Volume 1 Chapter 68 Flashback - Allen And Ellis, Part One

"Allen, should we head back to the village around here today?"

"Yeah, but just a little longer... It seems like we can gather more herbs than usual."

"Recently, the village head also said not to stay outside for too long because monsters have been appearing nearby, right?"

"...I understand, Ellis. Let's go home."

With his neatly combed golden hair and a well-defined face, the boy named Allen reluctantly placed a large basket on the ground upon the request of his childhood friend, Ellis, who had red hair. Then, they started walking towards the village where they lived, right in front of their eyes.

About five years ago, in the forest near the village, Allen and Ellis, who were not yet adventurers, were collecting herbs as they always did.

Herbs could be processed into healing ointments that would quickly heal minor scratches. They were often used as ingredients for potions by alchemists in town, so they could be sold to traveling merchants for a few copper coins.

In most villages, people earned money by selling these items along with crops and animal fur obtained from hunting.

Allen and Ellis had made it a daily routine to venture into the forest and gather various wild plants once their work in the village was done.

Upon returning to the village, the two noticed unfamiliar people conversing with the village head, Galan, in the square.

These four men and women were wearing armor and cloaks made of metal and leather, and they were armed with swords and spears.

Intrigued by their appearance, Allen and Ellis approached them.

 "Galan-san, is something happening?"

"Oh, Allen and Ellis. These are adventurers who have come to fulfill the request for defeating monsters that we submitted to the Adventurer's Guild."

Allen and Ellis had heard from the adults in the village that goblins and forest wolves had been seen lurking near the village.

The village head had entrusted a familiar merchant to make the request to the Adventurer's Guild a few days ago.

"Are these children from this village?"

"Yes, their names are Allen, and Ellis. They've only just become adults, but they're doing well."

When asked by the adventurers, the village head introduced them. Both of them bowed politely to the adventurers.

At that moment, a man from the adventurer party, dressed in a long black cloak, stared intently at the two of them, then suddenly exclaimed, "What!?" in a greatly surprised voice,

 "W-What is it?"

"Level 90 to 80?! I can't believe there are children like that in this village!"

"Level 90?! Unbelievable... Is that really true?"

The adventurers were also incredibly surprised to hear his words.

One of the male magicians from the adventurer party visiting the village possessed the rare [Appraisal] skill.

It was by casually checking Allen and Ellis's status that their abilities were revealed.

In a very ordinary village, their lives were about to change dramatically because of a single word spoken by the magician.

"Wow! These kids have such amazing powers!"

Although the two of them had heard of concepts like Level Cap and skills, they didn't have much interest in the details, so they didn't have that knowledge. Therefore, even when they were told how amazing they were, they just stood there looking bewildered.

"Allen, do you understand what's going on?"

"I don't know, I'm just as confused as you are..."

"You may not know, having grown up in this village, but having a Level Cap of 90 or 80 means you have the potential to become a Hero (Eiyuu)."

A bearded man, who seemed to be the leader of an adventurer party, clad in a full suit of iron armor, explained to them.

According to the man, those with a Level Cap of 70 or higher were all accomplished Heroes (Eiyuu). Moreover, Allen's unprecedented Level Cap of 90 and Ellis's Level Cap of 80 meant they had the potential to reach the highest rank of adventurer, the S-Rank.

If their Level Cap was over 50, there was a high possibility of being employed as a knight, even if they weren't adventurers.

"I don't think it would be a bad idea to end your lives peacefully here, but I think it would be a waste to leave both of you without using your abilities. Why don't you think about your future a little?"

The man then resumed his conversation with the village head, saying, "I'm off topic." Allen and Ellis felt bad for interfering and decided to leave.

"Hey, what do you think about what they said earlier, Allen?"

Ellis asked Allen as they walked.

"I don't feel like being suddenly told that I can become a hero. But I don't want to become a knight. I've seen the soldiers who occasionally come to the village grumbling at the tavern."

 "...I might say that."

 Allen then added, "But."

"It might not be a bad idea to become an adventurer. You can earn more money than picking medicinal herbs, and I don't think they'll make you look bad just because you're from a village."

"But I hear that adventurers only do dangerous jobs like fighting monsters. That's why the people from earlier came to the village."

"It seems that my level cap is very rare, so I think I'll be fine if I raise my level. Then...I can recruit friends like those people. That way, I'll be safe. Well, if that happens. It's just a story."

Allen didn't say anything more, but Ellis somehow sensed that he had decided to leave the village.

Ellis had spent his whole life with Allen, like brothers and sisters, so he could understand a lot from Allen's tone and actions.

From that day on, the village was buzzing with talk about Allen and Ellis's abilities.

Their parents were proud of them, and the villagers watched with anticipation and envy, hoping that a hero might be born in their village.

A few days later, the adventurers who were staying in the village reported to the village head, Galan, that they had defeated five E-Rank Forest Wolves, four Goblins, and five D-Rank Orcs in the forest. The mission was successfully completed.

"Well then, I guess we can consider the mission accomplished."

"Yes, I have written that in this document. Thank you very much."

Galan handed a document to the male party leader, which confirmed the completion of the request. The man accepted it, saying "Certainly."

Since the nearest town was about a two-day walk from the village, the adventurers had come on foot without using a carriage.

"Well then, if you'll excuse us. And... make sure you escort the two of them to the town."

 "Yes, thank you very much."

As they were about to leave the village, Allen and Ellis were right behind them.

The two had discussed with their parents and the village head, and decided to become adventurers.

Ellis had always been together with Allen, so she couldn't imagine life without him. And if Allen wanted to do something, she wanted to help him. With that in mind, they decided to become adventurers together.

And so, the two of them set off from the village to become adventurers.
