Volume 2 Chapter 47 It Seems Difficult To Make Your Own Cosplay Costumes By Yourself
The day after today is the last day for the home economics club before our big tests. I want to finish making my hot pants by tomorrow, but can I do it?
The next day after school, me, Saikachi-san, and Shinonome-san went to the home economics practice room's clothing room.
"If I don't finish my pants today, I can't do club stuff until after the tests."
I said, and Shinonome-san asked,
"So, will Hata-pippi's pants be done today?"
I smiled and said,
"If nothing goes wrong, it should be okay. It's my first time making clothes, so I'm not sure how long each step will take."
Saikachi-san agreed, "It's your first time making something all by yourself, so it's normal not to know all the details."
I nodded and said,
"It's hard when you're just starting and don't know what to do, but it's also interesting, right?"
Saikachi-san agreed with what I said.
"Yes, I'm having a lot of fun being part of the Home Economics Club and doing different things."
While we were talking, we reached the clothing room in the Home Economics practice room.
Today, Osaragi-san and Utashiro-san were already there, and they had already set up the sewing machine and everything.
"I'm sorry for keeping you both prepared all the time."
Osaragi-san smiled and replied,
"No, it's because everyone seems to be enjoying themselves that we put effort into preparing."
Utashiro-san added,
"At one point, I thought the club might disband. It's lively now, and I'm happy."
I nodded in agreement with what they said.
"I understand. Even though there are members who aren't very active, it would be difficult if there were only two actual members. Well then, shall we continue?"
I took some pants out of the student's bag. These pants were special because the front and back parts were sewn together. I put them on the sewing machine.
Then, I sewed the sides of the pants together. This made the pants into a tube shape.
I used a special machine called an overlock machine to sew the sides. This made the pants look much better. Shinonome-san watched me and said,
"Wow, it's really starting to look good."
"Yeah."
After sewing the sides, I needed to sew the part between the legs. I used the overlock machine again and sewed it with a 1cm allowance.
"This part is a bit tricky."
First, I put pins in the middle of the leg seams. Then, I put pins at the bottom and a few more in between. After that, I sewed them together.
"Sewing around the curved parts was difficult, but I managed."
Finally, I used the overlock machine to sew the hem so that it wouldn't fray. I also attached the belt fabric and put an elastic cord through it. And that's how the pants were finished.
This part wasn't too hard because I used ironing techniques I learned from making drawstring bags. This made the folds and seams look neat and tidy.
"Whew, somehow I managed to finish it."
But when I picked up the finished product, it was much smaller than I expected.
No matter how I look at it, it turned out to be half-pants that don't fit me at all.
"Oh, could it be that the pattern I bought to make this was for girls? Normally, people would think about the size of the finished waist before buying a pattern... I made a mistake."
After seeing me like that, Shinonome-san shrugged and said,
"Well, well, Hata-pippi, you made some strange mistakes. Even if the pants don't fit your waist, what are you going to do?"
Feeling down because of her comment, I still replied.
Actually, Shinonome-san had a point. If the pants are a bit too big, I can trim the sides and make the waist smaller, but it's difficult to make something narrow wider.
When it comes to store-bought pants, if you want to increase the waist size, you can let out the seam allowance and make it slightly larger. Especially for custom-made items, they often have generous seam allowances, and apparently, you can make it larger by about 5cm.
However, this type of pants wasn't designed with extra seam allowance. Instead of using elastic, it was made to fit tightly around the waist, so it's impossible to make it larger.
"Well, it would be bad to throw it away. So, what should I do?"
When Shinonome-san heard me, she smiled and said,
"Okay, I'll take those pants. They'll be good to wear inside when it gets hot and humid, don't you think?"
After listening to Shinonome-san, I thought for a moment and replied,
"They might be a little big for you, Shinonome-san. But if you tighten them with the elastic, they should be okay. I'd really appreciate it if you could take them."
I gave the black cotton pants to Shinonome-san.
After taking them, Shinonome-san looked at the waist size carefully and said,
"Okay, I'll take them. But can you make the waist smaller if it's too big?"
With a small smile at Shinonome-san's request, I agreed,
"If they're too big, I'll adjust the width. Well, with final exams and all, I might not be able to do it right away even if you ask, though."
When I said that, Shinonome-san smiled sneakily and said,
"Well, that's unavoidable. I can wait a little if it's just for a short time."
Looking at Saikachi-san, who was making a tote bag, I saw that it was already finished and it looked quite well-done, even though it was messy.
"Saikachi-san, you're really impressive. The final product is excellent, just as good as tote bags you can buy in stores."
When I said that, Saikachi-san blushed a little and said,
"It's not like that. But I'm happy it turned out well."
Then, Shinonome-san, holding the pants I made, tilted her head and said,
"Hata-kun's pants look pretty good too. But why Sayuri-chan?"
I answered with a wry smile,
"Oh, when I bought the pattern, I didn't properly check the waist size. After finishing it, I realized it's a size I can't wear."
When I said that, Saikachi-san sighed softly and said.
"Hata-kun, sometimes you forget things, right? It's okay for me, but you didn't want to waste it, so ypu gave it to Sayuri-chan."
I nodded and said,
"Yeah, that's true."
Saikachi-san sighed softly and said,
"Sayuri-chan is very smart, isn't she?"
Shinonome-san said with a wry smile,
"If Eri-chan wants one too, why not ask Hata-pippi to make it? We can even go together to buy the fabric."
I smiled awkwardly at Shinonome-san's words and said,
"I think it would be better to just buy a pair of pants. It would look better. But I do want to try making another pair as practice, so maybe it's not a bad idea. If Saikachi-san is okay with it. Also, if we can find the fabric at Tsunaduma or Larala Port, I'd prefer to buy it there."
I said that, and Saikachi-san smiled and replied.
"Ah, yes. I also want to create something, so let's go see fabrics and designs."
"Yeah, we'll probably continue our activities after our exams finish, so let's go then."
When I suggested that, Saikachi-san agreed with a smile.
"Yes, let's do that."
So, we decided that after our exams finish, Saikachi-san and I would go to Yuzawaya to see fabrics and designs.
While we were discussing that, Osaragi-san joined in.
"Well, it seems like everyone is finished, so let's end the day here."
I agreed.
"Yes, it's already quite late."
And so, the activities of the home economics club before our exams concluded smoothly.
However, making my own cosplay costume by myself seems difficult, apart from making drawstring bags and tote bags.
It might be a good idea to find someone with experience in that area or maybe talk to my mom.
