Volume 4 Chapter 23 The Lifeline is Lene's Medicine, That Doesn't Change
The giant octopus sea demon, Kraken, often appears in legends as a monster that attacks ships and devours those on board.
But who would've thought it would have a golden body and be living in symbiosis with a merman?
From its movements, it seems the merman stops the ship while the Kraken's role is to overturn it.
Dealing with the approaching merman's spear, I deliver a precise back kick to the temple area.
I question if fish even have temples, but the head is a vital spot overall, so I decide not to worry about it.
"Count, take care of that merman! You're not compatible with octopuses!"
"Ah, I know!"
With Miloslaf's words in mind, I dash across the deck.
I'm not sure who's the real boss, but when it comes to battle, he should be the one making accurate judgments.
Just as he said, I'm not well-suited to octopus-style fighting.
My tentacles get bounced back when I attack, which is the real issue.
It's better to deal with the merman first.
Well, even if mermen are mermen, I can't use fist attacks because their scales might cause injuries, making them troublesome.
There aren't many mermen, but we don't have many fighters on our side either.
We do have bodyguards, but usually, being attacked is part of the deal when you're on a ship.
Therefore, we have long-range countermeasures like magic and alchemy long rifles, but we're not prepared for direct boarding.
"Hmph!"
In the middle of the chaos, I kicked the merman in the ribs, silencing him with a swift side kick.
Wait, do mermen even have ribs...?
Huh?
Why is the captain here?
"Th-Thank you for the help! Lord Huntwerker is indeed strong..."
"Well, I am a Third Rank Adventurer after all. But why is the captain on deck? It's dangerous!"
I had to ask, bewildered.
If something happens to him, the ship will lose its command.
"No, even in an emergency, I won't give orders unless I'm seen! I always lead from the front, even in battle!"
"Oh, I see...?"
Yeah, it seemed like he was too busy being chased to give any commands.
Plus, it's boiling hot.
Looking around, it seems the other mermen thought their flag colors were too ugly, or maybe they just fled to the sea.
That leaves only the Kraken──
"Even he's struggling, it seems."
Miloslaf's movements are as energetic as ever, showing no signs of fatigue, but his greatsword seems dull.
He's hacking at the Kraken's tentacles, but not cutting through.
"In the name of Ryuuji, let this blade pierce through anything,〈Sharpness〉!"
I used the power of the 〈Magic Stone of Elmusca〉 to remotely enchant Miloslaf's greatsword.
Instantly, the enhanced blade began to slice through the Kraken's tentacles.
"Oh, Count's enchant magic! That's a big help!"
"Just hold on a bit longer! We need to deal with the Kraken!"
"No problem, sir!"
Miloslaf answered while skillfully dodging the many approaching tentacles.
He's scary as an enemy, but as a friend, he's super reliable.
Now, I have some tools that can help in this situation──Lene has given me various things.
"Setting it on fire... won't work well in water, so maybe freezing it? But the problem is, how do I break it after freezing?"
I have several freezing explosives.
But freezing part of the giant octopus won't matter if I can't break the Magic Core.
"Using the Alchemy Long Rifle is an option, but I don't know where the octopus's Magic Core is..."
While mumbling to myself and rummaging through my magic bag, I spotted an explosive and stopped.
"...If I use the freezing explosive and this, I can take down not just the octopus, but also the mermen."
What I held was an explosive made from the materials of the Shocking Magic Stone, created during the process of making the Magic Stone of the Distant Bond.
I've tried it on land, but never underwater.
But I think it will have incredible power.
I'm a bit worried if the ship will be okay.
"For now, I have no choice but to try."
I grabbed a few freezing explosives and the Shocking Explosive, then hurried to Miloslaf.
