Volume 3 Chapter 12 The Villainous Guildmaster, Resting While His Subordinates Work
In the Royal Capital, the construction of the Guild Hall was moving along well.
On this day, I took a vacation.
I woke up in an inn in the Royal Capital.
Just then, my S-Rank Adventurer, Rozelia, walked in.
"Good morning, Guildmaster!"
"Morning, Rozelia."
We moved to the dining room to eat.
I discussed today's plans with Rozelia.
I gave her a few light orders.
"You have the day off today, Guildmaster."
"That's right."
"What are your plans?"
"Nothing special, just planning to rest. You make sure to take your vacation too. Tell the others too. Got it?"
"Understood... Hehe, you really are a thoughtful boss."
"Hmph. Don't get the wrong idea. I'm just being efficient with my subordinates."
"...You're really not honest, are you?"
---
I decided to leave the rest to Rozelia and walked through the town streets of the Royal Capital.
Even on a weekday, the Royal Capital was busy.
As I walked down the newly paved road, a church came into view.
"Ah, Guildmaster!"
"Trish, good morning."
A small girl cleaning the church entrance turned to face me.
When Trish noticed me, her face lit up with a bright smile.
She's one of the troublemakers I hired.
"What are you doing here?"
"Just a little errand."
"""Guildmaster!"""
The children playing in the yard all ran over to me at once.
"Guildmaster!" "Give us candy!" "Snacks!"
The kids clamored for sweets from me.
They were the orphans that Trish looked after.
"Hmph. Greedy little brats."
I pulled out a bag of treats from my belongings.
"What do you want today?"
"These are chocolate cookies!"
"""Yum yum! Cookies!"""
I hand the bag to the kids.
The kids cheerfully grab cookies from each other.
"Hey, you lot. Make sure you share properly. If you don't, I won't bring any more."
"""Got it!"""
The older kid distributes the snacks among the others.
"Guildmaster... thanks as always."
Trish whispers softly.
"You don't just introduce them to the Orphanage, you always bring treats for them too."
"It's not for you. Those brats will be valuable fighters in the future. It's an investment."
"But... you also donate a lot to the Orphanage, right?"
"That's not because of them. I've been giving money to this Orphanage for a while. Of course, it's an investment for the future."
Trish widens her eyes, then gives a faint smile.
"I feel like I'm starting to understand what kind of person you are."
Blushing, Trish looks up at me and says,
"You're not as villainous as the Guildmaster they talk about. It's really misleading."
"Nonsense. I am as they say."
"Yes, yes. Really... to keep working for others even on your day off, you truly are the Guildmaster."
---
After checking on the kids, I head to the Guild Association headquarters.
"Guildmaster!"
"Katrina, what a coincidence."
The head receptionist of my Guild, Gem of Heavenly Gift, approaches with a smile.
"Long time no see, how are you?"
"Fine. You seem unchanged too."
"Yes, I am!"
Seeing her smile, it's clear that the Guild is doing well.
Hmph.
Good for nothing.
She's doing a good job.
"Guildmaster, would you like to have tea later? Oh, if you're too busy, we can skip it."
"It's fine. I'm off today. I'll be waiting in the lounge."
"Understood!"
I leave Katrina and head towards the Guild Headquarters Chief.
"Yo! Act lively, won't ya?"
As I enter the room, the Chief of Headquarters calls out in a relaxed voice.
"Heard the news? The town's delinquents are turning over a new leaf, and they're getting good treatment while they work."
"Nonsense. I'm just using those brats cheaply."
"Still, those kids working look pretty lively, and the slum town's atmosphere has improved. Even the King seemed quite pleased."
"Not like I did it for the country."
"You're not very honest, you know."
I handle minor job meetings and pick up documents from headquarters.
"They could just send the mail directly to the Guild. No need to call me every time."
"Well, it's fine. By the way, about the next Headquarters Chief..."
"Hah..." I let out a sigh.
I've been persistently invited to take over his position for a while now.
It's become more obvious since I started living in the Royal Capital.
"I refuse."
"Huh?"
"I've got my hands full just running my Guild."
"But you seem to have some free time?"
"That's because the Guild members working under me are capable."
"No, no, it's because the person running it is capable, right? See, you'd be perfect for Headquarters Chief. Please, you're the only one for the job."
I glance at the wall clock.
"If there's nothing else, I'll take my leave."
"Wait, hold on!"
I leave the Headquarters Chief behind and step outside.
Katrina was waiting there with a smile.
"Sorry to keep you waiting."
"No, I just finished my business as well."
We move to the headquarters lounge and have some tea.
"Aren't you curious about how the Guild is doing?"
"Hmph. I can tell it's running smoothly without hearing about it. Is that mutt managing alright?"
Katrina's eyes go wide, but she smiles quietly.
"The Guildmaster really does have a way with words."
"My maid causing trouble for you, I apologize."
"No, no! It's not a bother at all. I'm really happy you can rely on me and Yui-Yui."
Leaving Yui and Katrina behind was definitely the right choice.
It's probably easier to rely on someone of the same gender.
"But... you really are impressive, Guildmaster. You give Frederica a challenge and even prepare a lifeline for her to get through it."
"Hmph. Don't get the wrong idea. I just didn't want my guild to be messed up. I have no intention of helping that girl."
"So, why didn't you bring Yui-Yui and me along?"
I slurp my coffee and look away.
"...Honestly, you're so kind and thoughtful, but you're also the least straightforward person ever."
