Volume 1 Chapter 61 Genderbend Female Knight, Becomes A Levee

"Is there really no other way?"

One of the Loriengita soldiers grumbled, looking truly fed up.

The narrow mountain path twisted and turned, making the walk miserable.

"His Majesty is here too, so stop complaining."

"But seriously, we could've just taken a ship. From Luzutu's port, the Tyria Peninsula is right there."

"Idiot, do you even know how long it takes to prepare a ship for ten thousand soldiers? This is about avenging His Highness the Prince. We need to quickly take down that woman, Ele or whatever her name is."

As they trudged along, staring at the same unchanging scenery, casual chatter broke out.

The Loriengita soldiers were getting distracted, feeling too confident. They thought the location was bad for a large army, but they wouldn't be attacked.

Even if they were, they had a biased, unfounded sense of safety, thinking, "With so many of us, it won't be me who dies."

But then, the conditions for the fire and explosion magic circle on the ground were met. Once enough soldiers passed, flames shot up, followed by an explosion hitting the soldiers and supply carts.

Soldiers caught in the flames screamed for help, grabbing those in front and behind them. From a distance, it looked like they were tumbling off the cliff.

Even those not directly hit were thrown into chaos. Some were injured or trampled by fleeing horses.

 "What happened?!"

"It's an ambush! They probably set up the magic circle beforehand."

"With only one path, it was easy for them to prepare..."

Emperor Raimont regretted rushing, but there was no turning back now.

Most of all, he couldn't give up avenging his son.

"Watch your step as we move forward! If anything seems off, let me know!"

From then on, their advance looked comical to outsiders. Everyone moved slowly, like turtles, eyes wide as they scanned the ground for traps.

Sometimes, a soldier would jump in surprise at a harmless stone.

Eleonora's psychological ambush worked. The Loriengita army's pace slowed, but eventually, under their commanders' orders, they sped up again, thinking the danger had passed.

* * *

"Damn it! How could they do something so cowardly!"

"If I find them, I'll make them pay. I'll cut them down slowly until they beg for mercy───"

 Explosion, flames, and death.

It was like the earlier scene replaying, but with something extra.

No one noticed the small stones falling from above, but if they turned into rocks, it would be a different story.

What surprised Eleonora most was how frightened the Loriengita soldiers were. A rock fell near the center, splitting the army in two, blocking their planned advance.

 "Your Majesty! Are you safe!?"

"I'm fine! I'll handle this opening. You all take care of the Ashreach army first!"

The emperor Raimont's rear unit quickly moved to clear the rocks.

Meanwhile, the vanguard started moving slowly again, but morale had dropped.

Beyond that, there were no more magic circles or falling rocks. The vanguard, now calmer, saw makeshift barricades with reverse spikes and bags, a slope leading to the enemy camp, and a catapult piled with similar bags.

"What kind of formation is this? It's not a field battle or a siege, just half-hearted."

But it was at the exit of a narrow mountain pass, impossible to bypass.

They couldn't move forward without breaking through this strange position.

Since the emperor had ordered it, the commander had to obey and annihilate the Ashreach army.

The catapult clunked and launched something.

Bracing for a rock, they were shocked by what fell instead.

With a squelch, the rotting corpse of a soldier under Prince Louis, from the previous battle, landed on the Loriengita vanguard.

The stench of death and maggots spread, sparking panic.

"Be quiet! We'll show Ashreach, who commits such atrocities, what it means to face the dead, in honor of His Highness Prince Louis! Charge!"

The foot soldiers ran, turning away from the corpses.

A half-hearted barricade, awkwardly placed in the street, was piled with bags, likely due to a lack of wood.

But they could easily climb over the bags instead.
