Volume 4 Chapter 37 The Crisis Was Already Approaching

Because the outer wall construction was going well, Lene and I had free time to work.

We needed as many magic stones and medicine as possible.

But the civil war was only calm in Sartzstadt and Raudinger, and the areas around them.

The spies from the Romanov Empire, who had started uprisings in other regions, were doing a great job.

The northwestern region was already half under their control, including the Empire's interference.

'It will be difficult to push back in the Goldmont area of the northwest.'

 "Is that so..."

His Excellency Prime Minister Schnorr's voice sounded dark over the long-distance communication.

I wondered if it was possible to be pushed back so far, even though Romanov had a large population and wasn't even a neighboring country.

"Goldmont hasn't fallen yet, but the reason the northwest is almost half under control is because of Guant's annexation, right?"

 'Yes, exactly.'

His Excellency Prime Minister answered my question right away.

After the Romanov Empire started interfering, the Guant Kingdom in the northeast quickly asked to be annexed by the Empire.

Then, the civil war stopped perfectly, which was a clear answer.

The Guant Kingdom, now part of the merged Romanov Empire, has started to interfere with other countries, and the southern part of Goldmont has fallen.

The Romanov soldiers who came through there have intervened in the civil war in the northwestern part of our country.

Well, it's all a show they put on themselves.

"──I understand the situation for now, thank you. That means Sartzstadt could become the front line, right?"

In the mountainous Beistein Kingdom, there are 2 routes from the northwestern region to the Capital City.

You can either take the steep, up-and-down eastern mountain path, or the flat southern coastal road that includes many towns, including Sartzstadt.

And, heading south from the northwestern region, you'll find Sartzstadt.

So, there's a high chance this place could become a battlefield.

'As you say, regarding the outer wall construction, I humbly request your assistance.'

The regular communication with His Excellency Prime Minister Schnorr ended with such a topic.

It seems the situation is getting worse day by day.

* * *

Since the security situation to the north of Sartzstadt has deteriorated, to prevent unwanted people from entering, a wall was constructed between the saltwater lake and the forest in front of it, and a checkpoint was built after the civil unrest was suppressed.

Although it's not as impressive as the new outer wall currently being built in Sartzstadt, it's a makeshift wooden structure.

But it's designed not to be easily broken through.

"I came to see what's happening, how is it?"

I brought the soldiers who live outside of Sartzstadt.

I often come here to check the checkpoint.

Lord Reichner should do this, but he's busy, and I can't just do nothing.

"Lord Huntwerker! Yes! Nothing is wrong here!"

The captain of the guards, who has one or 2 people, came down from the tower and saluted me.

I'm thankful for them being here to stop the bad guys, but I'm also here to make sure they don't betray us and let the bad guys in.

 Well, I can't say that.

"Lord Huntwerker, may I ask about the war situation?"

 "Yes, of course."

I'm not just here to check on the guards.

I get information from His Excellency Prime Minister Schnorr every day, so I have to tell everyone what's happening.

"Marquis Burgmüller said that the northwest is almost half taken. We're losing, and if the capital of Marquis Burgmüller's land, Kleinburg, falls, the Romanov army will come south in about 5 days."

 "I see..."

The captain looked worried when I told him.

The Romanov army won't be here tomorrow, but they must be worried.

But here, there are only a tower, a gate, and a simple barracks; it is a fortress that must not be breached.

I know it's tough, but I want you to stay tense and focused.

"The situation is really serious. I know it feels like a heavy responsibility, but please don't overlook even the smallest odd feeling at the checkpoint."

 "Yes! Understood!"

As the captain saluted with a tense look on his face, I thanked them and turned to head back home.

Staying too long would just get in the way of their work.

 Setting boundaries is important.

 That's when it happened.

From the top of the tower, I heard a painful shout, "Captain!"

 "What's wrong!?"

The captain hurriedly started to climb the tower.

As for me, I couldn't just abandon the situation and go back, so I stopped in my tracks.

"T-the enemy is attacking! The enemy army is approaching!"

 "...Huh?"

I couldn't help but turn around and shout.

 An attack?

 An enemy army?

 That's ridiculous.

 Kleinburg hasn't fallen yet!

Even if it were to fall today, there's no way they could arrive this fast.

 "Let me check!"

To confirm the situation, I climbed up the tower too.

I hoped it was just a mistake, that they had mistaken a merchant caravan for an enemy, as I reached the top of the tower.

And on the other side of the saltwater lake──there was no mistaking it, soldiers from the Romanov Empire, clad in armor from the former Guant Kingdom, were advancing this way, bypassing the saltwater lake.
