Volume 4 Chapter 10 The Reconstruction Work Is Going Well, But...
After mercenaries arrived at the village and joined the revival efforts a few days later.
The reconstruction work was progressing at a faster pace than initially anticipated.
The biggest factor was still Aina's leadership ability.
While progress in the village and at the work sites had been managed somewhat loosely by the elders and supervisors, once Aina took over supervision, the rebuilding of buildings progressed at an astonishing speed.
From clearing debris to planning the order of rebuilding houses and rearranging the work process, Aina managed tasks that were previously done haphazardly, and everything progressed as if all the work was integrated.
"My Lover is Too Amazing"
During a midday break, I'm sitting on a tree stump, biting into a sandwich with meat. Gram leaned nearby.
'Well, she was from the royal family after all. She must have received an exceptional education that commoners like us couldn't even dream of. Still, Aina definitely belongs to the exceptionally talented category.'
Basically, Gram is a bit of a troublemaker, but his opinions about people can be pretty harsh. If he's saying something like that, then Aina must really be something.
'Oh, and Kyunei's presence is surprisingly significant.'
"Yeah, that might be true."
It's not necessarily about Reconstruction. Well, in a way, it kind of is, but not exactly.
Kyunei's job is to heal those who get injured during work or suffer serious injuries during goblin attacks in the village. It's a really important role, but she's not directly involved in the reconstruction work.
However, the people who receive Kyunei's healing act unusually enthusiastic. It's not like Kyunei is doing anything special.
It's just that she smiles and offers words of encouragement during the healing process. That alone boosts the guys' motivation. And they get so pumped up that they end up getting injured again. Then they go back to Kyunei for healing, and the cycle repeats.
'Okay, so there's this lady doctor who's so talented you can tell just by looking at her white coat, right? And if she's the one who's gonna make you feel better, well, guys are gonna work like crazy for that, like horses pulling a carriage.'
"I feel like I'm looking at my past self a bit."
Until I got together with Kyunei, I was working super hard to earn money to buy a pr**titute (that's Kyunei). Safety was important, but I was really focused and working hard in there.
"If Aina is a pro at using people, then Kyunei is like a pro at motivating them, right?"
'Oh, you're good with words, partner. That's exactly it. They might make a weird face if you said that to their faces, though.'
So, Mikage is kind of like a 'professional mercenary.'
Ever since taking my 'orders,' Mikage has been happily patrolling around the village every day. And surprisingly, she hunts down animals she encounters during patrols and brings them back to the village.
As expected, being the second-ranked mercenary sure pays off. She has handled a ton of missions, especially those to take down beasts, and she's really skilled at it. She can quickly butcher and prepare the animals she hunt right in front of the villagers and other mercenaries.
"That wild boar hot pot from yesterday was amazing!"
By the way, the meat in the sandwich I'm eating right now is from the boar Mikage took down and butchered yesterday.
While we're in this village, our food mostly comes from supplies brought in from the royal capital, but it's mostly preserved food. They're only thinking about nutrition, not taste at all.
Thanks to Mikage, though, we get to eat fresh meat, which is a real treat. It really boosts the energy and motivation of the workers.
"Huh? Am I maybe not contributing the most?"
'That's selling yourself short. You might not stand out much, but you're like the powerhouse behind the scenes, making a big contribution, partner. Just think back on the work you've been doing'
Well, imagine you're out there, hauling trees you've just chopped down, thinking you're doing pretty well, until you realize you can't chop them down fast enough. So, reluctantly, you join in on the chopping too, and once you've cut enough, you gather them up and haul them to the processing site.
'It's like doing double the work at double the speed.'
"I was quite surprised to hear that. Sure, the old man's hatchet helps a lot."
The tool I'm using for chopping is this big hatchet made of dragon horn. It can chop through tree trunks thicker than a person's body like butter. Makes the work go a lot faster.
'That old man probably never thought his prized creation would debut in tree chopping.'
"But hey, it's all about using the right tools."
'Still, it's so funny.'
And Gram laughs heartily.
--Gram thinks to himself without saying a word.
(Partner (Yukina) probably doesn't realize that he's a real pro at motivating people.)
In the recent demon attack incident, people were starting to see Yukina differently. Before, s`he was just seen as a "cowardly spearman." But this change was mostly noticed by those who actually saw the projection of his actions in the royal capital. Many mercenaries who were fighting outside the royal capital at that time still had doubts about Yukina's bravery.
Most of the mercenaries who joined the reconstruction work this time were those who had doubts too. Also, it was obvious that if he kept beautiful women nearby, who were seemingly out of reach for just a 4th rank mercenary, he would attract resentment.
However, when they arrived at the village, everyone welcomed Yukina and her companions. He wasn't treated like timid people at all.
Moreover, once the work started, he progressed at a speed that far outstripped both mercenaries and villagers.
This really ignited something in the mercenaries.
――I'll not lose to that Spearman.
The villagers also noticed that the hero who had helped them was working harder than anyone else for their sake.
Feeling inspired, they too rose to the challenge. As a result, everyone's morale improved, and the work speed increased rapidly.
(Partner sure knows how to lead without even realizing it.)
Instead of just words, Yukina attracted people through his actions and example. What's scary is that she does it all without even realizing.
(I can't help but look forward to my partner future.)
With a smack, Gram broke out into a smile.
Gram chuckled at something.
"Why's your laugh so creepy?"
'Why so harsh out of nowhere!?'
And so, each of us gave our all in our respective roles, working diligently on the reconstruction efforts.
