Volume 3 Chapter 60 Grandmother's Request VII
On the first day of building the bathhouse, Cain thought maybe he should slow down a bit. But when everyone cheered loudly, he felt proud and kept going. He planned to just work on the outside, but he finished the inside too.
The floor and walls got big tiles for easy cleaning. The bathtub got tiny 2cm x 2cm tiles. He also put in drainage pipes and connected them to the sewage system—all in one day.
Cain turned around, smiling proudly, almost done except for the roof and windows. But the craftsmen, who were cheering before, looked shocked. "Oops, I went too far," Cain thought. He quickly tried to fix it.
"Maybe I did too much! Heh. I just wanted to surprise Grandmother..."
Cain mumbled, looking down, then ran to his room. He jumped into bed, buried his face in the pillow, and shouted.
He ignored everyone calling him and ran straight to his room. After closing the door, he dove into bed, buried his face in the pillow, and shouted again.
"I did ittttttt! I've been so frustrated with cobblestone work, and it's been a while since I got so much praise!"
Later, Barvish and the others came to Cain's room, knocked, and asked worriedly,
"Sir Cain, are you there?"
They entered and went to the bed.
"Sir Cain, it's okay. Everyone was surprised at first, but they're praising you now."
Lala said gently.
"Yeah, Sir Cain. Everyone was just a little surprised."
Gardy added kindly.
"...But Sir Cain, if you don't get up soon, I'll kick you out!"
Barvish said, a bit louder.
"And you two are too soft on Sir Cain. You can't protect him like that."
Barvish scolded Lala and Gardy.
"Hey! Why are you scolding them for worrying about me?"
Cain sprang out of bed and snapped at Barvish, who had just scolded Lala and the others.
He couldn't stand the thought of someone else getting in trouble because of him.
"Huh, if you're this energetic, you're fine. Let's calm down. Lala, can you make tea?"
Barvish glanced at the suddenly-awake Cain, let out a small sigh, then gave Lala instructions in a relieved tone.
Cain looked confused, then sat on the sofa. Barvish sat next to him, Gardy sat across, and Lala brought tea and sat beside Gardy.
"Sir Cain, sorry for raising my voice."
"Uh, yeah."
"But remember, even though you're not an adult yet, you're a noble. Don't run away when you make a mistake."
Barvish looked Cain in the eye.
"Uh, yeah."
"You want to help people and make them smile, right? But would anyone admire someone who runs from failure? Would other nobles trust you?"
"...No one would admire me, and I'd lose trust."
"Right! Sir Cain is a great lord worth serving forever."
"Really?"
"Yes, it's rare for someone your age to accept scolding. I see now it's hard to hold you back."
"Is that a good thing?"
Cain pouts a little.
"No, sorry if I upset you. I meant it as a compliment. Let your talent shine instead of holding back."
Gardy and Lala nodded.
"So... I can do whatever I want? Yay! Now, with this..."
As Cain dreamed, Barvish said seriously,
"Freedom isn't irresponsibility, Sir Cain. Don't mix them up. And always tell us before doing anything."
"Thanks! I will!" Cain smiled.
Everything was fine with Barvish and the others, but Margrave Shield gave them a long, serious talk. Barvish's group looked more tired than Cain's, with dark circles under their eyes, like in a comic.
(Maybe I should slow down for everyone's sake?)
Cain thought.
