Volume 1 Chapter 29 Unlucky Fortune
After finishing octopus fishing, the Whale No. 1 returned to the port.
When I got off the dock, I said goodbye to Whale No. 1 and Hyomon.
Whale No. 1 glanced at me and quickly looked away, while Hyomon touched my face with one of his long octopus tentacles.
"Hyomon says, 'Come again, Lydia... Whale No. 1 wishes you well, my daughter'."
Mr. Tsukuyomi also got off the dock, speaking for the feelings of the sea creatures.
Both of them are so manly.
But they are a whale and an octopus.
Hyomon's tentacle slid away from me, skillfully grabbing a storage box filled with frozen octopuses, and dropped it on the dock with a thud.
Mr. Tsukuyomi gave me the biggest octopus that had been wrapped around me as a reward for my hard work.
"See you, little lady. Octopus is popular, so it'll probably be sold out by tomorrow. Help me out again when I set up next time."
I hugged the giant frozen octopus, which was about my height, in both arms.
It was too big to fit in any bag.
"Once in a while is fine, but please let me know in advance so I can prepare."
Holding the octopus, which was wet with seawater, I nodded.
It was tough, but pulling the octopus out of the trap wasn't so bad.
Plus, it felt nice to be relied on a little.
Next time, I'll bring a change of clothes.
Also, I need to wear clothes that can get wet.
I hugged the octopus and then slung a bag filled with hijiki, miso, Katsuobushi, dried seaweed, and fried tofu over my arm as I said goodbye to Mr. Tsukuyomi.
He gave me everything for free as a reward for helping. It seemed to cover the cost of my wet clothes.
I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
On my way home, I decided to buy some vegetables, and the lady at the vegetable shop saw my messy state and said, "Oh dear, that must be tough," while lending me a basket to carry things.
As I loaded the basket with vegetables and hijiki, holding octopus in both hands, I passed by the butcher's shop where Mx. Margaret was sitting on their usual chair, legs crossed, smoking their aromatic tobacco.
"Oh my. You went shopping at the market and came back all soaked. Did you fall into the sea, Lyd-Lyd?"
"Mx. Margaret! I didn't fall into the sea, but I did catch an octopus."
"An octopus... I wonder if you dove into the sea and speared it?"
"N-no, I didn't do anything that energetic..."
"Right, I thought maybe your obsession with cooking had reached a point where you had to catch your own ingredients."
Mx. Margaret exhaled a puff of smoke.
It smelled like orange chocolate.
"Looks like you were dragged around by Tsukuyomi."
"Yes... that's right. I went to buy hijiki and ended up with an octopus."
"I see. I thought you were confused about Lucian and Ciel, but it seems Tsukuyomi is in the mix too, Lyd-Lyd. Who do you think is better, Lyd-Lyd? Who do you think is better~?"
Mx. Margaret twisted their body and gave me a meaningful look.
Even if they asked who was better, I didn't really understand what they meant.
Maybe it was because I was holding a slippery, wet octopus that my brain wasn't working well.
"What do you mean...? Sir Ciel is a friend, but Mr. Lucian is a flirt, and Mr. Tsukuyomi is just a merchant who really likes octopus..."
"Oh my~..."
Mx. Margaret shrugged, looking a bit exasperated.
"Mx. Margaret, I'm all salty and wet, so I need to take a bath and change... For lunch, I'm having octopus dishes. If you want, please come eat with me."
"Is there any alcohol?"
"No, there isn't."
"You can't have octopus without alcohol... Grilled octopus legs and beer are the best."
"Right now, there are only male customers, and if we serve alcohol, even more men will gather..."
"What's wrong with that? Being surrounded by tough guys at the restaurant is great for the fairy Lyd-Lyd. It's the best!"
"I prefer kids and cute girls... Men aren't dirty... well, not all of them, there are probably some good ones, but still, I like a cute restaurant..."
"You haven't given up yet, huh?"
"No, I'm not giving up...!"
As I tried to pass by Mx. Margaret to say hello, they called out, "Wait a moment, Lyd-Lyd."
"Hmm... I feel a guiding force. I sense the guidance of the Major Arcana... the Moon and the Death card..."
Mx. Margaret's palm glowed, and 2 magical cards floated up.
The first card had a large moon on it.
There were 2 moons. One was a red moon, Rubrum Lunne (Crimson Rose Garden). The other was a white moon, Blanche Runne (White Moon).
The second card showed a skeleton knight. It looked kind of ominous.
"The Moon represents doubt, anxiety, and fear... The Death card means endings. Death and rebirth. It might be a bit tough, but well, it could be good, right?"
"Uh, that's not really good... You said there would be good encounters with Sir Ciel, Mx. Margaret."
"That was a nice meeting, right?"
"Um, yes. I made a friend..."
"Well, this is also a good meeting. Lyd-Lyd, you look better than before."
With a gentle smile, Mx. Margaret beamed at me.
Feeling a bit anxious, I said, "Thank you..." and returned to the restaurant.
