Volume 3 Chapter 11 Is There Any Good Magic?

After finishing dinner and taking a bath, Cain was reading the Sage's Book in his room. He hadn't had the chance to read it slowly and thoroughly until now.

Thinking about the upcoming public works, he was scanning the Sage's Book for any other useful magic spells.

"This Sage's Book is like a sage's memoir, after all. It's not well-organized, though. I wish they'd at least added an index."

Flipping through the pages one by one, Cain copied the magic names and attributes onto a wooden board.

"This magic looks interesting. [Ice Thorn] Effect: Ice thorns grow toward the target, entangle it, and freeze it. Should I teach Elder Brother Ben about this? Let's see, what else..."

As he continued copying, his hand paused at a certain wind magic.

"Huh? What's this [Blow] magic? Effect: Summons a gust of wind to any place within a 10-meter radius from the caster. The power is about the strength of cloth flapping. It was developed to extinguish distant lights. Hmm, seems useful for when you forget to put out a light. And maybe it was used for sneaking into places?"

 (But... any place? Cloth flapping?)

"Could this be a dream magic for men!? No, no, no, the sage wouldn't use magic for such worldly things. I guess I'm just too worldly, huh?"

Flipping through the pages, he found [Stove], a [Seal Magic], but there was an X written in front of the magic name.

"What's this? This [Stove] magic? Magic name: [Stove] Effect: Raises the temperature of objects in a kiln from 100 to 1,000 degrees. Oh, this looks like a convenient magic. The required mana is only 50 for 100 degrees, so it's not that much. Wait, huh?"

After the explanation, it was written: *'This magic failed. Instead of raising the temperature inside the kiln, it raised the temperature of everything inside the kiln. With this, the food will be completely burnt.'*

"I wonder if the sage wanted to make a pizza oven? Raising the temperature of everything inside the kiln to the set temperature is actually pretty amazing. I wonder if it can be used for something? If everything inside is affected, then gratins and the like would be ruined. How about pottery?"

Cain pondered various possibilities, thinking, *"How about this? How about that?"*

"Since it raises the temperature of everything inside the kiln... I got it! If I put water in, it should boil!"

* * *

The next day, after finishing his daily routine, Cain went to the training grounds with Barvish.

"Barvish, today I want to try a certain magic, so help me out. First, I'm going to make a pot, and I want you to fill it with water. Please."

"Understood, Sir Cain. But before that, could you tell me what kind of magic it is? If it's too dangerous, it might be better to wait until Sir Randolph returns."

Barvish agreed to help but asked about the danger of the magic.

"It should be fine. Originally, it was a magic to set the temperature of everything inside the kiln to a specific temperature, but this time I'm using it to boil water."

Cain drew a pot on the ground and, inside it, sketched a magic circle with steam to represent boiling water.

"This looks like it should be fine. During the test, can you use the magic from a little further away?"

"I'll flow the mana and then step back. I don't think the water will boil instantly as soon as the mana flows, after all."

After that, Cain created a pot about the size of a long, vertical pot used in ramen shops using [Create Clay]. Then, he transferred the [Stove] magic circle he had set up inside to the pot, and it was ready.

Cain and Barvish carried water from the well and filled the pot about 80% full. Cain placed his hand on the edge of the magic circle, flowed the mana, and quickly stepped about 3 meters away.

Barvish and the others watched, ready to escape at any moment. Steam began to rise from the pot with a faint hiss, and after several dozen seconds, the sound of boiling water bubbling could be heard, with steam rising in great quantities. The steam continued to rise, and it was some time before it finally stopped.

"The steam has stopped. Is it safe to approach now?"

"Let's wait a bit longer, Sir Cain."

Then, after about ten minutes, he went to check on the pot and found that the water had completely disappeared.

"This is a failure. I didn't write down the duration, so I kept the water in the pot at 100 degrees and it all evaporated."

(Dangerous, dangerous. Now that I think about it, since the magic effect range is this pot, if the water runs out, it could cause a steam explosion. I need to analyze this magic a bit more and adjust the range specification and magic duration.)

He informed Barvish that today's magic experiment was a failure and that they would communicate again to redo the experiment after making improvements.
