Volume 10 Chapter 23 The Youngest Sister

Volume 10 Chapter 23 The Youngest Sister

Sir Ciel moves deeper into the research building of Saintwise.

When Sir Ciel touches a plain wall at the end of the hallway, a red glowing geometric pattern appears, and the wall transforms into a door.

The passage ahead leads down a staircase.

Sir Ciel's light magic illuminates the dark staircase.

"That was over a year ago. A powerful curse brought forth a monster we had never seen before, and it wiped out an entire village in one night."

Sir Ciel's calm voice echoes down the stairs.

The staircase is wide enough that even with 3 of us walking side by side, there's still plenty of space.

Next to me is Mr. Lucian, who is holding my hand because it's dark and dangerous.

On Mr. Lucian's shoulder are Eir-Eir and the others, who keep chatting with him about "pumpkin pudding," "tarte Tatin," and "fried horse mackerel."

I wonder what they're saying. Mr. Lucian can probably hear them.

 I feel a bit envious.

"Over a year ago... when the village was destroyed, huh? It must have been the 4-headed Medusa. Before Leonsroar formed an expedition team, you took it down by yourself, so I only know bits of information."

"Yeah, Lucian. The state of the village was abnormal. It wasn't burned down, nor was it filled with poison; everything, including the buildings, was intact, yet all the villagers were dead. I concluded it was an incredibly powerful death curse."

 "Death curse."

 "Tarte Tatin."

Ms. Famine said, playfully tapping Mr. Lucian's cheek with her paw.

"That's what I'm saying. Conflict, hunger, disease. And in the end, just plain death. Just simple, ordinary death──sister."

 Mr. Lucian translates for us.

Then he furrows his brow and says, "Everyone talks like 3-year-olds, so it's hard to convey, but I think that's what they're saying."

 "...Hehe, cute."

"Everyone calls Lydia 'Mama' or 'Mom.'."

 "E-everyone is happy..."

"You can call me 'Dad' if you want."

 "pudding."

 "tatin..."

 "Fried horse mackerel."

When Mr. Lucian cheerfully declared himself a dad, everyone started playfully hitting him.

Maybe he's saying he's different because I have a puppy dad.

"Ah, I knew it... Back then, I thought it was a rare monster── I captured a part of its still-living body and brought it back. In the Saintwise lab, me and Saintwise's subordinates were cursed to death by the 4-headed Medusa, and we sought help from Ms. Lydia."

 "Oh! That time...!"

I was so surprised that I let out a loud voice.

When Sir Ciel came to me for help.

My days, filled with complaints, cries, and grudges, started to change.

The card shown in Mx. Margaret's fortune-telling was the card of beginnings.

Meeting Sir Ciel── my world expanded.

I didn't know anything, and I thought it was fine not to know. I had no confidence, thinking I had no special powers, wishing not to get involved.

That me back then── I was pretty useless.

 It's quite embarrassing to remember.

Even now, I haven't changed that much.

But I think I've become a little stronger.

I'm not alone. Eir-Eir and the others think of me as their mom.

A mom is supposed to be strong. Maybe.

"Yeah. If Ms. Lydia hadn't been there back then, both me and my subordinates would have lost our lives. My body is tough because of the Gem's People traits, but it was a curse so strong that I couldn't resist... Thinking that the monster from that time was the Witch's daughter makes it understandable."

Stopping in front of a heavy door at the end of the hallway, Sir Ciel paused.

"But, Ms. Eiris and the others had a different vibe. They moved with a clear sense of purpose, while the 4-headed Medusa was just destroying for the sake of destruction, like many other monsters."

 "Fried horse mackerel."

"...that kid is a failure. Eirnelys says they're not smart."

 "Tarte Tatin."

"And the next one who's not smart is Eiris."

 Nel-Nel is pretty harsh.

And Ms. Famine is also quite sharp.

When Mr. Lucian translates, Eir-Eir nibbles on Ms. Famine's tail.

Ms. Famine gives Eir-Eir a playful cat punch.

"...but, Ciel. I can't believe the monster we defeated a year ago is still alive."

 Sir Stefan asks.

That makes sense. I healed the curse, but I haven't seen the 4-headed Medusa.

"I brought back its head, but it didn't die. It's dangerous now, so we've sealed its power tightly and isolated it in the basement of the research building."

When Sir Ciel places his hand on the door, geometric patterns appear again, and the door opens.

A surprisingly bright space spreads out beyond.

It's a large room with no windows.

The room is lit by Magic Stone lamps, and there are several transparent tubes with papers saying 'Forbidden' stuck on them.

Inside the tubes float things that look like hands with sharp claws, fish tails, and other strange shapes in liquid.

In one of them, there's a green girl, about the size I can hold with both hands, with black cloth wrapped around her eyes.

Her lower body is snake-like, and her hair is made of small snakes.
