Volume 4 Chapter 11 I Heard There Was Some Talk, But...
--It all started with a report from Mikage, who was on patrol.
"Yukina-sama, there are goblins."
"Really?"
Mikage looked serious, and I furrowed my brows a little.
There were many people working around us, but Mikage spoke softly, so no one else heard.
I left the work area with Mikage. Once we reached a quiet spot, I turned to her.
"How many did you see?"
"Two or three. I took care of them right away. I didn't see any bigger groups."
Usually, seeing just a few goblins wouldn't be a big deal. But since the recent big goblin attack, there was no way we could have taken this lightly.
Luckily, I had put Mikage in charge of patrols.
Still, calling this "luck" might be a bit too optimistic.
"How would you like it?"
"If possible, I don't want to stir things up."
"I feel the same way."
Many of the villagers are beginning to recover, but the memories of the village being destroyed by goblins are still very fresh. Some have even lost loved ones.
Even though the reconstruction of the village is in full swing, we don't want to dampen spirits. However, we can't just ignore the situation either.
We need to thoroughly root out the cause once again.
(Gram, what do you think we should do?)
'Yeah, I think we should start by tackling the worst-case scenario first.'
The worst-case scenario... huh.
In that case, the first thing we should do is...
"Let's investigate the cave that was the goblins' nest first."
"But the summoning magic circles that were set up there were destroyed--"
"Just to be sure."
If the goblins Mikage found are just remnants of the ones summoned before, that's one thing. But if they're summoned anew from the magic circles...
If the magic circles are still partly working and summoning monsters, there's a chance the village could be attacked by goblins again in the future.
"If the circles are still working a bit, we should completely destroy them. If we confirm the circles are destroyed, it would ease some of our worries. Either way, it's not a wasted effort."
At least, I feel a bit relieved with fewer worries.
"However, there's a bigger chance it's just a false alarm. You should continue patrolling the area--"
"No, I'll accompany you, Yukina-sama."
Mikage said this and kneeled in front of me.
"In the recent incident, I realized something about myself. I was too focused on immediate things. Even now, I haven't reached the level of thinking like Yukina-sama, and I've been making quick judgments. To change that, I really want to accompany you this time."
I'm usually just a worrier, but since Mikage said this, there's no reason to refuse.
"Well, then let's not waste any time. I will let people know I'm leaving the workshop, so you go explain the situation to Aina and the village head. Let's meet up later at the outskirts of the village."
It's definitely important to inform the village leader about the goblins. And Aina is already in charge of the reconstruction work, so she should know too.
"Got it. See you later."
Watching Mikage leave in a hurry, I went back to the workshop once.
* * *
After a while, I headed to the outskirts of the village.
"So, what do you really think?"
'I don't know. It's hard to say without seeing the situation for myself. There's a chance that the goblin Mikage saw came from somewhere else.'
Goblins are monsters that can appear anywhere if you look for them. Gram's idea might be possible.
'But I believe in your judgment, partner. I don't like the idea of worrying too much about things.'
Feeling a bit better with Gram's agreement, Mikage then arrived from the direction of the village.
"...Did the number following me increase in number?"
Behind Mikage, for some reason, Aina and Kyunei were following.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Yukina-sama."
"We've been waiting, but what about the two people behind you?"
When I pointed it out, Mikage stepped aside to let them pass. Instead, Aina and Kyunei came in front of me and placed their hands on their ample breasts.
"I heard it from Mikage-san. I'm just someone involved in magic, even if just a little. If it's about magic circles, I might be able to help a bit."
Thanks to Gram, I thought there wouldn't be any issues with magic circles, but Aina should have known about it.
"Plus, I'm interested in the summoning circle used in the previous incident."
"Well, that's fine. I'm not exactly a magic expert. If it were just me, there might be some oversight."
I understand that too. Besides, Aina can use attack magic. She'll be reliable when needed.
"So, what about you?"
"I'm the medic."
(Shouldn't that be "s*xy personnel"?)
Kyunei strikes a somewhat seductive pose. The deep cleavage peeking through the white coat is dazzling.
While resisting the temptation to be drawn into the abyss of the metaphorical deep valley, I ask Kyunei.
"How's work going?"
When she straightened her posture, her expression turned serious.
"We're wrapping up the reconstruction work, and the number of injuries has decreased, so it's okay. I've also left healing tools behind, and the village doctor can handle things well enough."
If that's the case, there's nothing special for me to say anymore. As a healer, and even in combat, Kyunei is much more skilled than a 5th rank mercenary.
With everything settled one way or another, it's reassuring in its own way.
"Well, let's hope for the best and head out right away."
Upon hearing my words, the three nodded in agreement.
