Volume 7 Chapter 7 Ideas Come Suddenly
The day after Randy decided to run for student council president...
"I said I'd run, but what do I actually do now?"
On the way to school, Randy tilts his head, and Ellie, smirking, confidently says,
"It's simple. Beat everyone up, and you'll be the top."
"Are you stupid? You're not Victor."
"Who's the idiot?"
Ellie pouts, and Randy, sighing, teases, "It's you, it's you."
"Anyway, jokes aside..."
Randy, tilting his head, looks at Liz, while Ellie also sighs and gazes at her. Ellie, as if saying "Say it," with her chin, subtly nudges Randy. Liz, understanding, nods big and opens her mouth.
"You'll need at least 2 teacher recommendations, so you must get those."
Then Liz explains that the run ends once he submits his letter of recommendation along with the application to the student office.
"At least 2 teachers, huh..."
Randy manages a forced smile. No teachers come to mind. He can't expect much from the teachers of core classes, which are required. As for electives, only land management, but even that doesn't look promising.
"One is the principal, I guess..."
"The principal... no, the branch head, shouldn't count as a recommendor."
Liz's addition makes Randy slump. Of course, if the school's top recommended him, he'd stand out from other candidates; it's normal for him to be excluded.
"This is bad. Isn't the road tougher than I thought?"
Ellie, seeing Randy tense up, tilts her head and asks,
"What about those guys? The twin instructors, remember?"
"Oh! Instructor Gardo and Burk, right?"
Randy, recalling the burly twins, claps his hands. Those 2 are still somewhat connected compared to others. The voyage nearly hits an iceberg, but just before hitting rock bottom, they spot the school gates and a faint light.
The school as usual. But today, there's a different vibe ── a lively, playful atmosphere. The courtyard visible beyond the gates is packed with students.
"Huh?"
As Randy muttered, a few students dashed past, shouting, "Candidate for student council president!"
The students who overtook Randy moved into the crowd gathering in the front yard──it's clear from a distance that at the center is a signboard, kind of like those that show rankings for exams.
"Is my name going on there too?"
From afar, Randy looked thoughtfully at the signboard as Ellie sighed, "You're in too much of a hurry."
"The instructors might not agree to that."
"Even if you're recommended by other candidates, that's no good."
Their words are cut off by the chatter of a few students rushing past; the faint light seen earlier dims, and Randy feels like a swelling wave is rocking his boat.
"I'll think about that when the time comes."
Still, the boat set sail. Once paddled out, Randy had no choice but to keep going forward.
"That's the spirit."
"Yes. For my servant number 2, that's good enough."
Randy, smiling, heads towards the academy building with the two others who nodded at the same time. Liz and Ellie don't ask if he's checking who's around or what they look like──because even if they did now, it wouldn't change anything. It's always the same, no matter when they look.
"First, let's finish the morning classes."
The air around Randy and the others, a bit warmer than usual, spreads out as they stretch greatly.
* * *
"Recommendation? For the student council president?"
Burk's loud voice──so loud it seemed to make Randy's ears ring──met his words with a strained smile, "...Yeah."
After finishing the morning classes and lunch, Randy and the others came to the training ground──turned into a break room for instructors Gardo and Burk──using their free afternoon.
The building next to the arena is called a training facility──simply put, a weatherproof indoor sports hall.
It's smaller than an outdoor arena, but it has various rooms suited for different purposes, used as needed.
The mirror room is for checking one's form.
The magic room has walls with barriers, used for testing magic.
These rooms serve different functions, used not only for classes but also for combat club activities.
It was only natural that Instructors Gardo and Burk, who also coached the club, would use this training ground as their makeshift break room.
Inside the newly built 'instructor's room,' a booming laugh echoed once more. "Victor as president, huh?"
"I think it's a good idea. What about you?"
"...Yeah, I think so too."
Gardo's voice, in stark contrast, was calm and clear. Liz and Ellie exchanged glances, their expressions brightening at his quiet but audible agreement.
"I don't know about the written test, but when it comes to combat skills, you're far above us."
Gardo's self-deprecating tone made Randy shake his head in disagreement. As he'd told them before, it all came down to experience. No matter how fast or strong you were, nothing beat experience.
In life-or-death situations, the number of times you'd made split-second decisions that saved your life couldn't be underestimated.
"Well, anyway, you'd say yes in a heartbeat, right?"
Gardo pulled a sheet of paper from his desk, signed it, and handed it to Randy. The paper read 'Letter of Recommendation.'
"Take this to the student affairs office, and your candidacy is complete. Come on, Burk. You too—"
Prompted by Gardo, Burk quickly signed the recommendation letter and handed it to Randy with a "Good luck."
Randy had thought they might recommend him, but he was still surprised at how easily they'd agreed. He bowed his head, looking a bit bewildered.
