Volume 3 Chapter 23 The New Town Wall Completion II

"This is the last one! [Stone Wall]!"

Cain casts a spell by placing his hand on the ground. Two tall pillars rise on either side of the gate. These will become watchtowers to guard the entrance.

"Sir Cain, thank you for your hard work. With this, the town gate is almost finished."

Barvish looks up at the gate, now shaped as planned, and mumbles to himself.

"Once the Mason guild workers finish the outside, it'll be done. It looks really cool, doesn't it?"

Cain replies, comparing the current gate to the final design in his mind.

"Sir Cain, thank you for your hard work. It seems we'll finish on time, thanks to you."

The Head of the Maintenance Bureau thanks Cain as he approaches.

"Ah, Head of the Maintenance Bureau, thank you for your hard work too. But for now, the first gate will stay open."

Cain asks, looking at the first gate across the dry moat.

"Yes, it'll stay open until next month. That's when dwarves from Drein will come to install the drawbridge mechanism. The second gate is ready, so our defense is fine."

"If I remember right, the second gate uses Big Trent, provided by the Mason guild from Sanroze and the Adventurers' Guild, correct?"

 Cain asks Barvish.

"Yes, it's key for defense. I think Sir Luke ordered it directly."

 Barvish answers, recalling the details.

"Big Trent is a rare monster, isn't it?"

Cain asks Barvish, trying to remember what he knows about monsters.

"Yes, it's not common around here, as Sir Randolph said. Sir Luke must have planned this a long time ago."

 "Huh, I see."

Cain notices the second gate's color looks slightly uneven up close.

"But, was it the 'tile' that Sir Cain suggested? It's very good. Regular stone walls would be too easy to climb. And if we kept it as [Stone Wall], it would feel a bit plain. Ah, sorry. I shouldn't have said that, since Sir Cain helped save costs and labor."

The Head of the Maintenance Bureau apologizes sincerely.

"Don't worry about it. It's true, after all. The gate is the face of Sanroze, so I wanted it to look impressive. It worked out perfectly."

 Cain quickly dismisses the apology.

"Now I can finally start working on the sewer construction."

Cain says, making a small fist pump.

"The sewer is built under the road, right? But why under the road?"

The Head of the Guard tilts his head slightly, asking the question.

"Sewers are built underground. If they're not under the road, they might interfere with foundations when digging for redevelopment. Plus, if they're too deep, they can't drain into the river."

Cain explains, drawing a picture on the ground.

"It's not as simple as just digging. When I first heard about it, I thought we could dig under houses."

Barvish mumbles, looking at Cain's drawing.

"In that case, we can't build the sewer for the old city until the new town is ready. It'll take a while before the new town is finished..."

The Head of the Guard mumbles, looking at the empty lot beyond the gate.

"It's fine, it's fine. We'll build the main roads before the houses, so we can make the sewer beneath them in advance!"

 Cain declares confidently.

 ""As expected of Sir Cain!""

Barvish and the Head of the Maintenance Bureau cheer together.

(Actually, I only figured this out last night...)

Cain watches the two excited people and smirks.
