Volume 2 Chapter 19 Intense Battle
The five individuals who emerged from the depths seemed different from the usual small fry I encountered before.
All of them were proudly displaying copper-tier adventurer badges around their necks. They were seasoned adventurers. They could use magic properly, and they were legitimate foes.
"Hey, boy, it's about time you faced some pain...! These guys have been Sword adventurers for years. Some of them are even on the verge of reaching the abnormal realm, close to silver-tier."
As the story goes, it was an even match from here. I rotated my neck, feeling the end of my warm-up, and replied, "Hmm, I see."
Eujary began speaking, his facial muscles twitching.
"...You seem clueless about the difference in strength, so let me enlighten you. The foes you've defeated so far were of iron-tier. No matter how talented of an aspiring adventurer you are, there are multiple opponents equal to or greater than you. Do you understand? You can't win!"
"If it's just one person, right? Too bad, I have allies too."
"Like me."
My surprise attack caught them off guard, and Clay leaped out from the back door where the enemies appeared. Without hesitation, he swiftly swung his sledgehammer. The two agile opponents quickly noticed and attempted to counter with magic.
""Wind Cutter!""
"Quake"
The vibrations from the sledge hammer shattered the wind blades, crushing the two enemies. It was a technique usually used to defeat monsters tougher than humans. The two fell silent together.
"Mission accomplished."
"Wait, you're seriously strong, aren't you?"
"I did say that from the beginning, right? But it all comes down to compatibility. Wind magic is weak against earth, after all."
Frain, emerging from behind Clay, shot a fire arrow amidst Clay's words. The Fire Arrow aimed at the remaining three was blocked by a water magic shield, and a metal magic shield. It melted but did not break the metal magic shield. However, it pierced through dark magic to defeat the user.
"I've also achieved the mission."
"It's tough to find an opening against them."
"What's your problem, huh?"
In Eujary's angry shout, Clay sarcastically replied, "Just doing my job," and Frain covered his ears saying, "Shut up."
Then, Ice and Toxy appeared behind me.
"They're here...!"
"It's them."
It seemed Ice had already prepared something, as she simply said, "Ice Blow." A snowman that had quietly climbed up in front of the water magic shield unleashed a freezing gust.
The water magic shield quickly turned into ice arrows, raining down on the water magician. Covered in ice thorns, the water magician sank helplessly.
"Wha...? Is this a joke...?"
I retorted to Eujary's words.
"Yeah, there's one more left."
"Poison Solid!"
As Toxy's poison bullets hit, the metal magician readied their shield again. However, Toxy's target was always the shield. The shield, now poisoned, corroded and fell apart rapidly. Clay then prepared his fist.
"Quake."
The powerful quake aimed at just one person seems too strong. The carefully controlled vibrating fist hits the metal magician, causing them to sink.
In the room, there are my friends, the fallen enemies, their boss Eujary, and only Frowdus left. Frowdus is quietly sitting in a chair, seemingly unconscious.
Eujary points at Toxy, his finger trembling greatly.
"Oh, oh, oh...!"
"...Long time no see, old loan shark. Remember me? Those five big gold coins, that's what it's about. The payment my father made for my magic alteration. I want it all back."
"Darn it, darn darn darn darn darn! I thought I'd make a fortune by tricking that foolish priest! How did it come to this?! Darn it! Darn it!"
Eujary shouted for a moment. Then, gritting his teeth, he said,
"Darn it, they're the only ones left...! I didn't want to resort to using this hand...! Just keeping them stationed costs money, and if I call them, it'll cost even more! "
Saying that much, Eujary then smirked maliciously. Just like a fox.
"But if I call, it's truly the end. You guys, it'll all be over at once. ―――Kadras! Sandra! Subdue these guys!"
In response to that voice, a strong presence emerged from the depths and behind us. We instinctively jumped back and gathered in the center.
Coming forward was a carefree man. Kadras. He had a silver adventurer's badge with a sword on his chest and carried two swords on his back. There was no mistaking him for the dual-wielding Kadras.
"Hey, old man. I'm just sleeping here and getting paid, so this is my base, you know? ...Hey, this is getting pretty serious."
Meanwhile, coming from the back is a girl with side-tail blonde hair. She looks around the same age as us, but at her chest, there's a copper sword, a silver bow, and a silver torch adventurer's badge swaying.
She must be Sandra. Sandra of the Thunderclap.
"Actually, if it's come to this, you should have called for help sooner. Considering the cost of treating everyone, it would have been much cheaper."
She calmly pointed out Eujary's mistake. She spoke with a serious expression throughout. In response, Eujary looked frustrated.
"I didn't think these brats would come this far...! Just take them down already!"
"Yes."
Sandra speaks with a disinterested and calm tone. I glanced at Sandra warily. Our eyes met.
Sandra said with a serious expression,
"Hmm, quite my type."
"...Huh?"
I'm really at a loss for words. Huh, what? Are you talking to me?
But Sandra continued at her own pace.
"Hehe. It's too funny to have a fateful encounter in a place like this. Eujary, can I back off?"
She said this with a serious expression while laughing. I'm also confused, and Eujary doesn't seem to care about that.
"Huh!? Hey! Why do you think I'm paying money just because you guys are lying around!"
"That's true. It can't be helped. But there's also a possibility of my misunderstanding. I like strong or potentially strong people."
With a snap, electricity crackled around Sandra.
"Fighting to find out is also an option."
We got ready for a fight. Kadras, who never reads the room, said something random.
"Hey, Sandra-chan, what about me? I'm strong and full of potential, right?"
"Kadras doesn't risk his life to challenge the unknown, so it's boring."
"But that level of excitement is totally kill me. Let's calm down and figure this out, okay?"
"Annoying. Fine, I'll do it."
"Okay, okay."
Kadras teasingly draws his twin swords. Sandra calmly charges her arm with electricity, maintaining a serious expression. Battle stance. Tension rises.
―――Oh no, I can't contain my excitement. My heart is racing. I can't stop feeling thrilled. I can't hold back my smile.
"Sorry, everyone."
I said.
"I'll take them both on."
Their reactions were varied.
"Huh?" Frain said, unable to understand.
"Huh?" Clay looked genuinely puzzled.
"Hehe," Ice chuckled for some reason.
"Are you kidding?" Toxy widened her eyes in disbelief.
And faster than all of that, I launched an attack on Kadras.
Rushing in with a quick attack, I unleash a Weight Increase hook. "Whoa, fast!" he exclaim, but Kadras effortlessly blocks my attack with his twin swords and easily deflects it.
"At your age, you're this good. Almost as skilled as Sandra-chan. It's a shame to kill you."
As I stumble from having my attack deflected, Kadras swings his sword down at me. I stare directly at the approaching blade, facing death head-on.
It was unbearable.
I spin with the momentum of my disrupted stance, using [Weight Increase] to boost my defense and intercept Kadras's sword as I try to reduce its weight.
"Whoa, seriously!"
It's time to close in. I kick away the intercepted sword and switch my stance to deliver a Weight Increase kick.
"!"
Kadras finally loses his composure, getting blown away by my attack with his twin swords. Sliding across the ground, he laughs.
"Haha! You're crazy! Alright, let's go all out for real!"
Before Kadras could say anything, I moved.
It's not aimed for Kadras. So I said it from the beginning.
'Both of you, come at me.'
"――――!"
I enhanced my agility with [Weight Reduce], kicked off the ceiling and walls of the room, and launched a sudden attack on Sandra. She seemed to have let her guard down, as she barely managed to respond to my fist in time.
However, even at the last moment, she made it in time.
"Spark"
She launched a counterattack with electricity towards me. I instinctively maximized [Weight Reduce]. An electrostatic repulsion lifted me gently. I descended until the discharge couldn't reach me, and then I landed.
"Whoa, seriously! Are you also going to be Sandra-chan opponent!? Ahahaha! This is bad! I might really like you guy!"
Kadras started laughing loudly.
"You're just copper, right!? You're lower ranked, right!? It's too exciting to go after the two higher-ranked opponents in a fight to the death, it's too interesting!"
Meanwhile, Sandra mutters to herself while staring at me.
"It should be almost impossible to dodge from that timing. Yet, I dodged it. Are you setting something up? Otherwise, it doesn't make sense. Even though you're flaunting copper, this isn't the power of copper."
However, she continued with a serious expression. Her cheeks slightly flushed.
"Besides, isn't that too cute though? That full-faced smile of yours is too dangerous. No way, no way, no way. And that quick attack. Even though it didn't reach me at that moment, you learned and grew on the spot. You're too cute."
"Sandra-chan, I was wrong. Sandra-chan, your taste is good. I like how messed up this guy is too."
"Do you understand? Then it's decided what we'll do."
"Yeah."
The two silver ones show each other.
""Don't die, kick his butts""
I laughed.
"Nice to meet you, senpai."
"It's not nice to meet you, SENPAIIIII...!"
Toxy said in a voice that seemed half on the verge of tears. Sorry.
