Volume 4 Chapter 6 I'm Offering To Help, But...

Aina finished registering as a mercenary without any problems, and I decided to restart my mercenary work.

Although I've saved up a bit, I still need to build up my reputation as a mercenary. To achieve my short-term goal of becoming a 3rd rank mercenary, I need to take on more jobs.

I have three women who are willing to follow me. While I'm happy about it, it also means I have a big responsibility. I have to work hard to not let them down.

So, as I was about to choose a job right away, I noticed a request that came up when I registered Aina.

The moment I saw it, I decided to take it.

--A few days after processing the request, I apologized to Aina,

"Sorry, Aina. The first request was a tough one."

"It's okay. I actually admire Yukina-san for taking it on, even though you said 'tough'."

"I don't think I deserve that much praise."

We're on the back of a bumpy carriage. We're heading to a village near the royal capital.

Yep, it's that village that got attacked by a huge group of goblins right before the demon invasion.

When the goblins attacked, thanks to us rushing over, the villagers were okay, but their homes and supplies got wrecked. Houses were destroyed, and most of their food was gone.

The kingdom isn't ignoring this mess, but since the demon attack, they've been focused on guarding the royal capital even more. They've got stuff, but not enough people to help out.

That's where the Mercenary Guild comes in.

This time, I took on a job to help rebuild the village destroyed by monsters. The kingdom's covering the supplies, and us mercenaries are handling the transportation, protection, and rebuilding.

The request's rank is 5th. There's not much money or achievement to gain.

At first, I planned to handle this request alone, asking Mikage to take care of Aina. But when I told Aina about my decision for this request, she immediately decided to go along with me.

"Even though I'm just a distant member of the royal family, I can't ignore the plight of the people we should protect, even if I've lost my right to the throne!"

 She was really enthusiastic.

So, Aina also took on this request.

"Mikage, you didn't have to come along, you know?"

"No. Wherever Yukina-sama goes, I'll follow, even if it's through fire and water, even to the ends of hell."

"...I understand your sentiment, but it feels burdensome."

Riding in the carriage together are Mikage and Kyunei. Besides us, several other carriages are carrying supplies and mercenaries along the city road. Mostly, the mercenaries are ranked 5th, and this carriage is the only one carrying ranks 4th and above.

When it comes to Mikage, everything's as usual. Kyunei is tagging along under the guise of being a helper for the guild. There's a lot of physical work in the reconstruction efforts, so they need Healing experts for that time.

People participating in this mission because it's a request from the country, and the guild has nominated some people to ensure the minimum required number. Mostly, it's 5th rank mercenaries who are less experienced and earn less. Then there are some mercenaries who just want to earn steadily.

The country is covering our food and lodging expenses during the mission. So, when you don't have to worry about expenses, this job actually pays quite well.

The participation of three beautiful women, led by Aina, got the mercenaries all excited. They were thrilled, but none of them had any chance with the ladies. Their frustration and jealousy ended up directed at me. However, from what I saw, they were mostly beginners who just started wielding swords yesterday. At best, they were the best fighters in their villages. If they all attacked me at once now, I wouldn't be too worried.

'Partner, you're still as humble as ever, huh? I think it wouldn't hurt for you to evaluate yourself a bit more.'

Well, that's just my nature, okay? I'll leave the accurate analysis up to you, Gram.

As we arrived at the village and began unloading the supplies from the carriage near the entrance, a villager approached us.

"I thought maybe from a distance, but I never imagined it would actually be you guys!"

It seemed like this villager remembered our faces. Unfortunately, I didn't remember theirs, but even when we explained, the villager didn't seem bothered at all.

"Don't worry about it. It's just me remembering you guys. There's no way I could forget the face of the 'Hero-sama' who saved us."

The villagers took my hand and bowed their heads.

"I forgot to thank you back then. If you hadn't come, this village would have been completely destroyed. I'm able to stand here firmly on both legs because of you. Thank you so much."

Seeing the villager expressing gratitude with tears, I scratched my head, unsure how to respond. To me, I just did the job I was assigned.

The other mercenaries noticed the villagers' reactions and glanced over. Their looks were different, not jealousy, but it made me feel a bit uncomfortable.

I wanted to get back to unloading the cargo, but unfortunately, the commotion caused the villagers to gather. They noticed me and started approaching one by one, expressing their gratitude. Soon, almost all the villagers gathered at the village entrance, causing a big crowd.

 "Wow, Yukina-sama is amazing!"

"Isn this the time to be impressed? What exactly are you so impressed by!?"

Mikage's eyes were sparkling, and I reflexively added tsukkomi. Villagers also gather around her to express their gratitude.

Similarly, people flock to Kyunei. During the goblin attack, many owe their lives to her healing abilities. The gratitude towards their savior is strong.

Moreover, both of them are stunningly beautiful. The enthusiasm from the men is overwhelming. The fact that some women are also mixed in there... well, I guess everyone has their own tastes.
