Volume 10 Chapter 41 Breaking Barrier
In front of the royal palace, Mr. Noctis was giving instructions to the Leonsroar members, opening the great hall as a shelter for the people living nearby and inviting them inside.
"Captain! Ms. Lydia, and Mr. Ciel...!"
Mr. Noctis noticed us and waved his hand energetically.
We headed over to him.
"Something different is happening with Tears of the Rose... His Majesty and the Duke Girard's family have gathered and are giving us instructions. Leonsroar is on standby in various districts of the Holy Capital, preparing for the monster's attack, and we're gathering people in one place as much as possible to make it easier to protect them."
"Noctis, sorry for being away. I appreciate your quick response."
"Not a problem, Captain. I'm here for when you're not around. ──But what on earth is that?"
Sylphina's arms were repeatedly hitting, scratching, and pounding against the barrier.
With a rumble, the cries of the people rose, and those who noticed us shouted, "Help us!" "Saint! "Mage...!" "Sir Lucian!".
"Everyone, stay calm! Keep the line and get inside!"
Mr. Noctis's stern voice echoed as he opened his arms to stop the people rushing toward us from the line heading to the palace.
──Everyone is scared.
Of course, they are.
A red moon is descending, covering the sky.
A giant woman's hand from the red moon is trying to break through the barrier.
A horde of monsters is gnawing at the barrier.
I've never seen a sight like this before.
The Holy Capital was protected by the Saintwise, so monsters couldn't get in.
Once, Ms. Famine attacked the Great Temple, but that was the first time something like that had happened.
People who have never been outside the Holy Capital have never seen a monster.
I hadn't either.
──It would be a lie to say I'm not scared.
But I have to pull myself together.
I'm recognized as a Saint at Sir Stefan's coronation.
Now everyone knows that.
So everyone is looking to me for help.
"──It's okay, everyone! We will protect you! So please evacuate safely! It's going to be alright!"
Following my loud voice, Sir Ciel spoke up.
"Please, calm down. If you panic and act recklessly, there will be new injuries. Follow the instructions and evacuate. It is our role to protect this country in the name of Saintwise."
Mr. Lucian also followed Sir Ciel.
"With Leonsroar, monsters like this are nothing. I know it's scary, but you have me, Ciel, and the Saint with you. Please trust us."
Even though people were still trembling with fear, they seemed to calm down a bit and began to evacuate again.
Mr. Noctis let out a deep sigh of relief.
"...But, Captain, what are we going to do?"
He whispered quietly, probably so the people wouldn't hear.
"First, we need to reduce the number of monsters. After that, we'll go to the moon and defeat Sylphina."
"...To the moon?"
Mr. Noctis's eyes widened at Mr. Lucian's words.
"Yes. I'll be going to the moon, Mr. Noctis."
"Uh... but that's strange. When Ms. Lydia says it, it really feels like we can go to the moon. Got it. Captain, leave Leonsroar to me. You just focus on your role."
"Ah, Noctis. I'm counting on you."
Mr. Noctis gave a respectful bow to Mr. Lucian and said, "Hurry and evacuate! Close the doors. We will protect the doors. There's also the Saintwise barrier, so please feel at ease!" as he returned to guide the evacuation of the people.
The central door cannot be used for the evacuation of the people.
From the right side of the square, I entered the royal palace through the mage tower of Saintwise, and as I headed towards Sir Stefan, someone fell from the sky.
I didn't even need to check to know.
It was definitely a hero coming down from the sky.
"Princess! Everyone! I've been waiting! You're late!"
Sir Rail, wearing a fox mask and dressed in black, spun around in front of us and landed gracefully, speaking in a bright voice.
"Sir Rail!"
"It's supposed to be the hero's turn, but the princess isn't here, and neither are Ciel and Lucian. But I'm glad you came! I need to show the people my form as I fight to protect the princess. I'm going to become famous as a hero, for sure!"
The children cheered from a distance, "It's the Fox Mask!" Sir Rail raised his hand high in response and struck a cool pose, declaring, "Hero Fox Mask has arrived!".
"You're already famous, Sir Rail."
"Yeah! It seems like I've become famous without even realizing it."
Sir Rail nodded with a smile at Mr. Lucian's words.
A little later, Sir Stefan and Sir Roxas came towards us from the door of the mage tower.
"Lydia, everyone, I'm glad you came. ──In times like this, I really feel my own powerlessness. Seeing all your faces honestly makes me feel relieved."
"Stefan, this isn't the time to feel powerless. Monsters are just monsters. We can handle them somehow──but that giant moon, and the Witch. What are we going to do about those?"
Sir Roxas said sternly to Sir Stefan, who smiled awkwardly.
"Roxas, you don't have to look so scary. When they see your face, everyone gets frightened. It's going to be okay; we'll manage somehow."
"Brother, how can you be so optimistic? If that thing falls, the Holy Capital will be destroyed. Not just the Holy Capital. This country might not be safe either."
The sky I looked up at was cracking, with sharp sounds echoing.
The voices of soldiers urging people to evacuate resonated.
A low, long rumble, like the rustling of trees swaying in a strong wind before a storm, vibrated through my eardrums and skin.
"It's breaking──."
I murmured in a small voice.
I've made up my mind.
I'm telling myself it's going to be okay.
But I'm scared.
Whenever you fight something, whenever you face something, it's always scary.
"Pumpkin pudding!"
Eir-Eir spread her wings wide.
Ms. Famine jumped off Sir Ciel's shoulder, her beautiful fur standing on end.
Nel-Nel hopped down from my arms to the ground, standing on 2 legs and looking up at the sky.
Med rolled on the ground, slowly lifting her face.
Everyone is staring at Sylphina.
Everyone's──mom.
With a crack like ice breaking, the barrier began to splinter, shattering into tiny hexagonal shapes like a honeycomb.
Monsters, like a swarm of ants, were falling from the sky toward the Holy Capital.
To drown out the screams of the people, Sir Stefan raised the holy sword he pulled from thin air high into the sky.
The holy sword shone beautifully, overflowing with light that illuminated the dark red sky.
