Volume 1 Chapter 12 The Flimsy Classroom Floor of the Class Collapses and Is Frightening

 "Whoa!"

A loud scream, like something straight out of a manga, echoed through the afternoon in Z Class. Along with it came the sharp creak of wood under pressure.

After lunch, everyone was sleepy. Most students had their textbooks open but were nodding off quietly, making the classroom feel both calm and oddly loud at the same time.

 "What's happening?"

 "Help me!"

 "Hey, the floor's breaking!"

The noise came from the source of the chaos. Looking over, I saw that a chair's leg had punched through the floor, and someone had fallen through the hole. In the original Game, nothing like this would happen in Z Class—there's no reason for a player to be here. Mostly, the story follows Blaze and the events in SS Class.

This game's school setting is a bit different from a typical RPG. It's more like an adventure game focused on character growth. There aren't any monster battles in the field until much later. Instead, progress is made through classroom battles to level up.

It starts simple, with tutorial fights like "Main character vs. slime," then moves on to "Main character vs. three bandits," and later "Main character vs. mixed-party teams." As time goes on, classmates become NPC party members—Ran is one of them.

Meanwhile, Blaze explores the school, handling incidents and quests that pop up. Rewards help buy gear from the school store, and sometimes quests even grant equipment directly.

Through these quests, Blaze gets closer to the girls, recruiting them as party members. That sometimes leads to romantic moments.

 That's basically how it goes.

 "Someone help her up!"

"Not only did the chair break and fall, but you also stepped through the floor!"

"How bad is this classroom's floor?"

 Chaos ruled.

In Z Class, there aren't real lessons or level gains. No quests linked to Z Class exist in the original Game, so events like these are rare—and seriously, the floor collapsing? That's just way too broken for such a low-level, weak class.

Since then, Ran and I have often been called by Ms. Lina to help with small troubles around school—like a "School Trouble Resolution Squad." These little events don't offer clear rewards like in the Game, but they're a nice break from boredom.

 "What's up, Mobu?"

Ran looked up from her textbooks, worry in her eyes. The day was warm and sunny, but Z Class's room never got any light. Still, Ran's golden hair caught what little sun filtered in, shining softly.

 "This classroom's really falling apart..."

Z Class uses old, hand-me-down desks and furniture from other classes. The floor hasn't been repaired, and sometimes rainwater leaks from the ceiling. No wonder it's rotting away.

Only when you think about it do you realize this room is in the school's northwestern corner. It never gets sunlight and is always damp, like a forgotten corner. It's basically the isolation class. This isn't even in the Game.

From a Game perspective, I don't even know my level or stats. I haven't fought anyone, so maybe I'm still level one. I might have leveled up a little from minor quests like the stable job, but there's no fanfare when leveling up here. Honestly, I can't tell. And of course, I can't see Ran's stats either.

Maybe it's because I'm not a player but a character in the story. In the Game, characters don't think, "I'm level 12, need 23 points to level up, better grind poison swamp for weak monsters." They can't see status screens anyway.

 "T-Teacher, the floor collapsed."

 No response.

As usual, the old man was face down, sleeping. How could he still be asleep after all that noise? I hope he's not dead. "No response. He looks like a corpse," that's the vibe.

 "Teacher."

 "Zzz..."

 He snored on.

 "Teacher!"

 Someone shook him.

 "W-what is it?"

He finally woke up. The old man had a thick Kaiser-style mustache and a proud beard, but he was bald and drooling, looking more like a spirit of a teru teru bozu than a dignified teacher.

"Teacher, the classroom floor has collapsed."

 "I see. Understood."

 He slumped back down.

 "Zzz."

 "Um... Teacher."

After shaking him again, he finally sat up with a big yawn.

 "The floor collapsed."

 "I already heard."

The student whose chair gave out stood there, confused. He pointed to an empty seat.

"Move over there. It's free—someone dropped out recently."

He pointed to the seat by the window.

"Even though this room faces north, it should be warmer by the window. The floor there shouldn't be rotten."

 "Y-yes."

The classroom grew awkward, silence hanging heavy in the air.

"What's up? You want it fixed or not?" the teacher asked, his tone flat.

 No one answered.

"Alright then, hands up if you want it fixed," he said, scanning the room.

The room stayed quiet for a moment, then about fifteen students raised their hands. Out of roughly twenty, that was most of the class. I raised my hand too, alongside Ran. The hole in the wall was pretty big, and if Ran accidentally fell, it could be dangerous.

"Okay," the teacher nodded, "The majority wants it fixed."

 "No, it's approved," I said.

"Tch... You noticed that, huh?" He sighed, rubbing his bald head. "This old man's lost all his energy."

I rolled my eyes. Even if this was Z Class, I'm not some idiot.

The teacher—no one really knew his name. In the original game, he didn't exist, and since Z Class is outside the game's story, it made sense. Everyone just called him "Teacher," and other teachers called him "Senior." I once asked Ms. Lina about him. She just said, "No one knows his real name." Apparently, he had been here longer than anyone else. Maybe he forgot his own name, or maybe he was losing his mind. That's why he was stuck with Z Class.

"So, for the afternoon, let's do maintenance," he said.

 "Maintenance?" the class murmured, confused.

"You'll go to the custodian's room and workshop. Bring tools and materials," he said.

"Wait, we're the ones fixing it?" someone asked.

 "Of course. It's your classroom."

"Then maybe we don't need to fix it," another said.

He looked around the room, eyes wide and sharp.

"Weren't you the ones who wanted it fixed?" he asked.

"But isn't this the school's job? Why do we have to do it?" someone grumbled.

Most looked lost. I guessed it was because many of these kids were nobles or rich kids who'd just go back home after school. They probably thought manual work was for peasants.

The teacher sighed and cracked his neck with a loud pop, then patted his shiny head.

"Didn't you all come here to become adventurers?" he said.

 No one answered.

"If anyone doesn't want to be an adventurer, raise your hand."

Still, no one moved. Honestly, I didn't want to be an adventurer either, but I kept quiet. I just wanted to live peacefully with Ran, hidden away in the corner of this world.

"Once you become adventurers, you'll have to handle everything yourself. Gear repairs, fixing armor, all of it. Back when I was a rookie—"

"I'll do that when the time comes," someone interrupted.

The old man was about to launch into a long story, but a sharp voice cut him off.

"This is a school. We're here to study, not to be workers."

 "Do you really believe that?"

 "Yes, of course."

The teacher smiled, amused by their confidence.

"Hey, Mobu," he suddenly called my name.

I tensed. Wait, he actually remembers my name? Since I joined, he hadn't called anyone by name. Maybe he forgot them all, like his own.
