Chapter 41 Crisis of Sakurakand (Part Two)

Chapter 41 Crisis Of Sakurakand (Part Two)

After finishing the meal at The Witch of the Valley's house, we left there.

Everyone seemed reluctant to finish the meal.

Morimura muttered, "Can I at least get three apples for myself?"

I would like to do the same if I could, but that apple tree wouldn't allow it.

After that, we spent two days returning to the town of Sakurakand.

Upon arriving in town, we first stopped by the Adventurers' Guild to hand over the defensive barrier magic stone and report the completion of the quest.

At the guild, we had to wait for about an hour for the magic stone to be appraised to see if it was genuine.

Once it was identified as genuine, a reward of 30,000 gil was paid.

In Japanese yen, that's roughly about 400,000 yen, maybe?

Usually, an errand quest pays about 1,000 gil (around 13,000 yen), but since it had been accumulated for 50 years, it had become a considerable amount of money.

The adventurer who was watching seemed unimpressed.

"Even though there are no strong monsters near this town anymore, is it really worth paying that much money for defensive barrier magic stones?"

They grumbled with a touch of dissatisfaction and skepticism mixed in.

(You'll figure it out soon enough)

I thought to myself as I accepted only 7,000 gil in cash, with the rest held by the guild. This way, the guild would register the deposit on my adventurer's card, allowing me to withdraw it from another guild.

Of course, the reward would be split among us. We also decided to each hold 1,000 gil in cash. In past loops, there were people who would say, "I should have worked more!" and sometimes I had to hold the entire amount, but that kind of thing causes trouble. Sharing equally among all participating members is the best in any case.

When we returned to the inn, Gina asked, "So, seven of you are back?" but didn't say anything more. She knew that when they left, there were nine people, including Fukui and Nemoto Reiko. However, the other six besides me have no memory of Fukui. It's because she knows this that she doesn't say anything more. And that night, I gathered everyone in the inn's diner.

"As night falls three days from now, this town will be attacked by monsters."

All six of them look at me with surprised expressions. Morimura speaks.

"Is that something that happened in a past loop?"

 "Yes."

 "Is it certain to happen?"

"As far as I know, there hasn't been a time it didn't happen. So, I'm certain it will happen."

 Kondo speaks up.

"We should have the defensive magic stones we received from the Witch of the Valley. Shouldn't they protect this town?"

"Indeed, the defensive magic stones can significantly reduce the damage. However, it's not foolproof. A group of armed lizardmen and orcs will rush into the heart of the town."

 "How many enemies are there?"

Midoritani Tsubasa asks. In an instant, she starts planning strategies, as if she were a natural-born warrior.

"Between 30 and 50 will invade. It's an impossible number for us to fight alone."

 "So what do we do?"

Tsubasa's eyes showed a confidence that I had the answer.

"We'll ask for help from other adventurers."

However, Kondo shook his head at that.

"But based on today's situation, other adventurers have said that powerful monsters don't come to this town. With that in mind, even if we were to say, 'Help us, a powerful monster is coming,' I don't think they'd budge, do you?"

 I nodded.

"That's right. So, tomorrow, we'll go to the guild and pick a fight."

 ""A fight?""

Morimura and Tsubasa both exclaimed at the same time. I nodded and explained the outline.

"Tomorrow, we'll loudly declare to the adventurers at the guild that 'There are no adventurers in this town who can beat us.' If they're hot-blooded types, they'll definitely get involved. Then, we'll specify a location three days from now before sundown, and ask them to gather there armed."

Tsubasa seemed to understand and nodded.

"Ah, I see. So if we're armed and prepared, adventurers can easily fight against monsters, right?"

"That's right. The scariest thing is being caught off guard without any preparation or weapons. But if we're ready to fight, it just means that the opponents change from us to the monsters, and we can fight immediately."

Alice said with a worried expression.

"If we provoke them like that, won't it turn into a fight right then and there?"

"Don't worry. Fighting within the guild is strictly prohibited. If it looks like it's going to turn into a violent situation, the guild staff or bouncers will intervene."

"But who would start that fight? I can only use healing magic, so it's impossible for me."

"That role belongs to me, Morimura, and Tsubasa. Alice, during battles, I want you to treat the injured here at the inn."

After saying that, I looked at Mizuno Kaede.

"Kaede's abilities are unknown, but if you can use defensive magic, I want you to protect this inn. It's reassuring for us to have a place to escape to in case of emergency."

In my experience, I've never seen defensive magic in the previous loops. Therefore, I don't know specifically what it is, and I can't judge how much Kaede can use it. Naturally, Mizuno Kaede also looked anxious.

 "Can I... do it?"

"It's not about whether you can or can't, you have to do it. Our lives and the lives of our companions are at stake."

I deliberately added firmness to my words. Kaede, looking anxious, nodded silently. I decided to alleviate her anxiety a little.

"Kaede won't participate in the battle. Just stay hidden in this inn and use defensive magic. That's all."

 "Okay... if that's all..."

 She finally answered, looking relieved.

"I don't have to fight either, right?"

 Aoki Runa asked to confirm.

"Yeah, Aoki-san, follow the instructions of the inn's Gina and the owner Martha and stay hidden. Pushing yourself will only lead to overall danger. There should be no problem if you're with Kaede."

Aoki Runa looked happy and relaxed.

 "What should I do then?"

 Kondo asked me this question.

"Kondo's role is a bit risky, but I want you to act as a messenger. First, if a monster attacks, you'll tell the people in town. Then, you'll inform me and Morimura about the situation. Well, at first, you'll work with Tsubasa. Can you stay with me?"

I said that and looked at Tsubasa and Morimura.

"Tsubasa, I want you to find a high place where you can see the whole city. Tsubasa's bow is the best for long-range attacks. Also, if there's a place where you might be overwhelmed by monsters, please let him know. He's heading there."

 "Okay," Tsubasa said.

"Morimura is our main force. To protect this inn, please wait in the square in front of the inn. The monsters will eventually come to this central plaza, where there is a magic stone that acts as a defensive barrier. No matter which direction they come from, magic can deal a huge blow to the enemy."

Morimura responded with a strong will, "I'll give it a try."

"As a strategy, first Tsubasa locates the enemy and takes a shot. Just doing this makes it difficult for the enemy to advance. Then, I will engage in close combat with other adventurers. It would be great if we could crush them here, but if we miss or the adventurers can't hold them off, Morimura will counter with magic in this square."

"Are there other magic users in the guild besides me?"

 Morimura confirmed.

"Yes, that's right. So we can respond to any direction the monsters come from. If the monsters can't enter the square, we can even attack from behind."

"You all seem to be having quite an interesting conversation."

Martha, the inn's landlady, said as she approached. She is also Gina's mother, and despite being close to forty, she still looks youthful and beautiful.

 "Martha-san, did you overhear us?"

She nodded in response to my question.

"If it's a secret, you should speak a little more quietly. Well, it's fine for now since there are no other customers but you two."

"But Martha-san, you expect that monsters will attack in three days, right?"

Martha-san tilted her head slightly and then began to speak,

"Well, yes. My fortune-telling also predicts that a disaster will come to this town in three days. It's not certain that it's monsters, though."

"In that case, Martha-san, how about you tell everyone in this town about the crisis? You are trusted, aren't you?"

Martha-san shook her head at Alice's suggestion.

"I can't influence others so much based on fortune-telling alone. Besides, there are adventurers who don't believe in fortune-telling."

"I see, we will take care of that. It's enough if Martha-san can shelter three girls and the people who come seeking refuge."

"Alright. Besides the basement, we have a wine cellar for emergencies. You can hide there and be safe."

Martha-san smiled as she looked around at the girls' faces. I feel relieved when I see her like that. If Martha-san, who is good at fortune-telling, says it's okay, then this place is probably safe. Even in past loops, which, I have never brought back the defensive barrier magic stone, this inn has never been damaged.
