Volume 7 Chapter 5-2 Come to Think of It, I Actually Got Called to the Principal's Office Quite a Lot

That's when Randy made a grand show of his distaste.

 "The Student Council, you mean?"

 "Indeed. As it stands, it's..."

Nodding, Lucius watched as Randy slouched on the sofa, gazing up at the ceiling. Randy's "annoying bunch" referred to the Student Council members. The Student Council President, elected through a school-wide general election, has the authority to appoint officers below the vice-president and to call student general meetings.

Moreover, rules decided upon in the student general meetings gain validity within the academy with the approval of the king. But there is no king at the academy now.

Therefore, matters decided in the student general meetings will take effect after being approved by the acting administrator in place of the king.

Of course, the student general meetings cannot decide on expulsions.

"You're saying the Student Council wants to set new standards?"

Lucius nodded in agreement with Randy's words.

During the academy days, there were several regulations concerning expulsion, such as if someone severely violated public order and morals, or if they continuously obstructed the academy's operations. The latter could include repeated disruptions of classes or bullying other students.

Randy is likely talking about the possibility of the Student Council establishing some standards regarding the latter.

"By the way, how do you scrap something like this at Maximilian Academy?"

"You need the signatures of over half the students to appeal to the board. It's only after the approval of over half the board that it's..."

 "Kicked out before that, huh?"

Randy looked up at the ceiling again as Lucius nodded in disagreement.

"Fortunately, the chairperson is absent now, and I can't see Edgar cooperating with the administrator."

"But the new school year has started. That means there's going to be a new Student Council President election, right?"

Lucius informed him that Dario had already announced his candidacy for the presidency.

"The son of the traitorous Prime Minister... I see. Some scheme of the administrator and his minions?"

Randy looked up at the ceiling once more, truly throwing up his hands as if to say, "This is completely hopeless."

"Out of curiosity, what kind of rules are they planning to add?"

To Randy, still staring at the ceiling, Lucius murmured, "The Academy Discipline Regulations, that's what they said."

 "The academy... what?"

With a furrowed brow, Lucius repeated the previous clause as Randy turned back from the ceiling to face him.

"It's a rule that's been around since school days, but now, under the guise of making student voices easier to reflect, it lets students anonymously report problem behavior or lack of initiative among themselves."

 "Whoa, wait, seriously..."

Hearing Randy suddenly speak informally, Lucius nodded seriously and confirmed, "Yes, it's serious."

"Of course, just an anonymous report alone won't get someone expelled, but if that clause is approved, the school would have to take some kind of action."

For example, a report about class misconduct could lead to interviews with the teacher in charge, oral warnings if true, or penalties like service work. They'd also investigate any negative influence on others, verify the facts, and if no improvement is seen, worst case...

"Aren't they targeting me with this?"

"Already, several others besides you are on the initial list."

Apparently, they're already preparing, and not just targeting Randy ── but that word means nothing to Randy right now. What matters is...

"I'm on the list too, huh."

Randy looked up at the ceiling again. Since he said "besides you," it's clear he's included. It's like something out of a dystopia, but Lucius can tell the other side probably has some secret plan to push this through.

So, this clause is basically almost decided already.

 "Ah, it's over..."

Randy, face hidden as he gazed at the ceiling, clearly at a loss; Lucius, perhaps feeling the tension, said nothing.

After a moment of silence, it was Randy who broke it with a muttered, "This is so frustrating."

"I could just blow the whole government away."

Usually, such a joke would be shrugged off, but Lucius, who knows Randy and Ellie behind him, can't laugh ── it's not funny. It'd be enough to wipe out not just the government, but the entire old capital.

 "Well, uh, calm down, Victor."

Lucius hurriedly gestured for Randy to relax.

 "The clause isn't decided yet."

Lucius gave a knowing smile, and Randy looked at him with suspicion.

 "I have a proposal, then..."

With that smile, Randy finally understood the meaning of being called here today. He understood, but it was already too late.

"...Randolph Victor. Would you like to run in the student council election?"

It's the expected words, but some things are still hard to accept.

 "HAAAH?!"

The biggest question mark of the day, and all of Randy's unspoken feelings.
