Volume 1 Chapter 1 The Demon King Is About To Come Back, But..

Hello, this is new work with fantasy genre, I hope you like it...

──It seems like the Demon King is about to come back soon.

I wonder when I heard such a story. Maybe it was when I was still in single digits in age.

Apparently, this Demon King guy comes back every few hundred years and causes all sorts of disasters in the world.

But to me, the monsters that come and devour all the hard work I put into growing crops seem like the real bad guys.

So, the person who is born to counter the Demon King is called 'Brave', a chosen representative of the God. They are said to be the embodiment of justice, helping the weak and defeating evil.

Anyway, I want Brave-san to do something about the village head's idiot son who is always playing pranks. I discovered that he had graffitied on the walls of my house, so I stripped him naked and painted his whole body with paint that is hard to wash off. Then I hung him upside down from a tree.

Well, to be honest, this story is beyond my understanding. I live in such a remote place, so even if they say the world is in danger, I can't really grasp it. What's more important to me is to peacefully grow crops and find a wife to live a calm life.

That's what I had vaguely thought about. But then...

 "I am── a Brave?"

"Yes, that's right. You are the chosen one, the hope of humanity that we have been waiting for── You are a Brave."

──I stood in awe at the scene unfolding before me.

 "The hope of humanity..."

The person muttering in amazement is a young man from the village called Relix. Relix was a youth who was not only good-looking, but also smart and kind-hearted. It's hard not to wonder why such a handsome guy was born in such a remote village.

He was considered the leader of the village's young men and even a potential future village head. The position of village head had always been passed down through generations, but due to the current village head's son being too foolish and Relix being too handsome and talented, it seemed inevitable that things would change. If that idiot who only caused trouble for others became the village head, the village would be destroyed. It would be much better to entrust the village to a promising young person like Relix.

Relix, the candidate for the next village head, was now facing a group of people in the central square of the village.

These people were members of the "Church" who had come from the royal capital.

The church seems to be like a religious group that believes in a 'god' who is in charge of choosing heroes, or at least that's what I've heard. I'm not really into gods or anything, and I don't even remember the church's official name.

There's a church in this village, but the priest looks like an old man who's almost ready for the grave. On the other hand, the people from the church who came from the capital all look like tough and young folks. The man who's talking to Relix at the front is wearing the most decorated clothes among them.

Oh, right, I should introduce myself. I'm(ore) Yukina. I guess if I had to give myself a title, it would be 'Villager No. 1' or something like that. I'm watching the scene where Relix and the church group are facing each other, surrounded by onlookers.

Now, the man from the church continued,

"You should have a birthmark on your right hand."

When the man said this, Relix was startled and looked at his own right hand── the back of it. I had seen it before, and there was indeed a birthmark. After looking at Relix's hand, the man smiled and said.

"That's what they call the 'Stigma,' a mark bestowed upon those chosen by the God. It's the undeniable proof that you are a Brave."

"It's me... the chosen one by the God."

Wow, it feels like I'm witnessing a historic moment, doesn't it?

...Anyway, I should get Relix's autograph later.

Maybe I can sell it later with a catchy phrase like 'Authentic signature by Brave-sama! Commemorative sign of being recognized as a Brave!' If I add some 'premium,' I might be able to sell it for a good price.

And so, I completely thought it was someone else's story until four days later.

On that day, while sweating and doing farm work, I was suddenly called to the village head's house.

...Could it be that I'm being scolded for the incident where I hung that mischievous brat naked?

If I am scolded, I've decided to strip the village head naked and hang him too, so I visited the village head's house.

 "Oh, excuse me."

 "You've come, I've been waiting."

When I opened the door, the village head was the first to greet me. Contrary to my initial expectations, he didn't seem angry, but had a serious expression on his face.

As I was prompted to head inside, I saw a familiar man in the living room. I'm pretty sure he came to this remote village from the royal capital for some reason about four days ago. Was he from the church?

 "...Um, what's going on?"

I couldn't grasp the situation, so I instinctively looked towards the village head, but he just pointed to a chair in front of the man in silence.

Without understanding the situation, I sat in front of the church man for the time being.

 The church man spoke up.

"Nice to meet you... well, you should recognize my face from yesterday. But let me introduce myself again, I'm(watashi) Pain. I've been appointed as a bishop from the church."

I'm not sure how important a bishop is, but it's probably best to act respectfully for now.

 "Um... I'm Yukina."

"I know. I'm the one who called you here today."

"Um... So, what does the church's bishop have to do with me, a mere 'Villager No. 1'? I don't remember being preached to by anyone from the church, unfortunately."

Ah, the village head's face twisted. Inside his mind, he's probably thinking, "You let my(Uchi) son bring great shame upon me!"

I have no guilt whatsoever about that incident. In fact, I was praised by the villagers who had been victims of the mischief. I hope he considers it a small matter that only involved hanging something on a tree.

Putting aside the story of the foolish son, let's focus on the bishop for now.

"At this point, I assume you have some idea about the upcoming discussion."

"No, I have absolutely no clue."

Without any hesitation, I responded honestly, and the bishop froze. Because, well, i truly had no idea. It couldn't be helped.
