Volume 6 Chapter 59 Side Braver Xv
Nils rested his chin on his hand and gave a cheerful smile to Relix.
"You were lucky. These 2 (Bael and Weiss) are among the skilled ones among us."
Relix understood rationally that this was a form of provocation.
But he couldn't resist the impulse rising from deep within his emotions.
"......What do you mean?"
"You should thank that 'Hero (Eiyuu).' If he hadn't injured those guys in Eubarest, you would be displaying corpses by now."
Nils, who had just uttered the words that would most irritate Relix's nerves, waved his hand, and Evil Dragon Vritra flapped its wings.
A fierce wind slammed into the ground, and the massive body carrying the demons began to float.
"I have obtained what I aimed for. Thus, any further fighting is unnecessary. I will take my leave."
"──No, I won't let you! The Holy Flame Blade of Destruction (Lævateinn), come!!"
Relix unleashed its true name, forgetting even the searing pain that burned him, transforming the Holy Sword into a long spear wrapped in white flames.
His face was filled with nothing but impatience and anger.
Before the raging 'anger' of Brave, Nils felt the burning heat on his skin yet shouted with delight.
"That's your naivety too! If it were that Hero, he would have unleashed that 'black blade' the moment Vritra appeared!"
Vritra's throat glowed red-hot, and fierce flames erupted from its open jaws.
Relix ignored it and unleashed a flash of white flame from the Holy Flame Blade.
──The fierce flames and white flames collided, causing a massive explosion with enough impact to collapse the ruins themselves.
As the thick smoke cleared, the Brave, covered in a translucent membrane glowing faintly, appeared unharmed.
Mayuri and Shion sensed danger the moment Relix used the Holy Flame Blade and deployed a defensive barrier around them right after the white flames were released.
"Ha... ha... I can't go on anymore."
"Oh dear... I too am truly out of stock."
Mayuri gasped for breath, leaning on her staff, but could not endure and knelt down.
Shion seemed to lack strength in his whole body, slumping down in a sitting position.
If the two had not poured all their remaining magic into the defensive barrier, the group would have suffered devastating damage.
Even Relix, the wielder of white flame, would not have come out unscathed.
Despite such a massive explosion, the ruins still maintained their shape well enough.
It was fortunate that the blast pressure had allowed them to escape through the hole in the ceiling.
However, there were no signs of anyone other than the Brave group present.
If the demons were gone, the massive body of the Evil Dragon should have left some parts scattered around after that explosion.
But if that too was absent, it was safe to assume they had escaped.
"......This time, we were outsmarted, Relix."
Gabert approached Relix, who was glaring at the large hole in the ceiling where the Evil Dragon had vanished, carrying his greatsword on his back.
Though he had been protected from the explosion itself, his skin peeking through the gaps in his armor was scorched from the aftermath of the white flame he had released just before.
The inside of his armor was likely in a terrible state as well.
"Forget about the demon's parting words quickly," Gabert's throat almost let slip, fatigued. His poor attempt at concern would have the opposite effect on him now.
Relix cast aside even the pain, looking up at the sky with a grim expression.
* * *
A night had passed since the battle with the demons.
Relix and the others had gone to the 'Audience Chamber.'
Though Relix and Gabert were lightly dressed, they had bandages wrapped around various parts of their bodies, and Mayuri and Shion, despite having no visible external injuries, still bore the heavy fatigue from their intense magic consumption.
All of them, showing painful appearances, needed to speak with the 'King' urgently to confirm the facts despite their exhaustion.
"I apologize. The treasure has been stolen."
"It is I who should apologize, Brave-dono."
The king of the country 'Lunatis,' which Relix and the others had visited during their journey, shook his head.
The aged ruler, seated on the throne, wore a serious expression.
"Could it be that the aim of this series of disturbances was to steal the 'treasure'...? I can't deny that I may have taken it lightly due to old customs. What should I say to the former kings?"
In Lunatis, monster attacks had been increasing recently.
Unusual creatures were appearing frequently, and mercenaries alone could not handle it, leading to the national soldiers being called in.
Clearly, it was an abnormal situation, but both the Mercenary Guild and the kingdom were short-handed, and they had not actively investigated, assuming the monsters were in their breeding season.
It was then that the group Brave, led by Relix, appeared.
The king broke off his expression filled with deep regret and turned his gaze towards Relix and the others once more.
"In our carelessness, focusing on immediate issues, we overlooked the greater danger. There is no need for you, Brave-dono, to worry. Rather, without you, the damage would not have been limited to just the loss of the treasure."
"Hearing you say that lightens my feelings of remorse, even if just a little."
Relix and the others, who had begun their investigation, discovered hidden summoning magic circles in areas where monsters frequently appeared.
Indeed, they were very similar to those used by demons in the royal capital.
Further investigation revealed that there was one place in the country where the number of monster appearances was low.
An ancient ruin managed by the kingdom.
A certain number of soldiers were always stationed there, making it the second most fortified location after the royal castle.
However, due to the increased monster activity, it was currently quite understaffed compared to usual.
Believing the culprit behind the frequent monster appearances was targeting the ruins, Relix and the others questioned the king of Lunatis.
The king spoke of a 'treasure' enshrined deep within the ruins, which must never be taken abroad as it was forbidden.
Finally realizing the gravity of the situation, the king dispatched a messenger and ordered the fortification of the ruins, but the situation changed even before the order could be carried out.
The ruins' stronghold suffered devastating damage from an unknown assailant.
Considering the situation, there was no longer any doubt that the attacker was a demon.
