Volume 10 Chapter 2 The Memories Of The Witches' Daughters

Sitting in a chair, I said a prayer before the meal and scooped up some oyakodon with my spoon.

The fluffy, creamy flavor spread in my mouth. It was sweet and savory, with a refreshing taste from the dashi made with katsuobushi.

The chicken was so tender it fell apart in my mouth.

The onions were sweet and soft, delicious.

 "Pumpkin pudding!"

 "Fried horse mackerel!"

Eir-Eir had her face buried in the bowl, munching on the oyakodon.

I scooped some up for myself and fed it to Nel-Nel.

With her ears perked up, Nel-Nel was happily enjoying it.

Ms. Famine, too, was elegantly eating her share of oyakodon, taking small bites and flicking her long tail.

Everyone started eating, saying "Delicious," and praising the meal. I felt so happy.

 "Lydia."

Called by my dad, I was smiling while eating my oyakodon, but then I tightened my expression.

Oh right, Dad had a secret to share.

This wasn't just a meal to enjoy oyakodon.

 "Yes, Dad."

"You saw Eirnelys's memories, didn't you?"

 "I did."

I patted Nel-Nel's head as she looked up at me with a curious expression.

Nel-Nel had stopped fighting and gave me her memories. They were very sad memories.

They belonged to Witch Sylphina, who was trapped under the red moon.

"A long time ago... Sylphina was a princess of Kirschtein. She married God Theobart, a prince from a nameless small country that was always at war with its neighbors, and seemed happy."

 "Ah."

"Then, Goddess Alexandria appeared. Alexandria was cherished by God Theobart as a goddess... and Sylphina felt sad. God Theobart started to pay more attention to Goddess Alexandria, leaving Sylphina behind."

In reality, it might not have just been being left behind; it could have been much worse.

I looked down and then furrowed my brows.

"God Theobart might have... cheated. He might have changed his heart from Sylphina to Goddess Alexandria."

 "...I wonder."

Dad replied with a hint of something in his voice.

I felt that way, but maybe it was different in reality. God Theobart might have had to cherish Goddess Alexandria, the goddess for the country.

I wasn't alive back then, and I only have memories from Sylphina's perspective, so I don't really know.

"I've heard that much from Lydia. I still don't know what happened next."

Sir Stefan said. I nodded and continued.

"Sylphina was always sad, but she still loved God Theobart. And... she had a child with him. Sylphina gave birth to that child. That child was..."

I glanced at Sir Ciel sitting next to me.

I worried if this story would hurt him.

Sir Ciel looked back at me with calm eyes, reassuring me with a slight nod.

"...that child was from Gem's People. Their whole body was made of beautiful jewels... God Theobart took that child, calling it a monster, and... probably killed it."

Eir-Eir and Ms. Famine, Nel-Nel, finished their rice bowl and gathered on my lap with teary eyes.

I hugged everyone, feeling sorry for telling such a scary story.

 "That's a terrible story."

 Sir Roxas said quietly.

"Yeah. To kill your own child. No matter what form they took, they would still be cute. For example, if I had a child with the princess and that child was born as a fox, I would think it's adorable."

 "Sir Rail..."

Sir Rail and my child. I had never thought about it, but if a fox child were born, I think it would be cute in its own way.

I felt my cheeks flush. It was a bit embarrassing.

 "Brother."

 "It's just a hypothetical, okay?"

Sir Rail smiled brightly as he was glared at by Sir Roxas.

"So... Sylphina has become a Witch. She must be in despair. Given her circumstances, it seems understandable."

Sir Stefan said with a pained expression.

"Theobart is an ancestor of the Bernard royal family. The divine ancestor who founded the nation... But hearing that makes me feel like the blood flowing in me belongs to the lowest of men."

"Sir Stefan and God Theobart are different people, so please don't think that way."

"Thank you, Lydia. But I've betrayed you once. Maybe blood really can't be denied."

"That's because there were various circumstances... Sir Stefan and God Theobart are not the same."

 "...That's true, they are different."

As I encouraged Sir Stefan, Sir Ciel spoke in a calm voice.

On the table next to Sir Ciel, a small Fairy dragon was sleeping. Seeing the little creature snoring softly, seemingly uninterested in our conversation, made me feel a bit relieved.

"I read the monument left in the Holy Land Hailshtrul. What was written on it were words of regret and apology from Alexandria... That must be an event beyond Eirnelys's memory."

 "A monument?"

"Yes... I must apologize to you. The memories of Famine, your powers, the Witch's daughter, and then the Witch, Sylphina. All these events are connected, and I was investigating them. And after reading the monument left by Alexandria, I thought I had to bear it all. I thought I had to solve it alone without telling anyone. To avoid hurting you, to keep you out of it."

I glared at Sir Ciel and pinched the back of his large, supple hand tightly.

I heard Mr. Lucian whisper next to me, "So envious..." I wonder if he wants to be pinched, Mr. Lucian.
