Volume 1 Chapter 31 Genderbend Female Knight, Blushing
"Heh, so you got treated and fell in love, huh?"
"I-I'm not that kind of simple woman!"
Roberta shouted, her face bright red as Eleonora teased her. Eleonora just grinned and continued,
"Even so, you'll go see him again to thank him, right? He introduced himself, treated you, and even touched your feet with his bare hands."
In the Middle Ages, showing or touching bare feet was considered shameful unless it was among family. If done in public, it was seen as an insult.
"That's..."
"Isn't it great? It might be fate, you know? With your education, you could even become a merchant's bride."
Eleonora tore off a hard piece of bread, which made a clacking sound, and dipped it into the salty soup. Meanwhile, Roberta poked at her salad with a dissatisfied expression.
"Even if you suddenly talk about marriage..."
"Well, that's my excitement getting the better of me. Sorry, sorry."
Roberta sighed at Eleonora's apology and drank her water.
"Besides, if you're looking for a partner, it's the young lady."
"Roberta."
Eleonora, addressed by her name, spoke in a gentle yet cold voice,
"It's about the Kamitafira family. You, a commoner, shouldn't meddle."
"I overstepped, please forgive me..."
"Ah, the legitimate successor is Amerigo. This is a decision as the acting head—it will not be shaken."
Roberta understood the meaning behind the words her brothers, father, uncles, and grandfather always spoke at such times.
*[If Lady/Mrs. Eleonora and Sir Amerigo were reversed], surely they would live without any anxiety.*
The safety protected by the strong is a gamble for commoners, no matter how much gold and silver they offer.
If the lord were like that, the people would be safe just by fulfilling their duties.
Eleonora has no problem—she already has a track record. Amerigo is young and has no achievements, which is unsettling. Eleonora will be his guardian for 10 years, but how will he grow...?
"If you're uneasy, Roberta can use this connection to escape to the royal capital."
"Such a way of saying it."
"Are you annoyed? But the fact is, the neighboring region has a history of aggression. It may look peaceful, but the winds of war still blow in the provinces."
Then, it would be better to settle down and live comfortably in the royal capital, which has decided to stay at peace.
If she can marry into a family that earns enough not to struggle in life, that would be good. At least in this era, that's the best choice for women.
"Eventually, the country might become unraveled. It would be better to have a house with money to run away."
"Um, what do you mean by that?"
"What, I don't know what will happen to the next Kingdom of Ashreach. Moving to neighboring Loriengita might be fine."
Implicitly, it's expressed that the current Crown Prince might cause the country to split, but Roberta didn't understand this.
She laughed off his suspicious glance.
"More than that, here's some money. Go buy some new clothes. Or maybe earrings or a necklace?"
"I can't indulge in such luxury when it's not a festival!"
Eleonora laughed again, saying that such behavior makes her popular with merchants.
Despite everything, she liked this simple village girl, which is why she bought her various things and let her spend her days freely.
If she was unaware that this girl would fall in love, she thought the dull everyday life could also be comforted, and laughed a little at her own somewhat sleazy thoughts.
"Enough! If you're going to be mean like that, I won't cook anymore!"
"Good grief, I like the meals Roberta makes. I think I'll stop here for today."
They could call each other good master and servant, but because of that, Eleonora hurried around, and Roberta agonized—though neither of them knew the true meaning of this.
Nor did they know that, in the end, it would become a benefit for the Grand Duke's daughter, Vittoria.
