybe──that concern was lingering in the back of your mind, Aina-jou. So, I secretly had one of my subordinates keep watch at Kyunei-sensei's clinic. But this was really just a precaution, and I didn't expect to be woken up in the middle of the night."

His usual sly smile was gone, and he spoke with a hint of resentment. This situation was not what Rouza had wanted, either.

"I really apologize to Kyunei-sensei. It's undeniable that we're to blame for the destruction of the clinic. We'll take full responsibility for the repair costs, so please don't hesitate to let us know what we need to do."

"That can wait for now. Isn't there something more important we need to discuss?"

"Ah, thank you for your concern."

That's when I opened my mouth.

"So, in the end, the 'bodyguard' job I thought was just a cover for a sightseeing trip actually turned out to be the real deal, right?"

"That's a bit complicated, so let's start from the beginning."

Rouza was deep in thought, hands on his chin, but it was Getsuya who spoke up next.

"The true intentions of those scoundrels have nothing to do with Rouza-sama's safety. However──."

Getsuya's gaze was fixed on someone, and that someone was Mikage, his sister.

"The reason you lot were attacked last night is because of you, Mikage."

 "My...fault?"

Mikage's eyes widened in shock as her name was called out. Getsuya continued to press her, his tone unyielding.

"If you had just followed Rouza-sama's orders and come with us to Sanmoto, this wouldn't have happened. And if you hadn't run away from home in the first place──."

"Hey, that's not fair! It sounds like Mikage is entirely to blame!"

 I couldn't help but interrupt.

Getsuya glared at me, his eyes filled with annoyance, and continued to speak.

"I'm just stating the facts. Outsiders should stay quiet."

"My friends were the ones who got attacked! No matter how you look at it, she's our comrades!"

'No, partner, that's not exactly right. I get what you're trying to say, but...'

Gram's calm tsukkomi was right behind me, and I was in a stare-down with Getsuya.

I'd think Rouza would be someone we could have a decent conversation with, but somehow, I just couldn't get a read on this guy. Even without saying a word, he'd always be on the verge of hostility towards me, reacting to every move I made.

In the tense atmosphere where things could escalate at any moment, it was none other than Rouza who intervened.

"Wait, wait! Whatever you two are fighting about, it's not like you're going to gain anything from it. Can't you just calm down?"

He gestured to stop us, giving Getsuya a light scolding glance.

"You're not even explaining the situation, and yet you're spouting off like that, Getsuya?"

 "...I'm sorry."

"Really, that's not like you at all. ──Well, I suppose I can understand how you feel, though."

And with that, Rouza gave me a sidelong glance, adding a small remark. I couldn't decipher the meaning behind his gaze, so all I could do was furrow my brow.
