Volume 2 Chapter 11 I Think It's Starting To Take Some Shape
Well, it was a bit difficult since the morning, but it seems like I somehow succeeded.
And now, during the lunch break, we're continuing with the volleyball passing practice as planned for the sports tournament.
I borrowed a volleyball and practiced with me, Namiki-san, and Nakagaito as team members.
Then Nakagaito said to us,
"We don't have much time until the tournament, so for you two, let's go with an underhand serve instead of a floater serve."
"When you say underhand serve, it's a serve where you swing your arm up from below and hit the ball, right?"
I said that, and Nakagaito nodded.
"Yes, that's right. The underhand serve raises the ball in a curved manner, so it doesn't have much power. But even beginners find it difficult to get caught in the net or hit it out of bounds, so there are fewer mistakes and it's more dependable."
Namiki-san said with relief,
"In that case, it seems like we'll somehow manage."
Nakagaito nodded and said,
"Okay, let's practice with one person serving and the other receiving and returning to the opponent. I will teach you how to do an underhand serve, so let's take turns serving and receiving."
We agreed with a nod.
"Got it, so I will serve first, and Namiki-san will receive."
"Yes, got it."
Namiki-san and I stood about 15 meters apart, with Nakagaito standing near me.
"Now, for the underhand serve, first face the opponent directly, slightly bend your knees, and get ready."
I positioned myself as instructed.
"Like this?"
"Yes, exactly. Then, take a step forward with your left foot, pull your right arm back, and drop the ball held in your left hand in front of your right arm. Shift your weight towards the front, then swing your arm to scoop up the ball from below its center, close to your wrist, and push it out towards the opponent with your whole body."
"Got it."
I followed Nakagaito's instructions, dropping the ball in front of my right arm and swinging my arm up to serve.
While watching the ball I hit, I see it gently curve towards Namiki-san. When she returns the ball to me, I realize that this way of hitting is easier to control.
"Oh, I get it now. This way is much easier."
I say this, and Nakagaito chuckles.
"Well, it's a serve that even beginners can do easily."
"But it's definitely better than not doing well at all."
Now it's Namiki-san's turn to serve.
Once again, Nakagaito goes to Namiki-san's side to teach her how to serve.
"Um, like this?"
"Yes, exactly. Now, try serving for real."
"Alright, here I go."
"Good luck!"
With a popping sound, the served ball lands near me, so I receive it and return it to Namiki-san.
"Yeah, I did it well!"
Namiki-san says with a smile, and it feels great to be able to do it well.
"Sports and studying are similar because both require starting over from the basics if you struggle. It's a way to quickly improve and become skilled in the activity."
When I mentioned this, Nakagaito laughed once more with a smug expression.
"Yeah, that's right."
"I totally understand that feeling."
"Yeah, it was really useful."
When it comes to spikes and blocks, it can be challenging to practice without a net on the court.
