Chapter 25 Weapons That Choose The Owner (Part One)

 Kiridani Jun looked puzzled.

"Why? Even if Morimura can't move, having Tsubasa stay here wouldn't be a problem."

Kondo Shuichi also expressed his opposition.

"That's right. Considering that there may be monsters ahead, it would be safer for Morimura-kun to stay here. I think it's better for his sake too."

What they say is certainly logical.

But I have a reason why I absolutely want to take Morimura with me.

I have no choice but to talk about it here.

"In the treasure room we're about to go to, there are weapons with magical attributes hidden. Among them, Morimura is the best at wielding the magician's staff with magical abilities."

Indeed, Morimura Manabu is the necessary offensive mage for the upcoming adventure.

Without him, we cannot conquer the quests ahead.

 "Is Morimura a magician?"

Kiridani Jun exclaimed in astonishment. Everyone, including Morimura himself, had their mouths wide open.

"In that case, why don't we retrieve that staff and give it to Morimura-kun?"

Kondo Shuichi said as if it were obvious, but I shook my head.

"The magic weapon ahead can only be possessed by the first person who touches it. So if someone else touches it, it can't belong to Morimura later. It can't be used by anyone else."

Everyone fell silent. Finally, I spoke up.

"Do you understand? Then we'll leave in a little while. Thanks to the healing spring, Morimura's wounds should heal quickly."

No one opposed my opinion anymore. However, Kiridani Jun continued to gaze at me with a persistent light.

After a 15-minute break, we started walking through the marshland again. Morimura no longer needed to be carried, but we still took turns supporting each other. As we walk, there were dead bodies of monsters scattered throughout the swamp. Kondo Shuichi looked at one of them.

"Those monsters, were they defeated by the adventurers who went ahead?"

 "I think so."

"So that means we're able to take it easy, right?"

"Yeah, that's right. We have injured people here. We need to have this advantage."

 "Hey, what's that?"

When Kondo Shuichi said that, I had already seen the same thing. A dark navy-colored something was lying a little away from the road. Everyone saw the same thing. And we surely had the same impression.

As we got closer, it became clear. There was no mistake. It was the boys' school uniform from our school. I stopped Shimura from rushing towards it.

"It's better to be cautious. It might be a trap. If it's a Frogman, they sometimes use one of their captures as bait."

I told everyone, "Wait here," and Shimura and I stepped into the marsh with tall grass growing.

There was no doubt that the body lying on the muddy water was human.

I carefully lifted the body and turned it face up.

Both Shimura and I tensed up.

 "Kuriyama..."

The one who had died was Kuriyama, who was in the same class as us. He was one of the delinquents in our school.

"If Kuriyama is here, does that mean someone from our class or a mixed team of adventurers from this world went ahead?"

Shimura said that and looked at me.

"Yeah, that could be it. Or maybe it's a combination of our class and adventurers from this world."

"But if it's our classmates, they wouldn't understand the language, right? How did they get here?"

"Many adventurers carry spare translators. And didn't the gatekeeper say, 'The Goblin tablet had a hidden passage to an undiscovered underground dungeon'? Maybe someone picked it up when we were attacked by goblins."

I moved away from Kuriyama's corpse and tried to return to the road.

"Aren't we going to bury Kuriyama's body?"

Shimura chased after me and asked.

"Where? This is a swamp area. There's no suitable place to bury. Plus, it's a waste of time to search for a place to carry and bury a body."

I answered like that, and Shimura also said sadly, "Yeah."

So, we returned to the road and informed everyone of what I confirmed.

"If Kuriyama's body is here, I wonder if Iigaki and the others have gone ahead?"

Kondo Shuichi said, and Kiridani Jun agreed.

"That's definitely true. They're all yankees. In that case, wouldn't it be better to go faster? Iigaki is greedy and might monopolize all the weapons."

 (That could definitely be said...)

I remembered Iigaki's forceful and rough attitude. He's not a bad guy, but you never know what he'll do if things don't go his way. He lacks self-control.

 "Yeah, let's hurry ahead."

 I hurried ahead.

After passing through the marshland, I saw a stone room. It had strange carvings that couldn't be associated with any gods or demons. Moreover, those carvings seemed to be devouring each other.

 "These carvings are creepy."

Shimura muttered quietly. I opened the sturdy stone door. Inside, there were sporadic pale lights, confirming it was indeed a huge stone room. Unidentified statues of gods or demons were placed all over. As soon as everyone entered the room, the door closed behind us.

 "Are we trapped?"

In response to Kiridani Jun's words, I remained silent and drew my sword. Inspired by my actions, everyone else prepared their weapons. I took a step forward, towards the center of the room.

"Where are the weapons? All I see are strange statues."

It was at that moment when Kiridani Jun spoke. As if there was an earthquake, the entire floor began to sink downwards.

 "What's happening?"

 "What is this?"

 "What's going on?"

While listening to everyone's voices, I prepared myself for the next impending situation. As the room descended, a square hole started to open on one side. It was a passageway.

"Everyone, be careful! Let's go towards that passageway!"

Upon hearing my shout, everyone's faces turned pale.

 "What is that passageway?"

From the other side of the passageway, loud noises and screams could be heard. And then, someone could be seen running towards us.

 "Help meeeee!"

The one who appeared was Fukui, the guy who always picks on the quiet ones in the class. Just before the loop, he always messes with me, trying to make himself look good by putting others down.

But now, Fukui, who used to be so full of himself in the classroom, had a face drenched in tears, contorted in fear. When Fukui saw our faces, he clung to Kiridani Jun, the man he relied on the most.

"Jun, help me, please help me!"

 "What's wrong, Fukui?"

"The stone statues, the monster stone statues, they're attacking!"

 "What!?"

 I quietly told them.

"If that's what you need help with, then you came to the wrong person. Look around. It's full of those stone statues."

Everyone looked around in shock. As if it were a signal, the stone statues around us began to move with an eerie creaking sound.

 "Eep"

Fukui let out another scream and clung to Kiridani Jun's waist.

"You idiot! Don't cling to me! I can't move!"

A single statue loomed closer to the panicked Kiridani Jun. It had a bird's head with long talons. The talons swung down towards Kiridani.

 "Ah!"

Kiridani, unable to move due to Fukui clinging to him, let out a scream. Just in the nick of time, my sword crushed the statue's arm and head. The statue crumbled like a clay sculpture, making a rattling sound. In that moment, I grabbed Fukui by the collar and pulled him away from Kiridani Jun.

"Everyone, move forward in this corridor. The statues aren't fast! Stay calm, they are enemies we can defeat easily!"
