Volume 10 Chapter 5 Dad's Secret
The Saints blessed by Goddess Alexandria, born into the Rest Priest Family, had the role of healing and saving Witch Sylphina.
That was Goddess Alexandria's wish.
To cleanse her sins.
To free Sylphina, who had been deeply hurt and turned into a Witch.
But──still, that hasn't happened.
I'm not the only Saint born into the Rest Priest Family. In the past, there must have been others with healing powers called Saints.
"...Why do you look like that, Lydia?"
Dad says.
He sits cutely on the table, staring at my face with his round eyes. So adorable.
Even though we're having a serious conversation, Dad is like a puppy, and it feels like he's trying really hard to talk, which is just cute.
I gently pat Dad's head. So fluffy.
"Lydia. I'm cute. But today, I have something important to talk about."
"Yes. I'm listening carefully."
I stop my hand from petting and nod seriously.
Eir-Eir and the others are snuggling up to me, and I almost get lost in the fluffy paradise, but I can't space out right now.
"...First, I want to apologize for hiding something from you all that I've known for a long time."
Dad looks down, seeming a bit down. A sad puppy. So cute.
"I'll tell you what I am. I'm called a holy beast... but actually, I'm an immortal. And I'm a child of Alexandria."
"Eh?"
Surprised, I look at Dad, who nods lightly.
Everyone seems a bit shocked for a moment, but I feel like I'm the most shaken and surprised.
Dad is a cute dog, married, and a child of Goddess Alexandria. Quite a lot to take in.
"Undead means, someone who is immortal. They keep the appearance of youth forever, never aging or falling ill. In other words, Dad has been living in this country since the distant past when Alexandria and the others existed."
When Sir Ciel asked, Dad simply replied, "That's right."
"Then why is Sylphina still trapped under the red moon? If you entrusted everything to Alexandria, it should have been over a long time ago. At least, I don't understand why you haven't acted until now, when everyone has forgotten the past."
At Mr. Lucian's remark, Dad lightly shook his head.
"I couldn't do it. My role was to watch over. To advise... I will tell you all the memories I know."
Dad continued in a low voice, sounding somewhat regretful.
"You might think that Alexandria and Theobart were in a romantic relationship, but that wasn't the case. The goddess Alexandria... as a young immortal, was spoiled and raised by other immortals. She was a woman who believed without a doubt that she was a beloved being."
"She's your mom, right...? You don't have to say it so harshly."
"It's the truth. The goddess who appeared from the heavens was worshipped by the people, and Theobart cherished her. They probably had no choice but to do so. Sylphina was neglected, and from her grief and sorrow, her magical power went out of control, transforming her unborn child into a jewel-like form... Sylphina is a Kirschtein. Originally, Kirschtein people were more skilled in magic than the Bernard people. Sylphina was especially gifted in magic, which is why such a thing happened."
The abandoned baby of Sylphina originally had a human form.
That child was truly the offspring of God Theobart. To have your child taken away and abandoned, how painful that must be. It hurt as if my heart was being gripped tightly.
"Theobart didn't really love Alexandria. He probably cared for her like a goddess. But since Alexandria didn't know anything about the world, he might have felt protective of her like a child. However, from Sylphina's perspective, it was just cheating. Sylphina's heart was broken, and she became a Witch."
"If Sylphina was important to him, he should have just said so. ...It's all the Bernard royal family's fault."
"Theobart's sin isn't Stefan's sin. Just because you were born into the same bloodline doesn't mean you have to feel responsible for the sins of people from the past."
Sir Stefan is feeling down after hearing his father's story.
Dad tried to comfort him, but finding out that God Theobart, whom he always believed to be a great divine ancestor, fathered a Witch is a huge shock for him.
"...But Sylphina became a Witch and was sealed away. That alone might have been okay. However, Sylphina was a princess of Kirschtein. When Kirschtein learned that the princess they married off to the nameless little kingdom of Bernard was harmed, they sided with Sylphina."
"...That's the same as what's recorded in Kirschtein."
Mr. Lucian murmurs.
If Sylphina is a princess, then Mr. Lucian must be related to her.
He remembers Mr. Lucian saying before that Kirschtein has different records from the Bernard Kingdom.
"A great war broke out, and many lives were lost. Kirschtein was defeated and lost most of its land to Bernard. It wasn't an invasion war, but... no matter how Theobart and Alexandria felt, the people of Bernard wanted the land. For years, Kirschtein was mocked as a nameless little kingdom, a barbarian land. So... believing that they were just because they had the goddess's protection, they didn't stop fighting until they controlled most of Kirschtein."
"...Well, the Kirschtein people had always believed that the Bernard people took their land. That Sylphina was the goddess. ...But not everything was as it seemed. Sylphina is a witch, but it's true that their land was taken. ...However, since they started the war, it can be said that it was unavoidable."
Mr. Lucian furrowed his brows thoughtfully. "Well, it doesn't really concern me much right now," he added.
