Volume 2 Chapter 44 I'm Glad That Fumi-Chan's Mood Has Improved
After the festival, Kokonoe-san and I walked together to Funabashi's east side. We said goodbye and went home.
"See you at school on Monday."
I told Kokonoe-san, and she smiled and said,
"Today was fun. Invite me again, please."
I spent the last two days at Fumi-chan's high school festival. When smart people organize a festival, it's impressive. That's what I think.
On the second day, I planned to watch a play. Fumi-chan was busy with her class's casino on the first day, so I went with Kokonoe-san, who likes plays. But that made Fumi-chan a little upset.
June is almost over, and I want to start studying for the final exams soon.
Because last time Fumi-chan taught me and I got a good score, I want her to teach me again this time. But it might be hard because things are different now.
To make Fumi-chan teach me, I need to make her happy somehow.
Today, when we had lunch, she only ordered dim sums. So maybe she's in a good mood?
If that's the case, maybe I'll try making something sweet and tasty with what I have at home.
Luckily, my mom likes making bread and cakes, so we have the ingredients at home.
I might even try making checkerboard icebox cookies.
The ingredients are unsalted butter, sugar, eggs, cake flour, vanilla essence, and cocoa powder.
First, mix unsalted butter and sugar in a bowl until it becomes pale. Then, add beaten eggs and mix well, and divide the mixture in half.
Add vanilla essence to one half and mix well. Add cake flour and mix until it becomes smooth. Similarly, sift in cake flour and cocoa powder into the other half, and mix until smooth to complete the dough.
Once you finish making the dough, cover each part with plastic wrap. Shape it into a 3cm square rod and put it in the fridge for about 1 hour. When it gets firm, cut each part into 4 equal pieces. Arrange the vanilla and cocoa dough alternately, shape them into rods, and let them rest in the fridge for another 30 minutes.
Before baking, preheat the oven to 170°C. Cut the dough into 8mm width, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake for 15 minutes until they turn a light brown color. That's it!
After tasting one, I found it baked well and tastes good.
I quickly messaged Fumi-chan.
[Fumi-chan, great job at the two-day cultural festival. I made cookies, want to come over?"
After a bit, I got a reply.
[Yeah, thanks. I'll change and be there soon.]
[Got it.]
After a while, Fumi-chan, now wearing a cute gray knee-length dress, showed up.
"Thanks for making the effort to bake cookies."
"No problem at all. It seems like you were quite tired, Fumi-chan. Well, come in and relax."
"Um, sorry to bother you."
I showed Fumi-chan to the main room.
Then, I asked Fumi-chan,
"Would you like some cold chocolate milk?"
"Yeah, that sounds good. Cookies and chocolate milk are nice together, huh?"
I mix cocoa powder with sugar, add a bit of cold milk, heat it gently, and then slowly mix in more milk until the cocoa powder dissolves. We stop heating just before it starts boiling, pour it over ice, and let it cool down. That makes yummy cold chocolate milk.
"Here you are."
"Thanks."
Fumi-chan takes a sip of the chocolate milk and says,
"It's sweet and tasty. I can tell you tried hard."
I nod and reply,
"Yeah, a little effort can make a big difference in flavor. And drinks from bakeries are always delicious, right?"
When I mention that, Fumi-chan's face turns serious.
"It's normal for food and drinks to taste good... right. It's important for the drinks we buy to be yummy. Well then, I guess I didn't do so well at the casino during the festival."
"Hmm? I didn't really notice anything bothering me that much."
I said that, then Fumi-chan sighed and said,
"But, you know, some people got mad about the cheating."
"Oh yeah, I remember that. Sorry, maybe I shouldn't have said the casino was fun."
Fumi-chan shook her head at my words.
"No, it's just that performances at festivals usually lean towards amusement park stuff. So, it's actually good we didn't have that kind of show."
"I see, it's quite tricky, huh?"
"Yeah, it's tough when others are involved."
And while looking straight into my eyes, Fumi-chan asked,
"By the way, why did you bring that girl to the festival today?"
"Hm, Kokonoe-san? Today, I planned to watch the play, and she likes watching plays too. Plus, she's from the US and just came back to Japan in May, so she's still getting used to everything."
I said that, and Fumi-chan nodded and said,
"I understand. I think that's a good thing about Atchan... But I'm also a new student, so I hope you can be kinder to me too."
"Ah, yeah, sorry. In that case, how about we go to the Keisei Rose Garden in Yachiyo next Saturday? In June, there should still be roses blooming, even spring roses.
