Volume 2 Chapter 26 Let's Make Magic Tools!
Early morning before the sun rose. Last night's cold made frost form, and the few remaining grasses turned white.
"It's especially cold this morning. Starting the new year with a crisp feeling is nice."
As the world slowly changed from night to morning, Cain kept running as usual. His breath was white and long, floating away.
When his run ended, the sun appeared and warm light spread out. Cain bowed once, then clapped twice toward the sun.
"Goddess Gardea, happy New Year. Last year had its troubles, but thank you for your support. Please continue to protect my family and everyone in the territory this year, too."
He bowed deeply, then looked up.
"Alright! This year, I'll do my best again!"
Cain shouted his New Year's promise loudly.
In this world, even on New Year's Day, things are pretty much the same. Only a few merchants come to greet Luke in the town streets. No shrine visits or New Year's money.
Since everything else is normal, Cain can continue from where he left off yesterday. He heads back to Benjamin's room.
"Elder Brother Ben, Cain here. Can I ask to continue from yesterday?"
Cain knocked and called out to Benjamin through the door.
"Sure, come on in."
Benjamin's voice answered from inside.
"Excuse me. Is Elder Brother Chris here today as well?"
"What's with that tone? I was just waiting to talk with my cute little brother."
"What's with that annoying old-man attitude? You're handsome, so don't be so disappointed."
"Yeah, yeah. Let's keep it friendly. Cain, we don't have much time, so let's start. Yesterday, it was about taking [Mana] out of magic stones and letting [Mana] be absorbed into them, right?"
"Yes, today they want to try turning a 'structure' of [Magic Inscription] into a magic circle."
"Well then, let's start right away. What do we need to do?"
"Nothing special is needed. Could you lend me the magic tool that has the [Mana] extraction structure written on it?"
"Is this enough for the teaching material?"
Benjamin took out a small silver plate about the size of a postcard from his bag. The plate had a magic stone and structure engraved on it, and it was a tool that could use the daily magic of [Light].
"[Magic Inscription] allows you to use the [Engraving] skill and engrave the structure onto a thin mithril-coated metal plate, turning it into a magic tool."
"Oh, so you don't carve by hand? In other words, you can't do it by hand, then?"
"No, until I get the [Engraving] skill, I carve and make it by hand. But that's pretty tough. If I mess up even a little, the magic doesn't activate, or it needs extra [Mana], making it a messy magic tool."
"That sounds hard. So the [magic circle transformation] of [Magic circle magic] can be used from the start, right? That's the difference?"
Cain took the magic tool from Benjamin, used [Analysis], then activated [magic circle transformation], and a magic circle appeared.
""Wow...""
Benjamin and Chris both sighed in amazement, voices blending together.
"Huh? The [Light] activation structure got turned into a magic circle too? Just the first structure, right? Can't we make only the first one with a magic circle?"
"Let's try making just the first structure with [Engraving]."
Cain took out the silver plate from his bag and, with the [Engraving] skill, created a magic tool with only the first structure.
"Thanks, Elder Brother Ben! Now, [Analysis] again, then [magic circle transformation]. Oh, it worked!"
The smaller magic circle appeared than the last one.
"Next, I'll transcribe it with [Magic Circle Transcription]."
Cain transferred the magic circle onto the prepared sheepskin parchment.
"So, this is the magic circle that takes [Mana] out of a magic stone, huh? Benjamin pointed at a small spot in the center of the magic circle, about the size of a 500-yen coin."
Benjamin pointed to a space about the size of a 500 yen coin in the center of the magic circle.
"Uh, I think that's right."
He explained while analyzing the magic circle on the sheepskin scroll.
"Next, I need to copy the [Hot Water] magic circle... Huh? For now, I'll just write the [Magic Circle Transcription] beside it. How do I connect them, though?"
There were about ten magic circles of different sizes lined up on the sheepskin, spaced about 10 cm apart.
"Maybe just draw lines to connect them?"
Chris said simply, looking at the two magic circles.
"Elder Brother Chris, that might work. If we write with Mana Ink, it should be possible. Which ones do you want to connect?"
"Well, I guess just connect this mark here to that one," he said, pointing at the ▼ marks.
While the two of them held their feather pens and talked,
"Nah, it's better not to do that. Messing around with stuff like this can easily cause unpredictable problems,"
Benjamin muttered thoughtfully.
"Maybe we should just stop, Cain." "Yeah, I agree, Elder Brother Chris."
Both of them quietly shared a dry laugh and slowly set down their feather pens.
"Hmm... We really need a way to connect these. Without that, turning it into a magic tool will be hard. Should I write some characters on it? Or do something before copying?"
Cain stared at the two magic circles, thinking while analyzing.
"Since we're transferring the [Mana], maybe adding the '++<' symbol in the [Magic Inscription] would help?"
"Oh! That's a good idea──let's try adding it."
Between the two magic circles, Cain drew the symbol "++<". In that moment, the magic circles seemed to glow brightly to Cain. Then, as he touched the magic circle and chanted "[Hot Water]", hot soup poured out.
"Yes! It worked!"
Cain jumped up in joy.
"Ca〜in? What are you doing with this?"
Benjamin pointed at his sizzling, soup-soaked bag, radiating a cold killing intent.
"I-I'm sorry!!"
Cain performed his first ever jumping dogeza in this new world.
