Chapter 26 Magic Training Begins
The day to start learning magic has finally arrived. Sara's tension was skyrocketing from morning, and she was eagerly waiting for Rebecca to appear at the breakfast table, fidgeting with excitement.
'If it's about isekai reincarnation, then it's gotta be magic!!'
Sara had been looking forward to the day she could properly learn magic ever since her past life memories returned. Although she hadn't told Robert or Rebecca, she had discovered she had water attribute magic, and she was secretly expecting to become a top-notch magician, a cheat-level magician, just like in the typical isekai genre.
At the Grandchester estate in the capital, Sara had been reading basic theory books and had managed to perform some minor water attribute magic. However, since Rebecca had warned her that "self-study of magic halfway through is dangerous," Sara had been holding back on practicing magic until today.
To be honest, she had been thinking, "I wanna read a bit more of the textbook," but with her schedule packed with classes and work, she couldn't even find time to read.
In this world, most people are born with some magical power. However, having magical power doesn't necessarily mean one can use magic. The ability to use magic means one has an attribute or directionality to their magical power.
Magic attributes are divided into 7 categories: "fire," "water," "wind," "earth," "wood," "light," and "darkness." In reality, there are more than 7 attributes, since magic that can't be classified into these 7 categories is defined as attributeless magic.
Even if one has magical power, they can use magic tools or magic circles, but if they can use magic, they can do so without these items. However, they can only use magic that matches their magical power level, and they can't use magic from attributes they haven't developed.
The nobility has a higher rate of magic manifestation compared to commoners. There's also a genetic factor involved, making it more likely for people from the same family line to have the same attribute magic. That's why the nobility actively seeks out people who can use magic. Most members of the royal familyx and high-ranking nobles are magicians.
In the Grandchester household, the Marquis and his 3 sons possess magic. Sara didn't know that Arthur was also a magician until Robert told her. The 3 brothers all had fire and wind attribute magic, but Arthur was the only one who could use high-level magic.
The wife of the young Marquis, Lady Marquis, came from a family famous for producing many magic knights. Although she herself didn't possess magic, she had a high magical power, which led her to marry into the Grandchester family.
However, her three cousins, who were also siblings, didn't develop magic even after turning 10 years old, which often led to marital disputes. According to Robert, "It's not just my sister-in-law's fault, but my brother too, so it's unfair to blame her."
Breakfast that morning was prepared in the conservatory. Since meals were also part of their studies, the dining location wasn't fixed. The location and menu for the next day's breakfast and lunch were announced to the servants, including Maria, the night before, but Sara only found out about it that morning.
When Rebecca entered the conservatory, Sara stood up and greeted her with a curtsy.
"You're a bit too hasty. Try to raise your face a little more slowly."
Rebecca immediately corrected Sara's etiquette.
"I apologize. I'm just too excited because I can finally start taking magic lessons today, and I can't calm down."
"Hehe, it's about time I saw you looking like a child, Ms. Sara."
"I want to ignore all the manners and hurry up with breakfast."
"I'd love to see Ms. Sara's cute face, but as a governess, I can't let that slide."
During the herbal tea break after breakfast, Rebecca asked Sara,
"By the way, Ms. Sara, when did you develop water attribute magic?"
"Pff..."
Sara almost spat out her herbal tea in surprise, but managed to hold it in.
"That reaction is unacceptable. You can't let your emotions get the better of you. Let's practice keeping a straight face, shall we?"
"Yes, Miss Rebecca. By the way, did you notice that magic is manifesting?"
"My friend told me before I met Ms. Sara. Of course, it's about the fairy's..."
Rebecca replied to Sara's question with a cool face.
"Can fairies see the magic attributes that manifest?"
"Some fairies, like my friend, who grant blessings to humans, have children who can see the magic attributes their opponents hold. Even if it's not manifesting, they can sense the latent attributes too."
"That's a valuable ability, isn't it?"
"Hehe, but this is a secret."
"Why is that?"
"Well, if I say it simply, it's because I'd be confined by the royal family or the church. I'm probably the only one in this country who has this ability."
"Ah... I kind of understand."
'That's right. If you have such a valuable ability, you can't just be left alone. You might even be treated like a saint.'
"Someone as amazing as you is my governess, isn't it? But was it okay to tell me?"
"As a rare ability holder, Ms. Sara isn't inferior either."
"I think I'm just not childish enough."
"Ah, you still don't get it."
Rebecca floated a mischievous smile and dropped a bombshell.
"Ms. Sara, you're the owner of all attributes. Right now, you can only manifest water attributes, but with training, you'll be able to use all attributes. There are only 2 people in this country who can use all attributes ―― His Majesty the King and His Highness the Crown Prince."
"Wwwwwwwww?"
"Hehe, that reaction is also a fail. Only I know about Ms. Sara's attributes for now."
"You didn't even tell Uncle Rob, did you?"
"Yes, I, who keep the secret of being able to sense magic attributes, can't just reveal Ms. Sara's secret to others. It's up to Ms. Sara herself to decide who to tell."
It seems that both Rebecca and Sara are incredibly overpowered. And by revealing her greatest secret, Sara has promised to keep hers as well.
"Actually, I took on Ms. Sara's governess because I found out Ms. Sara has all the attributes. A commoner like you, who doesn't know the world of royalty and nobility, having all the attributes is like throwing fresh meat in front of a hawk."
"That's probably true, isn't it?"
"Well, when I actually met you, I didn't have to worry at all, and it seemed fine."
"Well, what can you expect from a young girl?"
"Yeah, it's totally fine."
Then, Sara and Rebecca secluded themselves in the magic training grounds within the castle, just the 2 of them, and began their magic foundation training. Rebecca thought it would be difficult to suddenly manifest all the attributes, so she set her sights on mastering fire and wind attributes, which she was familiar with from her time in the Grandchester household.
"You know that in magic theory, it's written that 'magic is activated by understanding the essence of the attribute'?"
"Yes."
"Ms. Sara, you manifested water magic when you fell into the pool, right? That's because when you fell into the pool, you understood the essence of 'water' and recognized it as a power she could wield. It's the same for other attributes."
"The essence of the attribute?"
"But the way to grasp the essence of the attribute differs from person to person, so it's hard to teach others. There was a certain alchemist magician who, while researching the theory of 'why fire burns,' ended up manifesting fire magic."
'Is it because they grasped the essence of fire through the principle of combustion? In Sarasa's super convenient memory, combustion is a chemical reaction or nuclear reaction, right? Fuel, oxygen, heat source... ugh...'
Sarasa tried to recall her science experiments from her school days, but unlike water magic, it didn't manifest easily.
"It's difficult... Water is something I grasped intuitively, so it's not something that can be explained logically."
"Arthur said he was 'imagining a fireball flying far away.' But when I asked him how he was creating that flying fireball, he just said 'somehow' and didn't give me a straight answer."
"That's really rough, isn't it?"
"Yeah, so at the Academy, they have classes to improve your imagination power, and they teach you how to use more advanced magic with incantations."
"Incantations, you say?"
"Yeah, the teachers and seniors will chant and use magic right in front of you. The words they chant are called 'prayers,' and your body and mind remember the effects of the magic along with the prayers."
"Does Miss Rebecca also use incantations?"
"Yeah, even if you don't chant, you can still use magic, but chanting makes it more powerful and stable. But only Arthur and Rob taught me how to chant."
"Can I see it?"
"Yeah, sure. But don't expect too much, since I'm not good with fire and wind attributes."
Then, Rebecca faced the target, clapped her hands, and said, "I desire it. Oh, fire spirit Salamander, manifest flames from the void. Fire!"
With a somewhat embarrassing incantation, a small flame appeared near the target, creating a small burn mark before disappearing.
'This is no good. The incantation is so embarrassing, it's like I'm going to take damage just from hearing it. And the power is nothing compared to the grandeur of the prayer. It's so lame!'
"Uh... is it just that fire doesn't work?"
"Arthur could do it without chanting, but even with practice, People couldn't get fire and wind to work. He can use high-level healing magic without chanting, though."
"When the Magic Knights use magic, don't they usually chant?"
"Some of them don't chant, apparently. The commander and vice-commander of the Magic Knights are probably non-chanters."
"What if a monster or enemy suddenly appears and you're still chanting? Won't you die?"
"That's why the Magic Knights train to be able to fight with swords too. But basically, they focus on long-range attacks."
"I see."
'But doesn't it all come down to whether you can specifically imagine it or not, even if you don't need to chant?'
This time, Sara didn't think too much about it, and instead, she imagined creating a fireball with her fingertips and sending it flying far away. Then, she felt a slight movement of magical power within her body. This sensation was similar to when she activated water-attribute magic.
As she vividly imagined it, the speed of the magical power's movement increased. After a while, a small fireball appeared at her fingertips. It seemed that fire-attribute magic had been activated.
Once it was activated, it became easy to create fire just by imagining it from then on. It was as if a door that had been locked until then had been opened, and the magical power flowed smoothly. Before, even if she understood the mechanism of combustion, she couldn't ignite it, but now she could control the strength of the flames by using magical power as fuel.
Next, imagined using wind-attribute magic to blow this fireball away. After a while, wind-attribute magic was activated, and the fireball flew towards the target.
"Miss Rebecca! I did it!"
"You're too amazing, it's scary. You suddenly activated 2 attributes without chanting!"
Here, Sara unleashed her middle school-like imagination without any shame. Until now, she had been embarrassed to chant, but in her mind, she imagined various anime and game-like magic activations, and one after another, she activated powerful magic like "giant fireballs" and "whirlwind flames".
"Ms. Sara, hold back a bit. The training grounds are going to get destroyed!"
Rebecca called out to Sara with a surprised and exasperated expression. However, Sara, who was extremely high-tension, didn't listen at all.
Later, she successfully activated earth-attribute magic and tried to create a golem. However, for some reason, what was created was a pottery vessel.
"Hmm... something's off. Golem, golem..."
Then, a golem with a robotic shape like a masterless talos robot was created. However, for some reason, it was dancing with a strange, DJ-like movement.
'This is... the party trick that my club leader was good at! Ugh, I'm starting to want to say 'Rus!'
In the end, Sara played around with magic until she exhausted her magical power and collapsed, and she didn't wake up for about 2 days.
