Volume 4 Chapter 24 What Was the Monster's Aim?

On the left side of the deck, pieces of golden tentacles lay scattered.

If it were a normal octopus, maybe you could eat those legs as food, but I definitely don't want to eat this stuff.

Miloslav, who made those tentacles, didn't look tired at all. He just swung his greatsword with a bored expression.

For him, this must be nothing more than a boring task.

 "Sorry to keep you waiting."

"Hey, did you find a good plan?"

"Yeah, we're going to use explosives."

 "Explosives? But they're underwater!"

Without looking back, Miloslav sliced through the tentacles, clearly doubting my idea.

He stayed at my place for a while, so he should know what explosives really are.

If he's imagining normal explosives, then, like he fears, they won't work well underwater.

But the ones we use are special kinds.

They don't use fire at all, so they keep their power even underwater.

 "Just watch me, okay!"

I said that and threw a bottle of freezing explosives at the Kraken.

With the pin pulled, the bottle arced through the air and landed on the octopus's head, then exploded.

The broken bottle sprayed the freezing agent onto the Kraken, and its head quickly started to freeze.

Its central nervous system seemed to stop working because the tentacles attacking the ship went limp and slipped slowly into the sea.

 "Hey, did that work?"

"No, not yet. We could just run away now, but if we want to safely pass this route, we need to take care of that Kraken first. So──"

Finally free from the tentacles, Miloslaf rotated his shoulders and I tossed the pin from the shock bomb bottle towards the sea, slightly off from where I had thrown it before.

 "Hey, you missed the mark!"

"That's fine. Now, how much power does it have──"

My words were cut short as a thunderous roar echoed from the sea surface.

Almost at the same time, the ship nearly capsized as it absorbed a surge wave on its side.

* * *

"...Please consider the consequences, Lord Huntwerker..."

 "I'm sorry..."

After repelling the kraken's attack and finishing the cleanup, I found myself apologizing to the captain in the ship's cabin.

I could tell Miloslaf was trying to hold back his laughter in the background.

Bastard, this isn't the time to laugh.

"Heh heh..., that was some strong explosive, even froze the kraken to dust, and the mermen hiding underwater were floating belly up, along with the fish."

"...Actually, the explosive itself isn't that powerful, but it's specialized for shock. You know how a big rock thrown into a river can shock the fish into fainting? It's based on that principle."

Water seems to transmit shock waves easily, which is why that shock bomb was the perfect tool for the sea.

Of course, since the shock waves, it affects the ship too.

Fortunately, the ship seemed unharmed, but if there was a hole in the hull, it would have been no time for apologies.

"By the way, Captain, did that octopus appear during the last voyage too?"

"Ah, I've been wondering about that as well."

I joined in on Miloslaf's question.

The captain shook his head and said no.

 Well, yeah, I guess so.

If we had met it, this ship wouldn't even be here now.

"Yeah, probably. But don't you think it's weird? That it attacked this ship?"

"What do you mean, 'this ship'?"

I didn't understand what Miloslaf was saying, so I asked again.

It's not like the Kraken wanted to attack this ship or any ship in particular, right?

"Think about it. This ship is the flagship, right in the middle of the fleet! Why would it attack the ship in the middle, which is hard to get to?"

 "..."

Now that he said it, yeah.

The octopus shouldn't be smart enough to know that "if we destroy the flagship, they'll lose control."

So why did it attack the flagship?

Why did the Monster that didn't show up on the first and second voyages appear now?

Also, that octopus and the fish-man were both golden Monsters created by that Dark Mage.

It's hard to think it was just a coincidence.

"Are you saying the Monster had a reason to target this ship?"

"That's my guess. And there's a different condition than the first and second times. You get it, right?"

 "..."

I was silent, not saying anything.

Because the condition is... me and Miloslaf.

Are you saying the Monster came after us, or one of us?
