Volume 5 Chapter 27 History Told On The Deck
Zethar can't do anything about Lucia, but he's a dragon who's lived over a thousand years. Since he spends most of his time in the 'Cross Palace,' a place where the dead gather, he knows a lot of things.
There might be secrets he can't share, but he still has plenty of interesting stories. Or maybe it's his friends—or rather, the troublemakers he knows—who have those stories.
"To think a descendant of Apollyon is guarding such a ridiculous princess. The world must be ending."
Zethar said when he saw Ivan step onto the deck.
"Eh!?"
Lucia was shocked.
"You're the descendant of that plump, blonde beauty from the 'Myriad Legion's base'?"
"When Lucia says it, it doesn't sound like a big deal. Strange."
"It's just your imagination."
Lucia looked astonished, while Zethar and Deus sighed.
When Lucia's around, everyone gets caught up in her pace and energy.
She disrupts everything and creates her own world—there's no stopping it now.
"I'm the descendant of that military nation?"
Ivan asked.
"Yes. It's a country founded over 2,200 years ago, uniting the four surrounding nations at the time. Haven't you heard of it?"
"Well... my father studied magic tools from before 2,000 years ago, so it's probably related."
"I see..."
Generally, 2,000 years ago is when the 'Five Divine Gods' intervened in the world.
Before and after that, the world's structure was clearly different.
"What kind of items are there from over 2,000 years ago?"
"In my father's room, there was... well, one notable thing was a magic tool for dissecting monsters."
"Eh!? Monsters... don't they drop gold coins or items when defeated? Why would there be a tool like that?"
"──Before 'that time,' when you defeated monsters, their corpses just stayed as they were."
"Oh... How does Deus know this?"
"I know all the knowledge my master possesses."
"I see, Mr. Horace's knowledge, huh?"
Lucia said, convinced.
Honestly, the fact that she's convinced already means she sees Horace as something non-human, but it's probably fine not to mention it.
"Come to think of it, Horace started studying history after that day 12 years ago. Sometimes he looked at me strangely, so maybe he predicted I was a descendant of that country."
"Hmm? Is there some obvious feature, Mr. Ivan?"
Lucia tilted her head, which makes sense. No matter what history books say, if you don't understand human features, the conversation ends with, "Oh, something like that happened in the past."
It must be because Ivan had some distinguishing feature.
"Of course. The unique magic Ivan has was developed by Clim and engraved into his genes."
"What did you say about me?"
"Hmm? What kind of magic is it?"
"Simply put, it's the ability to 'maximize the quality of objects others have discarded or no longer find useful, and use them.'"
"So, it's like recycling trash. That's why he got the title 'Soul-Singing Adventurer,' singing the souls of things others throw away."
"I see! That's what it was!"
Titles are given based on a person's actions.
But often, only the title becomes well-known. Lucia knew Ivan's title but not its meaning.
"Because of that, the descendant of that country is now an SS-rank Adventurer and a bodyguard for the princess. It makes you think."
"...Well, even so, I can't do anything about it."
"Ah, that's true."
Zethar nodded.
"Well then, we're about to enter the 'inside' of the sea. The conditions will worsen soon. Lucia, hold on tight inside the ship."
"Understood!"
"A ship this size—they can do a backflip on it. Be really careful."
"A backflip!? That's dangerous!"
Saying that, Lucia ran inside the ship.
"...Ha, I should also watch out so I don't get injured."
Ivan said, looking tired. Taking care of Lucia means exactly that.
He also entered the ship.
"So, why did you tell Ivan at this timing?"
Deus asked Zethar.
"Huh? Oh... wouldn't it be cruel if I didn't talk?"
"Well, yes. Or rather, the reason Horace 'made a strange expression' is because of that 'cruel circumstance.'"
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know either."
Nousa and Ellie's expressions clouded.
"It's not something to say here yet. But... yeah. What kind of fate will ride on my shoulders, or that there's a possibility of it. That's something you should know. That's all."
"When Horace accomplishes what he wants, he'll appear. That's all."
It's not the time to talk about it.
All they can say is that inconvenience to humans is related to current actions and will almost certainly influence the future. And if a 'long-lived existence' is involved, time won't resolve it—only postpone it.
Ivan isn't someone who should be overlooked. There's a 'history' he must walk someday.
That's all there is.
"Well, perhaps that's why Horace also became involved in the history Ivan is connected to, so they teamed up."
"I wonder, huh? Heh."
Zethar and Deus know something. Those two, who understand the history of the 'Cross Palace,' a gathering of messengers and sealed ones, are filled with things they normally wouldn't see.
"Come to think of it, 'Cross Palace' was created by the sealing god, right? 2,000 years ago."
"That's right."
"Then why is Clim, who exists 2,200 years ago, here?"
"I don't know either. I asked Clim... but she said Horace couldn't be told about it."
"Premature... perhaps."
Their sighs vanished into the sea.
