Volume 1 Chapter 22 Mean Villainess, Receiving Punishment
"Look, that teacher with the incredibly nice voice's room"
Rolus and I are now in front of the room marked Eliseo Landi.
There are private rooms, supposedly provided for the teachers, on the upper floors of the faculty building.
Some teachers sleep there, while others use it as a storage room.
I don't know the details.
This is because, fundamentally, students aren't allowed to just walk in and out of those places, so there's no way for me to find out.
So, the reason why Rolus and I are in front of this private room, which is basically off-limits to students, is that we were called here for that punishment.
Initially, the punishment was supposed to take place in Sir Lorentz's classroom today, but due to another student having to stay behind, it was suddenly moved to this private room.
When I knock, a wonderful voice responds with a "Please, come in."
"Excuse me"
As I quietly open the door, a sweet scent wafts through.
Is it the smell of tea and snacks?
The teacher's private room isn't very large; it resembles a small studio apartment with a kitchenette.
At the back of the room is a moderately sized bed that seems meant for napping, along with a stylish leather sofa, and in front of them are 2 desks placed side by side.
Because those desks don't fit very well with this room, I think they weren't here from the start and were brought in for this punishment.
"You're late"
"I apologize"
It seems Sir Lorentz has already started.
I don't know what kind of punishment he was given.
I hurried into the room and was told to sit next to Sir Lorentz.
Rolus sat in front of me.
There were only two desks lined up, so Rolus and I shared one desk.
"I have Lorentz copy 30 pages of the textbook."
I can't believe he's copying the whole textbook!
That means I'll be allowed to copy the whole thing too!?
My expectations grew.
"Elena and her Attendant deserve a lecture from me."
Was I wrong?
Wasn't it a complete copy?
"You seem dissatisfied."
"No."
It's not that I'm dissatisfied, just that my expectations were off.
The teacher brought a high-quality chair next to the desk where Rolus and I were sitting, turning it into a sort of birthday seat.
"First, look at this"
"This is"
"The first-year Attack magic textbook. Can you read it, Attendant? "
"Yes, I can read it"
I secretly put on a smug face, confident that he can read and write because he was taught properly.
"On the first page of this Attack Magic textbook, there are important notes written"
The page the teacher pointed to read about the use of Attack magic.
It said that unlike Defense Magic or Healing Magic, Attack magic can potentially injure others, so it shouldn't be used recklessly.
"Elena, you used Attack magic on your own without reading this note"
"Yes"
"It's different from using Healing magic that you haven't learned"
"...Yes"
I used Attack magic spontaneously, but now I realize that I've done something outrageous.
I had been wanting to borrow someone's textbook to read it, and I also secretly wanted to try it out, but it was not something to treat lightly out of mere curiosity.
"Do you understand why I have to scold you, Elena?"
"I understand. I understand that I have done something terrible."
As I bowed my head and said sorry, Sir Lorentz, who was supposed to be copying out the textbook word for word, spoke.
"Teacher, I consulted Ellie about──"
"I didn't hear it."
The teacher cut Sir Lorentz off.
"Elena, have you read this page? Be careful because it could cause injury to others. Don't use any magic that you haven't learned from the teacher. When using the magic you've just learned, make sure to use it together with the teacher."
"I read it."
"Alright, then copy this text onto paper."
When I nodded, the teacher nodded too.
And Rolus, who the teacher directed his gaze at, nodded in the same way.
After confirming that Rolus and I had copied it down, the teacher turned the page of the textbook.
"Alright, turn to the next page. Here it explains the basics of Attack magic and how to create a fireball."
Wow, so the basics of Attack magic are fireballs.
That means Sir Lorentz was letting the illusion soldiers use basic magic.
...I wonder if the flame sword was a magic he hadn't learned... it's terrifying, so I can't ask the teacher.
"By the way, the flame sword that Lorentz used is an application of fire-breathing magic. You should have learned it at least, but few people actually use it."
People learned it──thank goodness.
Well, if they hadn't, it would mean ignoring the line "don't use magic you haven't learned from the teacher," so my victory in the match would have been revoked.
Just as I was feeling relieved, the teacher had a fireball in his palm.
"This fireball is the very basics. Its power is small, so it's meant to startle the opponent rather than to hit them."
"I see."
It was also written in the textbook that hitting anywhere other than the face would only singe their clothes at most.
And the main usage example was to throw it at the feet of the pests that came to ruin the fields to scare them off.
"Give it a try."
"Huh?"
"The method is written down, right?"
It is, but?
While thinking this, I observed the teacher's expression, which seemed to say "hurry up."
"Um, well, yes."
I was being scolded for using Attack Magic without permission, so I wondered if it was okay to use it here, but the teacher looked like he wanted me to hurry up, so I guess it's okay to use it.
I don't know though.
"Can you try it, Attendant?"
"I don't have much magical power."
"I see, then there's no need to force it."
"I was able to use it, teacher."
A ball of fire is gently floating above my palm.
It's not hot while it's floating like this, but it seems that if I accidentally grab it, I would get burned.
That's what it says in the textbook in front of me.
"Don't just pull it out easily. Well, whatever. Now Elena can use Attack Magic only when she's with me."
As it says in the textbook, I learned from my teacher, so I guess that's how I can use this magic.
"Attack Magic is something that can only be used after going this far. Why did Lorentz let Elena use it?"
With that, the teacher directed his gaze toward Sir Lorentz.
But please wait a moment.
"Please wait, teacher. Sir Lorentz didn't say 'try it.' I created the phantom soldiers on my own."
I just read the textbook on Attack Magic and got a little too excited, so I ended up making phantom soldiers.
"Either way, it was Lorentz who didn't say I couldn't use it."
"I'm sorry, teacher."
Indeed, I couldn't be stopped.
"Well, it's pointless to talk about it now. Elena created the phantom soldiers. So? You mentioned that you had a mock battle, right? Tell me specifically what else you did."
"Um, since my opponent, Sir Lorentz, was using ice magic, I created something that looked like it, and also a bit of lightning magic..."
"Without even being taught by the teacher, ice and lightning?"
"Ah, yes, I apologize."
The teacher began scratching his head after hearing my words.
"Lorentz, what about the ice that Elena created?"
"...It was a larger ice pillar than the one my opponent produced."
I never imagined that the so-called Ice Prince would throw such small ice pebbles.
As I was making excuses in my mind, the teacher groaned in a lovely voice, "Hmm?"
"Elena, even though you wanted to get Lorentz's attention, maybe you were being too rash?"
He said this with a somewhat exasperated look on his face, but his words were so abrupt that I couldn't immediately understand what he meant.
"Teacher, may I say something?"
"What's wrong, Attendant?"
"My lady have no intention of that."
It seems Rolus understood before I did.
"She weren't planning on that? But she must have gone to extremes to become Lorentz's bride. She looked into the phantom soldier match and found out that she can create phantom soldiers and fire swords, as well as how to use ice magic and lightning magic."
"Lady hasn't investigated anything like that at all. So far, the only thing Lady has looked into is the causes of death of the Fifth and Sixth Kings."
"What are you even researching..."
I was pulled back by the teacher.
"Well, a friend of mine who's selected Spell-ology told me that the cause of death of the Fifth King is shrouded in mystery, and that the Sixth King lived a very long life. That's what made me curious. As for Attack Magic, I haven't touched that at all since I didn't have any friends who showed me the textbook."
"Spell-ology, huh. I completely thought you went to extremes just to get Lorentz's bride."
"That's not it. I received the extra textbook for Spell-ology from the teacher, and a friend showed me the textbook for Defense Magic. The only one left is Attack Magic, and I was so happy to finally get to show it to Sir Lorentz that I got carried away, resulting in, well, that disaster."
"You denied it right away. But was it just pure interest in Attack Magic?"
"Yes."
When I answered clearly, the teacher smiled gently.
When someone with a face like a master sculptor smiles, it's too beautiful.
"Alright, I understand. Then I'll give this textbook to Elena. It's something I used back in the day, so it's not very clean."
"Really!?"
It seems I'm not supposed to use it, but if I can read it, then that's enough.
Just as I was feeling happy thinking that, the teacher's face suddenly came closer to mine.
"I'll give you a special lesson. Just the two of us, a special after-school extracurricular lesson."
The teacher said this with a beautiful face and a beautiful voice.
Is this someone from the otome game world...?!
I was a little moved, but only for a moment.
"After school... if it's after school, can't we all hang out together with Rolus?"
"Lady?"
"I don't know how long that extracurricular class will take, but I don't want to keep Rolus waiting."
As long as I can read the textbook, that's all that matters to me, and I have no intention of having a class just to make Rolus wait.
Thinking that, I noticed the teacher burst into laughter.
"I see, it's obvious you're not aiming for Lorentz, and you're not after me either!"
I tilted my head, confused by what he said again.
"I'm not bragging, but there are quite a few students who want to be alone with me."
Ah, the teacher has a good face and voice.
I nodded in agreement.
Since I only found out about the teacher recently, I don't know who this person is, but with a name like Randy, he probably isn't a commoner.
And since he can become a teacher, he probably has a decent amount of magic power and is quite intelligent.
Of course, he would be popular.
"You're not happy about being helpful to Lorentz, nor about being able to have a class with me alone, but you are happy to receive a textbook and worried about keeping the attendant waiting. It's been a while since I've seen someone so pure."
At the teacher's words, all I could do was let out a dry laugh.
After all, isn't this just a roundabout way of saying I'm a weird person?
Probably.
Yeah, and just the fact that I'm looking into the cause of the king's death probably makes me seem quite odd already.
"Well, I understand that Elena didn't use Attack Magic with any ulterior motives. However, what you did is still unforgivable. Even if you didn't know."
"Yes."
"This should be enough for today."
Is this okay, since there was no particular punishment?
Sir Lorentz is still receiving punishments.
"Um, I haven't received any punishment at all..."
"Listen, Elena. Most students hate staying after school like this to be shown their textbooks."
...Even though I was specifically taught a non-chosen Attack Magic?
It almost slipped out, but I managed to hold it back at the last moment.
When I think back, if I had to solve boring math problems after school in my previous life, that would have been punishment enough.
"But hey, it's great that you want to learn enthusiastically. Enjoy learning magic from now on. I'll do my best to help as much as I can."
"Yes! Thank you very much!"
The teacher, hearing my response, smiled once more.
"Also, this isn't a punishment, but if Elena is okay with it, would you like to have another extracurricular class?"
"Huh?"
"I have a few things I want to ask Elena. It might take some time to gather materials, so let's aim for next week."
"Things you want to ask, huh. If it's something I can answer. Also, it's fine if Rolus is with me."
So, it was decided that next week, I'd have another extracurricular class with this wonderful teacher.
There are a lot of precautions, and since there's a possibility of injuring someone, I don't plan to use Attack Magic, but I'm really happy to be able to connect with the teacher if I can learn something from them.
"Alright, then Elena and the Attendant can go home. Lorentz, how much have you copied?"
"Not yet, just 16 pages..."
"Looks like the punishment continues."
"Um, well, good luck, Sir Lorentz..."
I'm going home, though.
No need to hold back.
