Volume 10 Chapter 33 Moon Soul Cult Ruins
A man with golden hair and blue eyes, wearing a white robe and having a gentle face, stopped in front of us and bowed respectfully.
"Sir Lucis Anthem, Saint, thank you for coming. Sir Lucis Anthem, it's been a while since your return, and I'm so happy."
"Volks, don't call me that. I'm──."
"Sir Lucian, right? But to us, you are Sir Lucis Anthem. Since you are Sir Lucis Anthem, there's no one left to blame you. The king of Bernard must have already spoken with you, right?"
"Ah. The king wants to create a land that belongs to no one. A place where Gem's People and Kirschtein people can all live together──that's what he said."
"There was talk of you returning to the throne, but you turned it down, didn't you?"
"Ah. I don't intend to revive the country of Kirschtein. I'm fine as I am now."
"We will follow Sir Lucis Anthem's wishes. But please allow us to call you by your name. If no one calls your true name, your late father and mother would be saddened."
As the man said this, he turned his gaze toward me.
"Lydia, this is Volks. He comes from a lineage that has served the Kirschtein royal family for a long time, and he has been assisting me in the Moon Soul Cult."
"Nice to meet you, I'm Lydia."
As Mr. Lucian introduced me, I bowed. Mr. Volks smiled gently and spoke.
"Thank you for the greeting, Saint. My name is Volks. Regarding the Moon Soul Cult──I'm truly sorry for the trouble we caused. Thanks to your power, Saint, we are now able to live peacefully like this."
"Ah, um, are you okay after that?"
"Yeah. There are various complications, but thanks to Lord Wilshark, the oppression against us has almost disappeared. Right now, we're living with the Bernard people. I think it will take a lot more time for us to truly live together, though."
"That's true..."
"I'm sorry for making you look sad. But I feel like, with Saint's power, we've started to remember what's important. We want to cherish what we have, and instead of fighting, we want to change things with love."
"I, um... haven't done anything, but I'm not good at fighting, so I'd prefer it that way."
While I was talking with Volks, Eir-Eir was rubbing its small body against my face, so I rubbed back. I met Eir-Eir in this town. It feels like we've been together for a long time, even though it was just last year.
"Did you come to visit today? Were you here to see the hometown of Sir Lucis Anthem? If so, let me prepare a nice place for you to stay. A perfect spot for newlyweds."
"N-newlyweds..."
"That would be nice, but unfortunately, that's not the case."
Before I could deny Mr. Volks's words, Mr. Lucian interrupted me.
"Lydia, once you're done with your research, let's show you around the town. Do you think you could stay for a few days?"
"Uh, oh... um."
"I don't have many good memories, but still, it's my hometown. I want to show it to you, is that okay? Plus, I think Kirschtein's cooking is a bit different from Bernard's."
"Well, I'm curious about that... and I'd be really happy if you could show me around the town, but, um..."
Does that mean we'll be staying together? In the same room, I mean.
"For now, let's go investigate. Volks, I want to go to the ruins of the Moon Soul Cult, is that alright?"
Before I could respond, wondering if that was okay, Mr. Lucian spoke up. Volks nodded.
"Yeah. Right now, the entrance is blocked off so that no one can get in, but if it's you, Sir Lucis Anthem and Saint, you're good to go. Let me guide you to the entrance."
With Mr. Volks leading the way, I headed towards a certain building in Kirschtein town.
It looked like a tavern at first glance.
Apparently, Mr. Volks and his family live on the first floor, serving drinks and light meals.
There's a hidden passage under the floor at the back of the shop, and if you go down the stairs, it leads to the remains of the Moon Soul Cult's headquarters underground in the town.
"Since then, no one has entered the underground passage. The other entrance in Bernard town has collapsed, so this is the only way in and out. The deeper you go, it's like a maze, so please don't stray too far from Sir Lucis Anthem, okay, Saint?"
"Yeah. If we get lost, we might not be able to return to the surface. Don't let go of my hand, Lydia."
"Y-yes."
We descended into the underground through the stairs that appeared when one part of the floor was lifted.
The light from the Magic Stone lantern that Mr. Lucian held illuminated the dark underground.
The fur of the now larger Mer-Mer sparkled with particles of light, brightening the passage along with the lantern.
Eir-Eir and the others were perched cutely on Mer-Mer's back.
Mr. Lucian tightly held my hand with the hand that wasn't holding the lantern.
The pitch-black passage felt a bit scary, but with Mr. Lucian and everyone else there, I didn't feel too anxious.
