Volume 3 Chapter 37 Sewer Construction XIII
After talking with Randolph and Cain, Luke decided the [one-way] magic filter would stop 'living things', 'dead bodies of living things', and 'metal'. Cain then spent about a week making many magic circles and planned to connect the toilets and pipes to the sewer system.
"Finally, I can start copying the magic circle. If Tony and the others can control the slimes as helpers, we'll almost be done."
Cain said this a bit loudly while checking his notes in his room.
"The magic circle for the [one-way] magic should work both ways—from outside to inside and inside to outside at the same time."
It was already bedtime, but Cain kept thinking about the magic circle he wanted to make and couldn't sleep.
Later, Cain made several versions of the magic circle. By the time he noticed, it was getting light outside.
"It's been a while since I stayed up all night. But if I go to the dining hall like this, it'll be bad... I'll sleep a little until someone wakes me up."
Cain got into bed and fell asleep.
* * *
"Sir Cain, Sir Cain. Could you please wake up soon?"
The maid softly called to wake him.
"Ugh, did I sleep too much?"
"It's almost lunchtime. You looked very tired, so the madam told me to let you rest."
"Yeah, thanks. I slept well and feel better now."
Cain smiled and thanked her.
"Now, Sir Cain. Lady Lydia is waiting for you in the dining hall. Please come after changing."
"Huh?" Cain felt a drop of sweat on his cheek, even though it wasn't hot.
After changing, Cain rushed to the dining hall. He fixed his clothes in front of the door, knocked, and said, "It's Cain, may I come in?" before entering.
In the dining hall, Lydia was sitting at her usual place, drinking tea with a nice smell.
"Oh, Cain, good morning. Did you sleep well?"
"Yes, thanks to Mother Lydia, I slept very well."
Cain answered, noticing his voice was shaking.
"That's good. So, can you tell me why you stayed up all night?"
Lydia looked at Cain with a kind smile.
"I'm sorry, Mother Lydia."
Cain bowed his head low, almost touching the ground.
"Hehehe, it's okay. I'm not mad, but I trust you, so promise not to overwork again, okay?"
Cain felt Lydia's words in every part of his body.
"Y-yes. I won't do it again..."
Cain answered without lifting his head even a little.
"I'm happy, Cain. But since you forget things, a small punishment is needed. Let's take a bath together tonight, okay?"
"Eh? That is..."
"Answer, C-a-i-n?"
"Yes, Mother Lydia!"
That night, Cain took a bath with Lydia. He left the bathhouse with a red face. The servants who saw him asked, "Are you okay?" Cain quickly went back to his room, saying, "The water was a bit too hot," and left in a hurry.
After that, Cain never stayed up all night until he grew up.
