Volume 3 Chapter 33 Sewer Construction IX
Tony and his friends were told to make a slime their familiar within a week. At the same time, Cain and his group went to the Maintenance Bureau.
They went there to check the plan for paving the roads in the new town with cobblestones.
"Sir Cain, thank you for coming all this way."
The Head of the Maintenance Bureau welcomed Cain and his group.
"Sorry for the trouble. I just wanted to confirm the plan for paving the roads in the new town with cobblestones."
Cain explained why they were there to the Head of the Maintenance Bureau.
"Paving the roads in the new town with cobblestones? I thought that was scheduled for tomorrow and the day after."
The Head of the Maintenance Bureau replied while looking at the plan on the table.
"Actually, we'd like to do it in 4 stages. Is that okay?"
"In 4 stages? That should be fine, but can you tell us why?"
The Head of the Maintenance Bureau asked a question.
"Well, we need to prepare for the ongoing sewer construction, so we thought it would be better to pave the roads in parts."
Cain used the excuse he and Barvish had just come up with.
"I see. It won't affect the construction schedule, so it's fine..."
The Head of the Maintenance Bureau looked a bit unsure but approved Cain's request.
After leaving the Maintenance Bureau, Cain and his group went back to the mansion. They decided to stay inside for the rest of the day. They said goodbye to Barvish and the others and returned to their rooms.
"Haa──, if it were now, the road paving would be done in one day──. But I have to wait a bit longer. Maybe once Lord Luke grows a little more, he'll lift the restrictions?"
Cain thought about what happened today and complained a bit to himself.
"Well, since I have time, I'll work on turning [One Way]'s magic into a magic circle. How many should I make? I think I'll need at least 5,000."
He looked at the notes from last night and talked to himself.
Then Cain thought about how [One Way]'s magic should work.
"Hmm, to stop the sewer smell and slimes from getting out, I'll make it so only light can come out. If only light comes out, people outside can see inside. But nothing, like living things or their remains, can go from outside to inside. This way, maybe the sewer won't be used for bad things by mistake?"
Cain wrote his ideas on a sheepskin scroll. He turned them into a proposal. Even when working alone, mistakes can happen, so Luke and Randolph will check it for him this time.
(Phew, done. In my past life, I made proposals like this many times. But my boss always rejected them... I wonder if these will be useful.)
He looked over the finished proposal again and remembered some sad times.
"Sir Cain, dinner is ready," someone said, knocking on his door.
"Yes, I'm coming now."
Cain answered and went to the dining hall with the proposal to give to Luke at dinner.
Luke and Lydia weren't there yet, so Cain was the first to arrive. He asked a maid, and it seemed their meeting was taking longer than usual.
"I wonder what's for dinner today?"
Cain rubbed his stomach and waited for Luke and the others to arrive.
"Honestly, why did it turn out like that? We spent so much time checking it..."
Luke, looking upset, entered the dining hall. He stopped when he saw Cain.
"Ah, sorry. Sorry for the trouble during dinner, Cain. Forget about it."
Luke said this as he sat down. When he did, the maids brought the food. Tonight's dinner was hamburg steak with a fried egg on top. Luke, Lydia, and Cain enjoyed the delicious meal to relax after a long day.
