Volume 5 Chapter 11 The Magic Coin

Volume 5 Chapter 11 The Magic Coin

"What is this? It's a coin, right? It has a faint color and a vague sliminess that doesn't seem like metal or glass."

"Yes. It's harmless to hold in your hand."

When I took a closer look at what Kagami-san handed me, I saw a design of a vessel and someone's profile carved on the surface.

I can't really tell what material it's made of.

But what I do know is that it has a faint magic power.

Kanami, who was peering at the coin from the side, murmured.

"For a magic tool, it's quite peculiar."

 "Is that so?"

Sorry, I don't have much knowledge about magic tools, so I don't know the details. If Kanami, the expert, says so, then it must be true.

Kagami-san's dark blue left eye glowed, and the pupil contracted mechanically. The "Shayka Eyes" were analyzing the coin.

"Normally, magic tools are activated through the user's magic power, but I can't see that in this one. Rather than a magic tool, it's more like the magic itself..."

 "Sorry, I don't really understand."

Our senses are quite different. This kind of sensation often happens when talking to someone from a scientific background.

"Right now, this coin is circulating in various places. Not just among magicians, but also among ordinary people."

 "What could be the purpose?"

Certainly, I can feel the magic power, but if it doesn't cause any harm other than that, it's a bit mysterious.

One possibility is that they are trying to activate some large-scale magic by distributing the coins, or it could be a decoy. Either way, they are going through the trouble of preparing for something. There must be some kind of purpose.

 Kagami-san shook her head.

"We still don't know what they are aiming for, or who is distributing them. We can speculate about various things, but we lack decisive evidence."

"It feels unsettling. But if it's just about collecting the coins, there are many ways to do it, right?"

Even though they are the Anti-Demon Special Forces, a public organization, they have the advantage of being able to use the power of the country. Other magic society can't imitate that. If it's just about collecting the coins, there's no need to mobilize magicians. Regular government officials can handle it.

However, Kagami-san denied that idea after collecting the coin from my hand.

"But it's not that simple. After all, this coin is the 'Magic Coin' that fascinates its holder."

 "Magic Coin?"

"That's what it's called on the streets. It's said to grant any wish of its owner."

 "That's ridiculous."

Even when I was in Asteris, I've never heard of such a ridiculous magical effect. It's something that only exists in fiction.

 Kanami too nodded beside me.

While shining a light on the coin, Kagami-san slowly rotated it.

"Saying that it grants any wish is an exaggeration. There are things it can do and things it can't. But it definitely has a similar ability."

"Are you sure? Have you confirmed it?"

I can't help but feel a serious aura from her. She must be really serious about it.

"Of course, I've confirmed it. I've tested it myself."

Wow, Kagami-san is brave. Anyone would hesitate to test such a suspicious coin.

 "What did you wish for?"

Lisha, who has been left out until now, asked. I'm curious too.

Kagami-san nodded with a serious expression.

"I wished for a high income, tall height, and a kind partner who can do household chores."

 "That was your test?"

Is it just my imagination, or can I feel the seriousness in her words? She must be really serious about it.

"Of course, it was a test. In the end, I couldn't find a partner, though."

"Then, did you make another wish?"

"I casually wished for 'a happy day.'"

Hmm, that's a request that feels dark in its own way... Her job must be tough.

 "And did something happy happen?"

"Surprisingly, many things happened. I could leave work on time, I won a prize from a vending machine, I could leave work on time again. I got a bonus when I bought dinner at a store, a colleague brought me a souvenir, and I could leave work on time again."

 "I see..."

Ugh, she can't leave work on time like that. Anti-Demon Special Forces, is it necessary for even the internal affairs to be so secretive just because it's a shadow department?

"Well, I've never seen a vending machine jackpot in my life. It was a once-in-a-lifetime miracle."

A miracle, huh? Now that I think about it, I've never won either.

"And then, this is the coin I used."

Kagami-san took out a new bag and took out the coin from there.

At first glance, it looked no different from the coin earlier, but upon closer inspection, the color seemed dull. It no longer had a unique sliminess and didn't shine even when exposed to light.

It really seems like some kind of magic has been activated.

 But it does grant wishes.

"Indeed, with this, it seems difficult to collect."

 "Why is that?"

Lisha asked curiously. It may be hard for her to understand, but no one can live a completely pure and innocent life. It's a coin that grants wishes, and once someone obtains it, they won't easily let go of it.

If we were to suggest collecting it, everyone would hide it so that it couldn't be found.

 That would be quite troublesome.

"A coin that grants wishes, no one wants to let go of it. Lisha, you probably have wishes you want to come true too, right?"

"Oh, no, as long as I have Yuusuke-san and Kanami-san... Oh, I mean, I want to end the God-Demon War!"

 "Oh, I see."

It's embarrassing to be told that with such an innocent face.

"But well, I might want my cooking skills to improve..."

Lisha muttered, and looked like she had just stuffed her mouth full of sugar.

"Well, that's the case. That's why we're currently in charge of collecting the coins."

"Is it possible that demons are involved?"

"As a possibility. The magic society is definitely involved, but we can't say for sure that demons are not involved."

 "..."

I look at the coin again.

If we only consider the effect, it wouldn't be strange to say it's demon magic. But what should I say, I don't really feel much of a demon vibe from this coin. Well, maybe there is? Yeah, I don't really know.

Kagami-san looked at me like that and twisted her lips as if it was difficult to say.

 "So, I have one request."

 "What is it?"

Even though she said that, given the flow of the conversation, I can pretty much guess what she's going to ask.

But the words conveyed by Kagami-san were slightly different from what I expected.

"I'm sorry, but I want you to help me collect the coins. It seems like there are a lot circulating at Seijo University for some reason."

 ——Yes?
