Volume 1 Chapter 2 The Main Heroine Fell in Love With Me, a Mob Character

"I guess this is it, Mobu..."

Ran was kneeling, gently pressing handfuls of dirt over the small grave. She turned around, looking up at me with red eyes.

"That's enough, Ran. Come on, stand up."

 "Thanks."

I helped her to her feet.

"Demons are merciless. They burn everything... even the bodies."

 "Yeah."

Their magic fire was so intense that not even bones remained. We had gathered what few ashes we could and buried them together as makeshift graves for the villagers.

 "Let's pray."

 "Yeah."

Ran closed her eyes and leaned a little closer. She murmured a quiet prayer. I followed, silently wishing for the souls of the departed to find peace in the afterlife. Honestly, I didn't feel much for the villagers. I had only just reincarnated into this world, after all. But Mobu—me—was raised here as an orphan. She must have felt something. So, I prayed on her behalf.

In the original game, Ran becomes a powerful magician. But right now, she hasn't awakened. If she had, she might've used requiem magic to release a blessing from the souls.

 "...I think that's enough."

A voice came from behind. Blaze stood there, arms crossed.

"We should head for the Royal Adventurer Academy. Our parents... the villagers... someone has to avenge them."

He sounded impatient, like he wanted to be anywhere but here.

I looked at him. He didn't seem sad. Not even a tear. But maybe that's just how things worked in the game. If characters stayed in the village grieving for a year, the story wouldn't move forward.

"Go ahead if you want. Ran and I will go separately."

 "...Don't say that."

 Blaze frowned.

 "We're childhood friends, aren't we?"

No, we're not. That's just Mobu's role in the game. I've only known you for a few hours.

 "What should we do, Mobu?"

Ran reached for my hand and looked up. I was taller than her now.

"Let's check the old warehouse on the edge of the village. There should be food and supplies. After that, we'll figure things out."

 "Okay!"

 Ran's expression brightened.

 "Mobu, you're always so reliable."

"Why do you keep relying on me, Ran? You're supposed to be the hero."

In the game, Ran is the main heroine of the harem. She follows the protagonist, not the side character. I wasn't even supposed to survive this far.

 "But Mobu..."

 She looked up, eyes shining.

"You saved my life. If it weren't for you, I'd be dead."

"That was just coincidence. If I hadn't gone out looking for mushrooms, it might've been someone else."

But the truth is, in the game's story, no one else was there. Ran survived on her own.

"By the way, Blaze, why are you still hanging around? Weren't you eager to head out earlier?"

He had barely helped with the burial. Just hovered around, making excuses.

"I just... wanted to say goodbye properly," he muttered.

Sure. He just didn't want Ran leaving with me.

 "That's enough mourning, Blaze."

 "...Yeah. You're right, Ran."

Blaze let out a sigh. Even Ran was cold with him now.

"Then I'll go on ahead to the academy. You two can catch up later. Even if it's just you and Mobu."

And with that, Blaze turned and walked off quickly, trying to save face. Maybe he was embarrassed. Rejected by Ran and unwilling to admit it.

I felt a little sorry for him. But we had to survive. Unlike Blaze, Ran and I had nothing. We couldn't afford pride.

Ran watched silently as Blaze disappeared into the smoke. When he was gone, she looked up at me.

"...Let's get started. We need to figure out how to live, just the two of us."

 "Yeah. You're right."

 "...I'm a little scared."

She moved closer. I put my arm gently around her shoulder.

 "M-Mobu..."

She looked down, face faintly flushed.

"I'll protect you, Ran. So don't worry."

 "...Okay."

She rested her hand on my chest and leaned her head against me.

 "I'm counting on you, Mobu."

 "Leave it to me."

Truthfully, I didn't know what would happen next. But I'd played this game three times. That knowledge had to count for something. I had no intention of charging off to fight Demon King. That was Blaze's story. He could go save the world.

As for me? I just wanted to live a peaceful life in the corner of this game world.

I'd been reborn at fifteen, no longer a broke, overworked corporate drone. This was my second chance—to live freely, to experience the things I never could before.

Ran, the main heroine, was already growing close to me. That alone made this life better than the last.

Even in the game, Ran was earnest, dependable, always by the protagonist's side. In tough times, she would be there. And when the hero needed comfort, she was soft, kind... and always his.

She was the community favorite for a reason.

This time, she would be part of my story.

 "Leave it to me, Ran."

 I repeated it softly.

"Let's live happily in this world, together."

 "...Mobu."

Ran closed her eyes, a peaceful smile on her lips.

Notes:

• Ran - Female. An orphan and a close friend of Mobu. She has long, dark hair and a gentle appearance. Ran is kind and trusting, often relying on Mobu for guidance. She survives the demon attack by hiding in the secret base with Mobu.

• Blaze - Male. The protagonist of the game, born into the wealthy Rosinore family. He has blond hair and a heroic appearance. Blaze is kind and lacks arrogance despite his status. He is destined to become a hero and defeat the Demon King. His relationship with Mobu and Ran is complex, as they are not part of the main story.
